听力原文:W: Hi, Rob, you know that class you missed yesterday?

M: Yes, but I was seriously iii.

W: I'm sorry to hear that. You (:an have my notes.

M: Thanks. I appreciate that.

W: So how are you feeling?

M: Much better now that I began taking an antibiotic. Doctor Lee gave me one, and it really helps. You know what amazes me is that how the human beings managed to survive before antibiotics.

W: I agree. When my father was a young boy in the 1940's, he got blood poisoning and would have died. But his doctor had heard of this new drug called penicillin.

M: Wow, he was really lucky. And now we have lots of antibiotics that kill bacteria.

W: Well, penicillin kills bacteria, but not all antibiotics do. Some are just slowing the bacteria down until our normal immune defenses can finish the job.

M: Wow! How do you know all these?

W: My mother used to look up all our medicines. There are lots of books around. It's interesting. What antibiotics are you taking?

M: I don't remember. It's on the bottle. I think I'll take a new look at the label and drop by the library to see if they have reference books on medicines. See you in the lab tomorrow.

(23)

B.The effect of antibiotics.

C.The hobby of the woman's mother.

听力原文:M: Where do you get your ideas from, Mrs. Rowling?W: Where the idea for Harry Pot

听力原文:M: Where do you get your ideas from, Mrs. Rowling?

W: Where the idea for Harry Potter came from I really couldn't tell you. I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and it just popped into my head. I spent four hours thinking about what Hogwarts would be like. By the time I got off at King's Cross many of the characters in the books had already been invented.

M: Are any of the characters in the books based on real people?

W: Tricky question! Hermione Granger is a little bit like I was at her age. Ron is little bit like my oldest friend and Professor Shape is a lot like one of my old teachers.

M: How long have you been writing?

W: Nearly all my life. I had written two novels before I had the idea for Harry, though I'd never tried to get them published.

M: Did you expect the Harry books to be this successful?

W: Never. I didn't expect lots of people to like them, in fact, I never really thought much apart from getting them published.

M: Any clues about the next book?

W: I don't want to give anything away, but I can tell you that the books are getting darker... Harry potter's going to have quite a bit to deal with as he gets older. Sorry if they get too frightening!

M: Thanks for your help.

W: You're welcome.

(20)

A.Remarking on the film of Harry Potter.

B.Interviewing a successful woman writer.

C.Talking about their traveling experience on a train.

D.Asking the woman to do him a favor.

听力原文:W: That comes to $160.

M: One hundred and sixty dollars! I just can't believe how expensive textbooks are. And that's just for required texts. Why, if I have to buy all the books on my suggested reading lists, I'd have to take out a bank loan!

W: You could save some money if you buy used texts, you know.

M: I suppose, but it's hard for me to study from a text that's been marked up. Tell me, if I don't need some of these books, can I get a full refund?

W: Sure, if the professor changes his mind about a book or if you drop a course, just return it and we'll give you your money back—but only for the first three weeks of class. So don't write your name in the text or mark it up until you're sure you're going to keep it all semester.

M: And what about at the end of the semester? What's your buy-back policy?

W: As long as the books are in reasonably good condition, and they're going to be used in class the next semester, we'll give you 50% of their original value—even if you don't buy them at this store. Of course, if a professor changes texts or if a new edition comes out, we won't buy them back at all.

M: Fifty percent—that's all?

W: Well, I suppose that doesn't sound like much, but that's the store policy.

(20)

A.He is buying required textbooks.

B.lie is selling used books.

C.He is looking for all the suggested reading books.

D.He is borrowing friend's books.

听力原文:W: Why are you packing all these old bottles and newspapers together? Will you se
ll them?

M: Of course not. I'm just going over to the recycling center this afternoon. Sometimes volunteers come by these apartments and collect waste paper. Sometimes I take the old bottles and papers there myself.

W: How do people deal with these old things?

M: Manufacturers use waste paper for things like paper bags, towels, napkins and boxes.

W: My god! Am I wiping my mouth on the towels from the dustbin?

M: You can't say so. Used material must be treated carefully and scientifically before reusing. For instance, an old newspaper can be recycled by de-inking and pulping.

W: Does the recycled paper look the same as the paper made from virgin wood pulp?

M: Well, inevitably, owing to its dingy color, art books and high quality magazine paper wouldn't use recycled paper. However, I suppose it's suitable for things like greeting cards, calendars and writing paper. After all, who cares about the drab color if waste paper can help to preserve forests?

W: Yes, forests may be one of the most valuable natural resources in the world. Regretfully, some people in my country haven't realized the importance of the environment protection.

M: In America, a few years ago people were really enthusiastic about reusing waste paper. But with the decreasing demand recently, interest has been waning. I think the government should do something to make people resume their enthusiasm in recycled paper.

W: Absolutely right. In addition, manufacturers need to find new commercial uses for recycled paper. Perhaps we can read comic books made from it just like in Japan.

Questions:

11. Where is the man going this afternoon?

12.What product is NOT made from recycled paper, according to the conversation?

13.What major benefit can we get from recycling waste paper?

14.According to the man, what is the disadvantage of recycled paper?

15.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

(31)

A.To the recycling center.

B.On a bicycle trip.

C.To the newspaper stand.

D.To a shopping center.
