History as the artificial extension of the social memory (and I willingly concede that there are other appropriate ways of apprehending human experience) is an art of long standing, necessarily so since it springs instinctively from the impulse to enlarge the range of immediate experience; and however camouflaged by the disfiguring jargon of science, it is still in essence what it has always been. History in this sense is story, in aim always a true story; a story that employs all the devices of literary art (statement and generalization, narration and description, comparison and comment and analogy) to present the succession of events in the life of man, and from the succession of events thus presented to derive a satisfactory meaning. The history written by historians, like the history informally fashioned by Mr. Everyman, is thus a convenient blend of truth and fancy, of what we commonly distinguish as "fact" and "interpretation". In primitive times, when tradition is orally transmitted, bards and story-tellers frankly embroider or improvise the facts to heighten the dramatic import of the story. With the use of written records, history, gradually occurred; and with the increase and refinement of knowledge the historian recognized that his first duty is to be sure of his facts, let their meaning be what it may. Nevertheless, in every age history is taken to be a story of actual events from which a significant meaning may be derived; and in every age the illusion is that the present version is valid because the related facts are true, whereas former version are invalid because based upon inaccurate or inadequate facts.

Slavery has played a significant role in the history of the U. S. It existed in all the En
glish mainland colonies and most of the Founding Fathers also had slaves, as did eight of the first 12 presidents.

Dutch traders brought 20 Africans to Jamestown, Virginia, as early as 1619, however, throughout the 17 th century the number of Africans in the English mainland colonies grew very slowly. At that time, colonists used two other sources of unfree labor: Native American slaves and European indentured servants.

During those years, every colony had some Native American slaves, but their number was limited. Indian men avoided performing agricultural labor, because they viewed it as women' s work, and colonists complained that they were too "haughty". The more important was that the settlers found it more convenient to sell Native Americans captured in war to planters in the Caribbean than to turn them into slaves, because they often resisted and it was not hard for the slaves to escape. Later, the policy of killing Indians or driving them away from white settlements was proposed and it contradicted with their widespread employment as slaves.

The other form. of labor was the white indentured servitude. Most indentured servants consisted of poor Europeans. Desiring to escape tough conditions in Europe and take advantage of fabled opportunities in America, they traded three to seven years of their labor in exchange for the transatlantic passage. At first, it was mainly English who were the white indentured servitude but later increasingly Irish, Welsh, and German joined. They were essentially temporary slaves and most of them served as agricultural workers although some, especially in the North, were taught skilled trades. During the 17th century, they performed most of heavy labor in the Southern colonies and also consisted of the bulk of immigrants to those colonies.

At the end of the 17 th century, in order to meet the labor need, landowners in America turned to African slaves. During the late 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to the dominant position of England in terms of naval superiority, English traders (some of whom lived in English America) transported millions of Africans across the Atlantic. And the transatlantic slave trade produced one of the largest forced migrations in history, blacks (the great majority of whom were slaves) increasing from about 7 percent of the American population in 1680 to more than 40 percent by the middle of the 18th century.

Which of the following was true of the slavery in America?

A.The colonists sold African Americans to planters in the Caribbean.

B.Native American slaves performed agricultural labor.

C.During the 17th century, the white indentured servitude was the main labor in the Southern colonies.

D.It was at the end of the 17th century that African people began to be brought to America.

Weight Worries May Start Early for Slim Women

There is a range of reasons why thin women think they're too heavy, but the distorted body image may often have its roots in childhood, the results of a new study suggest.

Researchers found that among more than 2400 thin women they surveyed, nearly 10 percent thought they were too heavy. (46)

According to the study authors, led by Dr. Susanne Kruger Kjaer of the Danish Cancer Society Copenhagen, " society's ideal" female body is moving toward an underweight physique (体格). (47)

To investigate body image among thin women, the researchers gave questionnaires (调查表)to 2, 443 women ages 27 to 38 whose body mass index was at the low end of normal. (48)

Overall, almost 10 percent of the women thought they were too heavy. Those who reported certain "severe life events" in childhood or adolescence, such as having a parent become ill or having their educational hopes dashed (使破灭) , were more likely than others to have a distorted body image. (49)

In contrast, traumatic (使人不快的)events in adulthood, such as serious illness or significant marital problems, were not related to poor body image, the researchers report. (50)

A. The same was true for women who started having sex or drinking alcohol when they were younger than 15 years old.

B. Experiences in childhood, including having an ill parent, or starting to drink or have sex at a particularly young age, were among the risk factors for having a distorted body image.

C. "Our results indicate that the risk of being dissatisfied with (one's) own body weight may be established early in life. "Kjaer and her colleagues write.

D. Research suggests that many normal-weight women wish to weigh less.

E. If worries have altered your appetite or weight, it will help to talk to someone about it.

F. The women were asked about factors ranging from childhood experiences to current exercise habits.

● Read the article below about ICT industry in China.

● For each question 23--28, choose the correct answer.

● Mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet.

A brief history of the ICT industries reveals four main facets of development. First, in the telecom industry, China's rapid development has had a large impact on the world telecom industry. According to Ministry of Information Industry (MII) statistics for the first half of 2003, China has the world's largest telecom subscriber base, with nearly 500 million fixed-line and mobile subscribers. Overall telecom operator service revenue grew 14 percent to US$50 billion in 2002, with over 98 percent of this revenue accounted for by the four major state-owned operators.

In the cable TV industry, China has a rather unique history. Long considered part of the state propaganda apparatus, the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television (SARFT) has traditionally been responsible for both the production as well as the transmission of content. To de-politicize the business of video transmission. SARFT has been taking steps to separate the stations (i.e., content) from the net works in recent years.

In the computer/Internet industry. China has developed rapidly. Traditionally heavily focused on hardware, to the relative neglect of software, China's computer industry has been exposed to international competition for quite some time and has developed world-class domestic suppliers, in addition, China has over 50 million Internet users and Chinese is expected to become the most widely used language on the web within this decade.

Lastly, in the electronics manufacturing industry, China has in recent years emerged as a manufacturing base, as significant portions of the supply/assembly chain (most notably in computer and telecom equipment) have moved to the PRC. China's electronics sector is ranked first among all of China's industries in terms of foreign investment attracted, export volume, industrial value added, and contribution to GDP growth.

China's overall ICT industry can be viewed as growing very rapidly in many areas. Indeed, ICT constitutes a major area of China's overall growth. In the first quarter of 2003, China's overall industrial sector's industrial value-added grew by 17.2 percent year on year, compared to 10.9 percent growth a year earlier. Nearly one-third of that growth, or 5.8 points out of 17.2 percentage points of growth, came from two sectors: telecommunications and electronics.

China's rapid development in the telecom industry has played a/an ______ role on the w0orld telecom industry.

A.minor

B.important

C.secondary
