Relieving the Pain

"Exercise may be thebest treatment of chronic pain,"say doctors at a new clinic for dealingwith pain "People with chronic pain n, eed to stop lying around, go out more, and start exercising. "The instinctivereac- tion to acute pain is to stop moving and to try to protect the source ofpain_ But it seems that this is often not productive, especially in the case ofback pain Back pain, after headaches and tiredness, has become the third mostcommon reason for people to visit their doctors. Painful backs now account formillions of days off work.

Lumbar(腰部的)pains are partly theprice humans pay for taking their forelimbs off the ground, but they aremade worse by a sedentary(久坐不动的 ) lifestyle. Lack of exercise slowly decreases the flexibility andstrength of muscles, so that it is more difficult to take pressure off the siteof pain. Exer- cise is essential. It releases endorphins(内啡肽), the body's "feel-good"chemicals,which are natural painkillers. In fact. these are so important that researchersare now looking for drugs that can maintain a comfortable level of endorphinsin the body.

Most people who go to afamily doctor complaining of pain are prescribed pain=killing drugs rather thanexercise. Since finding the cause of backache is not so easy, doctors frequentlydo not know the precise cause of the discomfort, and as the pain continues, sufferers end up taking stronger doses or a series of different drugs."It's crazy, "says Dr. Brasseur,a therapist at the InternationalAssociation for the Study of Pain. "Some of them are taking different drugsprescribed by different doctors. I've just seen a patient who was taking two drugs which turned out to be the samething under different names.

A generation of new painclinics now operates on the basis that drugs are best avoided. Once pa- tients have undergone the initial physical andpsychological check up, their medication is cut down as much as possible. Taking patients off drugsalso prepares them for physical activity.

Insome pain-relief clinics, patients begin the day with muscle contraction andrelaxation exercises, followed by anhour on exercise bikes. Later in the day, they practice tai chi(太极) , self-defense, and deepthought. This compares with an average of two-and-a-half hours' physiotherapy(理疗)a week in a traditional hospital program. "The idea is to strengthen and toincrease long-lasting energy, flexibility, and confidence,"explains Bill Wiles, a consultant pain doctor in Liverpool. "Patients undergoing this therapy get back to work and resume healthyactive lifestyles much sooner than those subjected to more conservative treatment.”

听力原文:W: I haven't seen you down at the tennis court in weeks. Have you been on vacatio
n?

M: No, I have been around. It's just that I've got this pain in my elbow that's keeping me from playing tennis. And you know how much I love tennis!

W: I know. I used to see you practice every night. So what have you been doing to treat your elbow?

M: You name it pain-killers, heating pads, ice. But nothing seems to work.

W: Have you tried acupuncture?

M: Well, I've heard about it--they stick needles in all parts of your body, but I'm not too sure.

W: I don't blame you for being hesitant. I had a similar problem with my shoulder a while back. But I read an article about acupuncture for relieving pain, so I figured, why not? I'll try it.

M: And it worked?

W: It worked for me. The article was about an acupuncturist in California who's been successful in helping 90 percent of the people he's treated for the pain they get in their hands when they type too much.

M: That sounds promising. Now, isn't acupuncture a Chinese tradition?

W: That's right. The Chinese have been using acupuncture to treat pain for thousands of years. But it's really starting to catch on over here now. There are more than 9,000 licensed acupuncturists in the United States.

M: Wow! Is there an acupuncturist near campus?

W: There sure is. Are you busy now? I could walk you over there and you could make an appointment.

M: That'd be great. I want to get this problem taken care of as soon as possible so I can start playing tennis again.

Aspirin is the most popular drug in the world today. Many people take aspirin when they ha
ve a headache. It is effective in relieving other pains too. This article discusses the history and uses of aspirin.

Americans this year will swallow 15,000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. The most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.

For millions of people suffering from arthritis(关节炎), it is the only thing that works. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th century wonder drug. It is also the second largest suicide drag and is the leading cause of poisoning among children, it has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among uses.

Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates(水杨酸盐), the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century, there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 1915, aspirin tablets were available in the United States.

A small quantity of aspirin(two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation(炎症). It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Specifically, aspirin seems to slow down the formation of the acids involved in pain and the complex chemical reactions that cause fever. The chemistry of these acids is not fully understood, but the slowing effect of aspirin is well known.

Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.

A good title for this article would be______.

A.Why I Take Aspirin

B.The Side Effects of Aspirin

C.Aspirin: The Most Popular Medicine in the World

D.Aspirin, a Good Medicine

■ Section B Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by
some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.

Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

During the past seven or eight years, researchers have made some new and exciting discoveries about osteoarthritis (骨关节炎), a common and debilitating problem. No longer considered an inevitable consequence of the wear and tear associated with aging, osteoarthritis is now understood to be an active process that progressively damages cartilage (软骨) , the normally resilient (有弹性的) connective tissue cushioning every joint in the body. Osteoarthritis is caused by damaged cartilage that the body cannot properly repair. As we age, our cartilage becomes more prone to damage. When this damage occurs, cells within the cartilage may release mediators (substances that cause local inflammation), along with other cartilage-destroying chemicals. This process of damage upon more damage results in osteoarthritis.

Researchers have been able to identify what puts people at risk of developing osteoarthritis. Age is not necessarily an issue, although the disease is certainly more common in the elderly. Obesity is an overwhelmingly strong risk factor. For those already diagnosed, losing weight has been shown to slow the disease’s progression and substantially ease joint pain. Injury to a bone or joint may make that area more prone to arthritis in the future. For example, ankle fractures and knee surgery are linked to osteoarthritis, as are injuries due to some vigorous contact sports. Repetitive activities such as the movements involved in certain fields of work can contribute to osteoarthritis.

A number of recent studies have emphasized the importance of exercise in reducing pain and maintaining function in people with osteoarthritis. Weight reduction is another key component of treatment. Shoe inserts and knee braces can also relieve knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Although basic pain medications can help, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (布洛芬,一种抗炎、镇痛药) are more effective in relieving pain. However, these drugs carry the risk of kidney damage, high blood pressure, fluid retention and stomach bleeding. Glucosamine sulfate (氨基葡萄糖硫酸盐) is a component of normal joint cartilage. Recent studies have shown that 1,500 mg per day of this medication, available without a prescription, can decrease pain and improve function for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
