We are all conditioned by the way we are brought up. Our values are determined by our pare

nts, and in a larger sense, by the culture in which we live. The Chinese, for example, are not accustomed to the drinking of milk, and may actually become sick if they are compelled to drink a glassful of the beverage. Americans, on the other hand, thrive on milk, although they have many taboos of their own.

Some years ago I gave a dinner party during which I served a delicious hors d' oeuvre filled with a meat that tasted somewhat like chicken. My guests wondered what the meat was, but 1 refused to tell them until they had eaten their fill. I then explained that they had just dined on the flesh of freshly killed rattlesnake. The reaction was nausea--and in some cases violent vomiting. If I had served rattlesnake to a Chinese, he would doubtless had requested a second helping, for in China the dish is considered a delicacy.

Another interesting case is the young man I met recently in New York City. An American by birth, he had been removed from his native state of Oregon at the age of six months when his parents went to Japan as missionaries. Orphaned before his first birthday, he was reared by a Japanese family in a remote village. The young man was unmistakably American in appearance, with blond hair and blue eyes. But he had a Japanese style. of walking, Japanese facial expressions, and he thought like a Japanese. Though he had learned to speak English fluently, he felt uncomfortable and nut of place in an American city. He soon returned to Japan.

The best title of this passage is ______.

A.Cultural Conditioning

B.Our Parents' Values

C.American Customs

D.Taboos among the Chinese

Is Your Child's Stomach Pain All in His Head?

We all know there are times that kids seem to complain (51) a stomachache to get out of chores(零星活儿)or going to school. Don't be so sure that the pain they (52) is all in their minds. We're learning more now about a condition (53) " functional abdominal pain" that is experienced by millions of kids every day.

Like many teenagers, Kyle Brust makes it a point to do his homework as (54) as he gets home. Unlike most, Kyle often did this with a terrible stomachache. In fact, the (55) often started while he was at school, but getting help there was getting harder.

"Some of my teachers wouldn't let me go, because I'd asked so many times before and they thought I was trying to get out of (56) ," says Kyle.

Kyle's mom Marilyn says she couldn't blame the (57) . After all, she'd taken him to the doctor several times herself, and even they couldn't find anything (58) .

"You know, you're running the tests and nothing's coming up. So, is it in his head, is he just an extremely stressful child? It's just frustrating (59) we're not finding any answers," says Marilyn.

It turns out Kyle was suffering from a condition known (60) functional abdominal pain, that affects as many as one out of every ten kids in this country. Even (61) the cause of the pain may not be obvious, there are real consequences.

"It really does hurt, and these kids really do suffer," says Dr, Campo, MD at Nationwide Children's Hospital. To help (62) , Campo is looking into a new approach. He's conducting clinical trials of an antidepressant(抗抑郁药)that changes the way the body handles a chemical called serotonin(血清素). In a preliminary study, Dr. Campo found that in about eight out of ten (63) , the drug normally used to treat emotional pain worked to ease the pain in the (64) .

"We think about it as being important in anxiety and depression and that's all quite true, but what's really interesting is that 95% of our body's serotonin is in our gut," says Campo.

Campo believes these kids have extremely sensitive intestines(肠), and controlling the effects of serotonin may (65) ease the pain. It seemed to work for Kyle, who is now completely pain free for the first time in years.

The word conservation has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave
what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and "inexhaustible". Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.

Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a

new idea; timber was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today.

For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers. Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyone's daily life. To know about the water table in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to yield their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big, mature trees, because living space for most of man's fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.

According to the author, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that______.

A.they had no idea about scientific forestry

B.they were not aware of the significance of nature study

C.they had little or no sense of environmental protection

D.they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials

A subject which seems to have been insufficiently studied by doctors and psychologist is t
he influence of geography and climate on the psychological and physical health of humankind. There seems no doubt that the general character of landscape, the relative length of day and night, and climate must all play a part in determining what kind of people we are.

It is true that a few studies have been made. Where all the inhabitants of a particular area enjoy exceptionally good or bad health, scientists have identified contributory factors such as the presence or absence of substances like iodine, fluoride, calcium, or iron in the water supply, or perhaps types of land that provide breeding places for pests like mosquitoes or rats.

Moreover, we can all generalize about types of people we have met. Those living in countries with long dark winters are apt to be less talkative and less lively than inhabitants of countries where the climate is more equable(稳定的). And where olives and oranges grow, the inhabitants are cheerful, talkative, and casual.

But these commonplace generalizations are inadequate—the influence of climate and geography should be studied in depth. Do all mountain dwellers live to a ripe old age? Does the drinking of wine, rather than beer, result in a sunny and open character? Is the strength and height of a Kenyan tribe due to their habitual drinking of the cow blood?

We are not yet sure of the answers to such questions, but let us hope that something beneficial to humankind may eventually result from such studies.

The author's purpose of writing this passage is to ______.

A.alert readers to the scarcity of natural resources

B.call for more research on the influence of geographical environment

C.introduce different elements in character cultivation

D.draw more attention to the health condition of mankind

From science, modestly pursued, with a due consciousness of the extreme finitude of our in
tellectual powers, there can arise only nobler and wider notions of the purpose of Creation. Our philosophy will be an affirmative one, not the false and negative dogmas of Auguste Comte, which have usurped the name, and misrepresented the tendencies of a true positive philosophy. True science will not deny the existence of things because they cannot be weighed and measured. It will rather lead us to believe that the wonders and subtleties of possible existence surpass all that our mental powers allow us clearly to perceive. The study of logical and mathematical forms has convinced me that even space itself is not a requisite condition of conceivable existence. Everything, we are told by materialists, must be here or there, nearer or further, before or after. I deny this—and point to logical relations as my proof.

听力原文:W: That comes to $160.

M: One hundred and sixty dollars! I just can't believe how expensive textbooks are. And that's just for required texts. Why, if I have to buy all the books on my suggested reading lists, I'd have to take out a bank loan!

W: You could save some money if you buy used texts, you know.

M: I suppose, but it's hard for me to study from a text that's been marked up. Tell me, if I don't need some of these books, can I get a full refund?

W: Sure, if the professor changes his mind about a book or if you drop a course, just return it and we'll give you your money back—but only for the first three weeks of class. So don't write your name in the text or mark it up until you're sure you're going to keep it all semester.

M: And what about at the end of the semester? What's your buy-back policy?

W: As long as the books are in reasonably good condition, and they're going to be used in class the next semester, we'll give you 50% of their original value—even if you don't buy them at this store. Of course, if a professor changes texts or if a new edition comes out, we won't buy them back at all.

M: Fifty percent—that's all?

W: Well, I suppose that doesn't sound like much, but that's the store policy.
