Because headaches are a part of almost all of our lives, people with chronic headaches som
etimes don't realize that they may need to see a doctor. They tend to believe, incorrectly, that their headaches are like everyone else's and they will only be "bothering(打扰,麻烦)" the doctor.

"When should somebody seek medical help for headaches? neurologist Seymour Diamond asks rhetorically (提出问题进行探讨). Generally, whenever headaches are associated with neurological signs, such as dizziness(头昏,头晕), weakness in a limb or limbs, vision impairment of any sort—including seeing flashing lights—they warrant(应受) immediate attention. Additionally, Diamond says that you should seek medical attention:

If you suffer from almost daily headaches;

If the headache is a type you've never had before, or there has been a change in the character(特征) of the headache;

If you' re losing time from work or activities, or otherwise being prevented from functioning.

Even if your headaches are less dramatic than those described here, if they are a re- al problem to you, you should seek help. It may be that your doctor will be unable to find a physical cause for your discomfort, but that may point you in other directions to find relief. Some headaches, particularly those caused by tension, have a major psycho- logical component that might be relieved through counseling (走向,指导).

People with chronic headaches never realize that they need to see a doctor.

B. Wrong

Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we
all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.

A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like highvoltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for wouldbe heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their farm find life more abundant?

Heroes are catalysts(催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. , we might still have segregated (隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the commit tee meetings endless.

Although heroes may come from different cultures, they ______.

A.generally process certain inspiring characteristics

B.probably share some weaknesses of ordinary people

C.are often influenced by previous generations

D.all unknowingly attract a large number of fans

听力原文: Some children are natural born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisi
ons, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student, "operates under the theory of whats mine is mine and whats yours is mine," says his mother. "The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers. Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones." "Examine the extended family, and youll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. Its an inheritable trait," says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other. Whether its inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands at the young isnt healthy for children or the family. Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behaviour, says family psychologist John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation, "have secret feelings of weakness" and "a desire to feel safe". Its the parents role to provide that protection. When a "boss child" doesnt learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly-willful and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways. "I see more and more parents giving up their power," says Barkley, who has studied bossy behaviour for more than 30 years. "They bend too far because they dont want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious." Questions 23 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. 23. What should parents of bossy children do with regard to the childrens behaviour? 24. What do we learn about bossy children from the passage? 25. What is the passage mainly about?23.

A.They may probably become lonely.

B.They may probably become skilful.

C.They may probably become relaxed.

D.They may probably become hesitant.

Tranquilizers calm a person by acting on the nervous system. They belong to a group of
drugs called anti-anxiety and hypnotic drugs. Such drugs formerly were referred to as depressants.

2. There are two types of tranquilizers-anti-psychotic drugs and anti-anxiety drugs. Anti-psychotic drugs are used to treat patients with severe mental illness psychose. Antianxiety drugs are used to treat various emotional problems, particularly anxiety.

3. Physicians prescribe anti-psychotic drugs to treat a mental illness that is characterized by illogical, unpredictable thinking. The drugs reduce the confusion and excitement experienced by the patient. Anti-anxiety drugs relax the muscles and reduce tension. They are prescribed mainly for the treatment of anxiety. Physicians also use anti-anxiety drugs to calm children who must undergo surgery.

4 .Tranquilizers calm a person without causing much drowsiness if taken in a small enough dose. Larger doses may make the user sleepy as well as calmer. However, even the use of mild tranquilizers over a long period of time may make the user dependent on these drugs. Besides, some tranquilizers have undesirable side effects. They may cause muscle weakness and general fatigue. In addition, tranquilizers may cause drowsiness, especially if a person drinks alcoholic beverages before or after taking the drugs. A per- son should not drive a motor vehicle for several hours after taking a tranquilizer.

5. Therefore, physicians usually prescribe a small doze of tranquilizers at a time. Patients who suffer from insomnia have to visit physicians from time to time for the medicine. Drugstores do not sell tranquilizers to people without the physician's prescription. You must have heard of stories about individuals taking an excessive dose of tranquilizers to commit suicide. Tranquilizers must be taken in accordance with the physician' s instructions.

