Hemingway in his early works depicted the lives of two types of people. One type consisted

of men and women deprived, by World War I, of faith in the moral values in which they had believed. The other type was men of simple character such as prizefighters and bullfighters. His earliest works include the collections of short stories Three 'Stories and Ten poems. The novel that established Hemingway's reputation, The Sun Also Rises, is the story of a group of morally irresponsible Americans and Britons living in France and Spain, members of the so-called lost generation of the post-World War I period. Hemingway's second important novel, A Farewell to Arms, is a story of a deeply moving love affair in wartime Italy between an American officer and a British nurse. The OM Man and Sea is his greatest novel that earned him the Nobel Prize for literature. The novel tells how man is faced with nature, and how man straggle against nature. Death in the Afternoon and Green Hills of Africa are Hemingway's two nonfiction works.

Hemingway's economical writing style. often seems simple and almost childlike, but his method is used to show complex effect. In his writing, Hemingway used simple nouns and verbs

to describe scenes wonderfully. By doing so he avoided describing his characters' feelings and thoughts directly. Instead, in providing the reader with the raw materials of an experience, Hemingway made the reading of a story as close to the actual experience as possible. Hemingway was also deeply concerned with authenticity (真实性) in writing. He believed that a writer could treat a subject honestly only if the writer had observed the subject closely. In addition, Hemingway believed that an author writing about a familiar subject is able to write economically. Hemingway's stylistic influence on American writers has been enormous. The success of his plain style. in expressing basic, yet deeply felt, emotions contributed to the decline of the elaborate (浮夸的) Victorian-era style. that is typical of American writing in the early 20th century. Many American writers have regarded Hemingway as an influence on their own work.

The novel that brought Hemingway greatest fame is______ .

A.The Sun Also Rises

B.The Old Man and Sea

C.Death in the Afternoon

D.Green Hills of Africa

Ernest Hemingway (1899—1961) : one of the best known and most influential American novelists and short-story writers. All his life Hemingway was fascinated by war—in World War I he worked for the Red Cross on the Italian front, in the Spanish Civil War and World War II he served as a war reporter. His experiences and observations provided him with materials and background for many of his best works, in which he concerned himself with mans courage in facing strong physical forces. "Grace under pressure" was Hemingways definition of courage. In his view, life is painful and complex. The only way to survive is to face what comes with honor, dignity, strength, knowledge and endurance. Hemingways overall message, as established in The Old Man and the Sea (1952) , his nearly flawless short novel which gained him the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in 1954, is that although life is a lonely, losing battle, it is a struggle that a man can dominate in such a way that his loss has dignity and is itself a victory.
