Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and even of
books--especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy ' proper' book, too, printed on good paper and bound between hard cowers. There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshop in the world to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’time. Some of these shops sell, of will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books , in books on philosophy, politics of any other of a very large number of subjects which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet.

Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Chafing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand volumes, the collector must travel off the beat- en track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so grandiose (宏大的)as bookshops. Instead, the book sellers come along each morning and tip out their sacks of books on to small barrows (活动推车)which line the roadside. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for few pence an old volume that may be worth many pounds.

The text tells us Londoners like ________.

A.to buy books of all kinds

B.to do reading of all kinds

C.to buy proper books

D.to read newspapers and magazines

听力原文: People enjoy talking about trips, but what are the reasons they leave home? (33)One reason is for education. People travel because they want to broaden their horizons to learn about other people and other places. They are curious about other cultures. When people are tourists, they get a quick look at different ways of living. Even a short look at another kind of lifestyle. is an important lesson.

On a trip, a person can learn directly--by visiting museums and historic spots. (34)What does a tourist learn who sees the art museums, visits the historical palaces and other scenic spots in Paris, and shops along the River Seine? He gets a vivid picture--a real-life one--of the French people. He learns about their attitudes, how they feel about business, beauty, and history.

What about the tourist who goes to Hong Kong? Does he get the same information that he could get from a book? He might read that Hong Kong is crowded, that there is less than 200 square meters of space for each person, but seeing and feeling the lack of space will (35)impress him much more. He might read that there are nearly 200 vehicles for every kilometer of roadway, but the sight of so many vehicles parked along the roadside will be (35)a much more vivid lesson. The tourist to Hong Kong will never forget the contrasts--the straight vertical lines of the tall modern buildings and the moving lines of boats that people live in.

(34)

A.To look for a different lifestyle.

B.To enjoy themselves.

C.For adventure.

D.For education.

听力原文: Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe to as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspaper?

Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings—battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed—took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by words of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in faraway countries on the stone day they happen.

Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money for the news of their products goes into every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.

Newspapers often have information on gardening, cookery and fashion, as well as a small but very popular section on jokes and cartoons.

(30)

A.To make newspapers sell at low prices.

B.To make newspapers run profitably.

C.To make their products known to more people.

D.To sell their products at low prices.
