听力原文: In Greece only rich people will rest in peace forever when they die. Most of the population, however, will be undisturbed for only three years. Then they will be dug up, washed, compressed into a small tin box and placed in a bone room. If the body has only partially decayed, it is reburied in a smaller cheaper grave, but not for long the body will be dug up again some time later when it has fully decayed. Buying a piece of land for a grave is the only way to avoid this process. The cost of the grave is so great that most people choose to rent a grave for three years and even after being dug up, lasting peace is still not guaranteed. If no one pays for renting space in a bone room, the skeleton is removed and stored in a building in a poor part of the town. Lack of space in Athens is the main reason why the dead are dug up after the three years. The city is so overcrowded that, sometimes, dead bodies are kept in hospitals for over a week until a grave is found. Athens' city council wants to introduce cremation ,that is, burning dead bodies as a means of dealing with the problem. But the Greek Church resists this practice. They believe the only place where people burn is hell. So burning dead bodies is against the Greek concept of life after death. To save space, the church suggested burying the bodies standing up instead of lying down. Some people purposed building multi-storey underground graveyards.

(33)

听力原文: The Mediterranean is a word both easy to pronounce and easy to spell—if you only know how. It is a word of five syllables: Mediterranean, meaning mid-earth. The Chinese translation is a happy one, as it means exactly the same thing.

Europe owes its early growth to the Mediterranean Sea. On its shores were the seats of early civilization: Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Mediterranean fed the people in these lands and provided a high way for trade and diplomacy. Together, they formed a Mediterranean civilization.

In 1869 the Suez Canal was cut after 10 years of arduous work. Linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, the Canal shortened the passage from Europe to Asia by some 10,000 kilometers.

The Canal is 171 km long and 65 km wide. An ocean liner takes some 10 hours to go through. It goes slowly, but safely. The Canal is now completely Egyptian property. Foreign ships pay for their passage, making the Canal a good earner of hard currency.

(33)

A.Pleasing.

B.Careful.

C.Wonderful.

D.Suitable.

听力原文: In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor's degree.

Generally, however, modem examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act as machines.

One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer.

(30)

A.They read poetry aloud.

B.They delivered a speech.

C.They took objective tests.

D.They discussed questions with expert in a particular field.

听力原文: Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. The best build
ings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art.

The revival of classical culture brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well. In architecture, the principles and styles of ancient Greece and Rome were brought back to life and reinterpreted. They remained dominant until the 20th century.

Many kinds of stone are used as building materials. Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are not burnable and can be expected to endure. Stone architecture was often blended with stone sculpture. The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more adaptable to industrial use.

The complexity of modern life calls for a variety of buildings. More people live in mass housing and go to work in large office buildings; they spend their income in large shopping centres, send their children to many different kinds of schools, and when they are sick they go to specialized hospitals and clinics. All these different types of buildings accumulated experiences needed by their designers.

By the middle of the 20th century, modern architecture, which was influenced by new technology and mass production, was dealing with increasingly complex social needs. Important characteristics of modern architectural works are expanses of glass and the use of reinforced concrete.

(30)

A.A government document.

B.A literary work.

C.A social art.

D.An individual's creation.

听力原文:Woman: The earliest records of this trade go back to the Ancient Greek period with various deals around the Mediterranean area. Unlike the trade in more decorative or luxury goods, however, few written records remain. So, we mostly rely on archaeological evidence which does show, for example, that designs for swords spread from Greece to the rest of Europe. And using the type of research more usually associated with the spread of artistic trends, we can now show how the equipment necessary to do battle was being exported.

You hear the beginning of a lecture about ancient history. What is the lecture going to be about?

A.trade in arms and weapons

B.trade in luxury household goods

C.trade in works of art
