听力原文: American restaurant customs are in some ways different from those in other countries. It may be appropriate to get a waiter or waitress' attention by calling, whistling or snapping the fingers while in other countries. In America, you put up a finger to catch his or her eyes. In many parts of the world a fixed service charge is added to restaurant bills. In most American restaurants it is common to tip the waiter or waitress about 15% of the total bill. If the service was very good, you can leave a larger tip. If it was bad, you may leave less. The tip is usually left on the table, but you can also give it directly to the waiter or waitress. In better restaurant you pay your bill through the waiter or waitress. In expensive ones you pay it by yourself. Finally, if you are not able to finish your food, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for a "doggie bag" for the extra food.

If you want to get served in an American restaurant, how can you get your service?

A.By singing at the table.

B.By calling, whistling or snapping the fingers.

C.By putting up one of your fingers to catch the waiter or waitress's attention.

Man and Computer

What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don't yet(51)for? The answer is simple: People read newspaper stories(52)a reason to learn more about what they are interested in. Computers, on the other hand, don't. In fact, computers don't(53)have interests; there is nothing in particular that they are trying to find out when they read. If a computer(54)is to be a model of story understanding, it should also read for a "purpose".

Of course, people have several goals that do not make(55)to attribute to computers. One might read a restaurant guide in order to satisfy hunger or entertainment goals, or to(56)a good place to go for a business lunch. Computers do not(57), and computers do not have business lunches.

However, these physiological and social goals give(58)to several intellectual or cognitive (认知的) goals. A goal to satisfy hunger gives rise to goals to find(59)about the name of a restaurant which serves the desired type of food, how expensive the restaurant is, the(60)of the restaurant, etc. These are goals to(61)information or knowledge, what we are calling(62)goals. These goals can be held by computers too a computer might "want" to find out the location of a restaurant, and read a guide in order to do so(63)the same way as a person might. While such a goal would not(64)out of hunger in the case of the computer, it might(65)rise out of the "goal" to learn more about restaurants.

听力原文:Friend: I tried to phone you yesterday.

Diane: Oh, sorry. I was busy all day and then I went to London in the evening for a meal with some friends.

Friend: Did you take your car?

Diane: I left it at home. Parking's such a problem. But the underground was closed for repairs so I had to take the bus. It was quite slow.

Friend: Did you go to your favourite Spanish restaurant?

Diane: I was hoping to try some Mexican food but my friends booked a table in a Chinese place.

Friend: Was it expensive?

Diane: Quite cheap actually, and the food was very good — but it's only a small restaurant so a lot of people had to wait for tables — and it was quite noisy.

Friend: You didn't stay there and talk afterwards then!

Diane: We went for a walk along the river. It was too late for the cinema.

Friend: Didn't you get wet? It reined here all evening.

Diane: The wind was very cold but it stayed dry.

Friend: And then it snowed during the night!

Diane: That was after I got home. But I had a really good evening!

Listen to Diane talking to a friend about a trip to London.

For questions 11-15, tick (√) A, B or C.

One of the most popular places in Cuban Miami is a restaurant called Versailles, which als
o has lots of mirrors on its walls. It has been on Eighth Sweet and Thirty-Fifth Avenue for many years and shares the same name with the famous French palace. One goes to the Versailles not only to be seen, but to be multiplied (复制). This old, cheap, noisy restaurant that serves basic Cuban food is wonderful for the self-absorbed: people who like themselves very much. Because of the bright light, even the windows reflect (反射), the Versailles is a place where you can lunch, but you can't hide.

For years I have had the idea that those mirrors keep the blurred image (模糊影像) of every- one who has walked past before them. I think the mirrors have a memory. Every Cuban who has lived or set foot in Miami over the last 30 years has, at one time or another, seen himself or herself reflected on those shiny surfaces. Miami is a Cuban city not only because of the number of Cubans who live there but also because of the number who have died there. The Versailles is a shiny place where dead people are buried. The history of Little Havana is written on those walls. This may have been why, when the mirrors came down in 1991, there was such anger against it that some of them had to be put back. The Hall of Mirrors is also a house of spirits.

What is most special about Versailles according to the writer?

A.The blurred images reflected on the windows.

B.The number of French customers.

C.The expensive Cuban food.

D.The walls of mirrors.
