There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all mechanical (机械的) things. After serving his company heart and soul for over 25 years, he happily retired(退休). Several years later his company telephoned him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multi-million-dollar machines. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine fixed, but no help.
In desperation (绝望), they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer unwillingly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day he marked a small X in chalk on a particular part of the machine and proudly stated, "This is where your problem is.” Tile part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again.
The company received a bill for $ 20,001 from the engineer for his service. They told him to make a list of his charges.
The engineer answered briefly:
One chalk mark... $ 1
Knowing where to put it... $ 20,000.

B.after he worked in different companies for 25 years

entertaining people whose culture teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food. In one instance, a Chinese guest went hungry all the evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too shy to take food after only being asked to do so once. In another case, an American woman executive was being entertained in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English hostess was upset by the thought that she was not serving quickly enough.
As a general rule, a small gift from your home country is OK. A gift that is tied to the particular interest of the person is especially good. Gifts for children are also well received. Be careful that the "hometown" gift you are bringing to Singapore was not made in Hong Kong. Because many gifts carry symbolic meanings, it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural informant before selecting gifts. The giving of large gifts, or payments for special service, should only be carried out after talking with legal department in the home and host culture.

After serving in the US Navy (海军) for 20 years, being a Boeing flight instructor, and working with Alaska Airlines for more than three years, Webb signed a contract with Shenzhen Airlines last May to captain domestic routes in China. Though he is an experienced pilot, he feels the same nervousness as he did on his first flight.
Captain Webb said that the "Sept. 11" incident did not have a direct influence on his decision to move to China to work. "Safety is in fact tighter in the United States and I am not worried about a terrorist attack," he said. "The main reason I came to China was that my children would have a chance to see the world and experience international living."
Webb has not experienced any in-flight emergencies(紧急情况) during his term in China although he said the weather here was generally more changeable than in the United States. "The weather changes tend to be great from north to south. We may be flying in a snow storm in Harbin, and then later that same day we may be flying through a tropical rain shower approaching Shenzhen," Webb said.
While Webb had more flexibility (灵活性) to deal with the weather in the United States, he said air traffic control in China was more strict and allowed fewer deviations(偏离).
Speaking of planes often being late in China, Webb said that in America, being late was one of the few things that would get him in trouble. "In China, on the other hand, it seems there are many things that can get you in trouble with the boss, but being late is not one of them." Webb does everything in his power to keep his flights on schedule.
"They provide really excellent service during flights. Western flight attendants just serve passengers. But the Chinese attendants will also check on the crew to see if we need anything," Webb said.
Webb was engaged in a contract with Shenzhen Airlines as ______.
A.he was afraid of the influence of "Sept. 11"
B.he got a better pay there than in the US
C.he thought more for his children
D.he hoped to see the beautiful sights in China
Studying human beings biologically and physiologically leads us to very different conclusions about how alike or different we are from each other. Very different indeed, every human being on the planet, all 5.3 billion of us, has the same number of bones, of the same type, serving the same purposes; each of us has 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent, and these chromosomes, genes and the DNA and RNA of which they are integral parts, are in every single human being; every cell, every membrane, every tissue, and every organ is the same everywhere. We all have a heart, a circulatory system, 2 lungs, a liver, 2 kidneys, a brain and nervous system, a reproductive system, digestive and excretory systems, musculature, in short, we are the same biologically and our bodies perform. the same functions everywhere on the planet. And as we learned in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, if you prick us, any of us, "do we not bleed"? Of course we do, and
we bleed red blood no matter what the color of our skin, or the language we speak, the clothing we wear, the gods we worship, .or our geographical home. Man is of a Piece biologically; all equally effective organisms whether Amazon Indian, Australian aborigine, Parisian artist, Greek sailor, Chinese student, American astronaut, Russian soldier, or Palesfinian citizen.
Well then, you ask, how is that so many groups of people disparage other groups, persecute them, and claim superiority over them? Why is it that some groups of people still hunt animals, wear little or no clothing, have little or no technology, while others are very sophisticated in their technology, industry, transportation, communication, food gathering and storage? It is, of course, a matter of culture and the civilization that emerges and evolves from it. Though man is man everywhere, where he lives, when he lives there, with whom he lives there, all affect how he lives: that is, what he believes, what he wears, his customs, his gods, his rituals, his myths and literature, his language and his institutions. These are man-made artifacts that each group develops over time, living together, facing the same problems, needing and desiring the same things. They axe his culture, his identity.
The interactions of two powerful forces in all human life: nature (biology) and nurture (culture and civilization), shape us. Each culture has its own distinctive ways of seeing, feeling, thinking, speaking, believing, and just as no two humans are identical in all respects, so no two cultures are identical in all respects. But, wherever humans have lived and live today, there is culture with all of its elements embedded in a civilization that expresses that core of thought and feeling in its language, its institutions and other social organizations. All civilizations and the cultures that nourish them have hierarchies; social institutions, language, art of all kinds, religion or a system of spiritual beliefs of some kind, laws, customs, rituals (other than religious) and ceremonies.
A study of anthropology and make it very clear that humans have created divisions and exacerbated superficial external difference for their own ulterior purposes whether political, social, economic or religious. The truth is that we are much more alike in very basic ways than we are different. If you wear one type of garment and I wear another, we both wear some kind of garment. Our culture demands it. If you speak one language and I another, we both speak so that others will understand us; we must communicate with each other. Nothing is gained