A. The physician's instructions must be followed when tranquilizers are administered

B. Physicians prescribe anti-psychotic drugs to treat patients who suffer illness of the mind

C. Taking excessive tranquilizers is a sure way of commit- ting suicide

D. Anti-psychotic drugs are sued to treat severe mental illnesses, antianxiety drugs various emotional problems.

A diverse group formed each year to compete in a sport is an excellent example of team bui
lding. Groups develop into "teams" when their common purpose is understood by all of the members. Within effective teams each member plays an assigned role using his or her talent to the best advantage. When members integrate their skills to accentuate strengths and minimize weakness team objectives are usually achieved. When on the other hand groups play as individuals, they usually fail. Most wins or loses are the result of "teamwork". In sports, feedback is often immediate. If teamwork is lacking, good managers can identify where the problems are, and initiate corrective action in order to change things until the desired results are achieved.

Like other athletic counterparts, group organized to perform. business, community and governmental functions can achieve far more when they work as "teams". Unfortunately, many leaders fail to recognize and apply the same principles, as they would while coaching a sport. In a work organization they do not understand how to transform. their group into a productive team. One reason may be that feedback in the form. of results is not as quick or dramatic as in athletics. Problems can go unnoticed and corrective action if taken can be slow in coming.

Effective teamwork knows no level. It is just as important among top executives, as it is among middle managers, first line supervisors or the rank and file. The absence of teamwork at any level will limit organization effectiveness and can eventually kill an organization.

It can be inferred(推断出)that the main idea of this passage is ______.

A.cooperation in sports

B.productive team

C.advantages of being in a team

D.effective teamwork

You must have been troubled by when to say "I love you" because it is one of the greatest
puzzles in our life.

What if you say it first and your partner doesn' t love you back? Or if they do say it but you don't feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be nerve-racking(紧张) and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn't it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand first?

"A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sidney Crown. "But love is seldom equal." All relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. "That feeling of 'I' ve always loved you more' may be subverted(颠覆,破坏) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大声争吵)." In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. "The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings," says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. "The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says 'I love you' first may also be the one who says 'I' m bored with you' first. " Hall believes that much depends on how "I love you" is said and the motivation of the person saying it. "Is it said when they' re drunk? Is it said before their partner flies off on holiday, and what it really means is 'Please don't be unfaithful to me' ? By saying 'I love you', they really saying 'Do you love me?' If so, wouldn' t it just be more honest to say that?" Collins agrees that intention is everything. "It' s not what is said, but how it' s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.

What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The importance of "I love you".

B.The meaning of "I love you".

C.The time of saying "I love you".

D.The place of saying "I love you".

?Read the article below about small high-tech firms.

?For each question 31—40, write one word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

SMALL HIGH-TECH FIRMS

The problems of small high-tech firms have attracted a lot of attention recently. Research shows that many of these firms are built BY talented, creative scientists. Their owners have no trouble coming (31) with innovative products but they often can't build on their early success.

One reason (32) this is that they don't have much management expertise. Therefore, they are unable (33) develop the strategies which are necessary for their company's growth. They are (34) a rush to develop products, and don’t think enough (35) how to market them. When they do try to sell their products, they spend too much time trying to gain the trust of potential customers. Another mistake they make is to underprice their products so that they have no finance (36) future development.

Once the firms begin to grow, their owners underestimate the future costs of developing and marketing new products. Lack (37) financial planning is a major weakness of such companies. It is difficult for the high-tech firm to attract the right personnel because it cannot offer the same job security (38) a large organization. The high tech firm can get round some of these problems by developing a specialist image. It can aim (39) a particular segment of the market. Customers then start seeking (40) the firm, se its marketing costs are reduced. The only drawback is that it may take some time before customers accept the firm's new technology.

Enthusiasm, bright ideas, venture capital and technology are not enough to ensure success. Basic management skills—especially financial and marketing ones—are also vital.
