Research has shown that motivation is very important in learning a language; you need to b
e enthusiastic about it, and to be interested in it. Different people will have different motives-the desire for promotion, the hope of being able to study abroad, curiosity about a very different culture, and pure intellectual enjoyment are only some of the possible motives. But actually wanting to learn is the most important motive of all.

Courage is an essential attribute in learning a language. It takes a lot of courage to speak a foreign language either in front of your friends or to native speakers, bat don't be afraid of making mistakes--that is the way we learn. Nowadays there are many different forms of English, each with its own constructions and accent, and, so long as you can make yourself understood and can understand what is said to you, you have succeeded in communicating, which is the purpose of any language.

Curiosity is not only a possible motivation. It is also a great help in your learning. Remember that a language is not just a grammatical system, it is the outcome of a certain culture or different cultures. It is no good learning strings of words and lists of grammatical tales unless you know as much as possible about the background of the language, so that you can understand the ideas wich are being conveyed, the references which are being made, the inferences Which can be drawn from the information explicitly given. So learn as much as you can about the different cultures which influence English--watch television programmes, listen to tile radio, try to obtain newspapers and magazines which are written by native speakers, look at advertisements, and above all, read--not textbooks, but novels and poems and plays. They will show you how language is really used. The English language is not an abstract system; it is a living form. of expression which derives much of its meaning from the context in which it is used, and much of its effect from a whole network of extra-linguistic knowledge. If you live in a country where English is the native language, you acquire this knowledge naturally, just as in China you acquire your own cultural knowledge unconsciously. But because you are unlikely to be able to visit countries where English is spoken as the native language, you have to make a conscious effort to acquire this cultural awareness and knowledge.

With what topic is this passage primarily concerned?

A.Curiosity in Learning a Language.

B.Courage in Learning a Language.

C.Motivation in Learning a Language.

D.Qualities in Learning a Language.

Questions are based on the following passage.

Prior to the 20th century, many languages with small numbers of speakers survivedfor centuries. The increasingly interconnected modern world makes it much moredifficult for small language communities to live in relative isolation, a key factor inlanguage maintenance and preservation.

It remains to be seen whether the world can maintain its linguistic and culturaldiversity in the centuries ahead. Many powerful forces appear to work against it:population growth, which pushes migrant populations into the world"s last isolatedlocations; mass tourism; global telecommunications and mass media; and the spread ofgigantic global corporations. All of these forces appear to signify a future in which thelanguage of advertising, popular culture, and consumer products become similar. AlreadyEnglish and a few other major tongues have emerged as global languages of commerceand communication. For many of the world"s peoples, learning one of these languages isviewed as the key to education, economic opportunity, and a better way of life.

Only about 3,000 languages now in use are expected to survive the coming century.

Are most of the rest doomed in the century after that? Whether most of these languagessurvive will probably depend on how strongly cultural groups wish to keep their identityalive through a native language. To do so will require an emphasis on bilingualism(mastery of two languages). Bilingual speakers could use their own language in smallerspheres —— at home, among friends, in community settings —— and a global language atwork, in dealings with government, and in commercial spheres. In this way, many smalllanguages could sustain their cultural and linguistic integrity alongside global languages, rather than yield to the homogenising (同化的) forces of globalisation.

Ironically, the trend of technological innovation that has threatened minoritylanguages could also help save them. For example, some experts predict that computersoftware translation tools will one day permit minority language speakers to browse theInternet using their native tongues. Linguists are currently using computer-aided learningtools to teach a variety of threatened languages.

According to the passage, minority languages can be best preserved ___________. 查看材料

A.in the interconnected modern world

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated to have been about fi
ve million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language, as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.

It is virtually impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate working knowledge of English in addition to their own language. The purposes for which English is learned and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to define and still more difficult to assess what constitutes an adequate working knowledge for each situation.

The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present-day importance as a world language. Besides serving the infinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of the most important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the dissemination(传播)of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for access to the scientific and technological development in the West.

There are about 260 million people who can speak ______.

A.English in its regional variety

B.English in its standard variety

C.English as a second language

D.English as a working language
