听力原文: Japan's divorce rate rose to a record high last year, reflecting an increasing number of middle-aged and older couples who are parting ways.

The number of divorces rose for a 12th straight year in 2002, according to recently re leased government statistics that provided the latest confirmation that the stigma long associated with breaking up is fading in this country.

According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, a record 289,836 couples divorced last year, up 1.4 percent from the previous high of 285,911 in 2001.

Behind the rise is an increasing number of couples who are parting ways after being married for 20 years or more: They accounted for 15.7 percent in 1975. The corresponding figure for newlyweds—married five years or less—fell to 34.4 percent from 49 percent.

Divorce is no longer seen as a social taboo in harmony-conscious Japan. But that is slowly becoming a thing of the past, a trend some attribute to a weakening of group-oriented values.

Which of the following groups is defined as "newlyweds"?

A.Couples who are married for less than two years.

B.Couples who are married for less than five years.

C.Couples who are married for more than five years.

D.Couples who are married for more than twenty years.

听力原文: Sharon Keating was worried about her kids when she got a divorce. Her daughter says, "I was feeling ... like down and sad and even though I didn't really show it."

Judith Wallerstein says problems from divorce can last for many years. They can show up when the kids are adults. As adults, the kids have trouble.

Wallerstein studied 93 children over a generation. The results can only be found in her book.

She says children of divorce are more likely to have problems with drugs. They are far more likely to seek therapy. About 40-percent of them do not marry. Their marriages fail at nearly twice the usual rate. It is hard for them to trust. They are afraid of failing.

Critics say Wallerstein had too few children in her study. Other things may be the cause of the kid's problems. The study does not compare kids from divorced families with kids from "healthy" families.

Wallerstein's families divorced a generation ago. Times have changed. People feel different about divorce. Today programs like Kid's Turn try to lessen some of the effects of divorce with family counseling. Talking about their feelings helps the kids get through it.

Since they know more about the problems, maybe the kids will be able to handle it.

(33)

A.Children of divorce are always happy.

B.Children of divorce sometimes feel sad but don't really show it.

C.Children of divorce are no! affected.

D.Children of divorce are always very angry.

听力原文: W: Mr. Glieberman, do you see any change in the high rate of broken marriages?

M: The divorce rate is beginning to level off and probably will begin to drop in the next year or two, though not significantly. The tight economy has made it more difficult for troubled couples to handle all the costs associated with setting up separate households. Also, I believe there's a comeback of thought—after the turbulent '60s and '70s—that the family does have value. In the midst of change and family disintegration, people seem to have a greater desire now to create stability in their lives.

W: What is the divorce rate now?

M: About 1 in 3 marriages ends in divorce, a ratio far higher than it was 20 years ago when the philosophy was "We'll tough it out no matter what. Society demands that, for appearances' sake, we stay together."

Divorce no longer carries much disgrace. There's no way, for example, that Ronald Reagan, a divorced man, could have been elected President in 1960. And there are countless other divorced politicians who years ago would have been voted out of office if they had even considered a divorce, let alone gotten one.

The same was true in the corporate structure, where divorced people rarely moved up the executive ladder. Now corporations welcome a divorced man, because they can shift him around the country without worrying about relocating his family or making certain that they are happy.

Which word best describes the lawyers' prediction of the change in divorce rate?

A.Fall

B.Rise

C.V-shape

D.Zigzag

听力原文: In recent years, there have been an unusually large number of divorces in the United States. In the past, when two people manned each other, they intended to stay together for life, while today many people marry believing that they can always get a divorce if the marriage does not work out.

In the past, the large majority of Americans frowned at the idea of divorce. Furthermore, many people believed that getting a divorce was a luxury that only the rich could afford. Indeed, getting a divorce was very expensive. However, since so many people have begun to take a more casual view of marriage, it is interesting to note that the costs of getting a divorce are lower. In fact, wherever you go in the United States today, it is no unusual to see newspaper ads that pro vide information on how and where to get a cheap divorce.

Hollywood has always been known as the divorce capital of the world. The divorce rate among the movie stars is so high that it is difficult to know who is married to whom. Today, many movie stars change husbands and wives as though they were changing clothes. Until marriage again becomes a serious and important part of people's lives, we will probably continue to see a high rate of divorce.

(23)

A.They thought it quite acceptable.

B.They believed it to be a luxury.

C.They took it to be a trend.

D.They considered it avoidable.

听力原文: A "typical" British family used to consist of mother, father and two children, but in recent years there have been many changes in family life. Some of these have been caused by new laws and others are the result of changes in society. For example, since the law made it easier to get a divorce, the number of divorces has increased. In fact one marriage in every three now ends in divorce. This means that there are a lot of one-parent families. Society is now more tolerant than it used to be of unmarried people, un married couples and single parents.

Another change has been caused by the fact that people arc living longer nowadays, and many old people live alone following the death of their partners. As a result of these changes in the pattern of people's lives, there are many families that consist of only one person or one person and children. You might think that marriage and the families are not so popular as they once were. However, the majority of divorced people marry again, and they sometimes take responsibility for a second family.

(33)

A.High rate of divorce in Britain.

B.Generation gap in Britain.

C.Changes in family life in Britain.

D.One-parent families in Britain.

听力原文: Japanese Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka is reported to have voiced concerns over Washington’s plan for a missile defense system.

Japanese news reports Friday said Ms. Tanaka told Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini in Beijing last Friday that she was concerned about U.S. plans to deploy missile defenses.

The reports said she also suggested that Japan and Europe must cooperate in urging Washington to show caution about the plan.

If the remarks are confirmed, it would put Ms. Tanaka at odds with Tokyo’s official position that it "under-stands" Washington’s plan to develop the National Missile Defense project.

Washington says the system is needed to protect the United States and its allies from attack by so-called rogue nations.

To whom did Ms. Tonaka tell about her idea?

A.Chinese Foreign Minister.

B.U.S. State Secretary.

C.Italy Foreign Minister.

D.Japanese Foreign Minister.
