Man has always wanted to fly. Some of the greatest men in history had thought about the pr
oblem. One of there, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that would fly, But they were never built.

Throughout history, other less famous men had wanted to fly, an example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into air from a tall building. He did not fly every far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body.

The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large "hot air ballon". They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The ballon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year. The King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals land ed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind. Their trip last- ed twenty-five minutes and they traveled about eight kilometers.

Leonardo Da Vinci ______.

A.said that man would in the sky one day

B.built a kind of machine which never flew

C.drew many beautiful pictures of birds.

D.made designs for flying machines.

【英译中】Dolphins, like whales, must surface to breathe air through a blowhole on top o
f their heads. Dolphins are social animals and love company. Many of them, in fact, even enjoy being around humans. It is not uncommon to hear of dolphins giving rides through the water to humans.

In addition to being playful, dolphins are helpful to men. For example, as 400 B. C. the Greek poet Arion was saved from drowning by a dolphin. From then until now, dolphins have been helping swimmers who are in trouble. Swimmers, however, are not the only humans they help. In some parts of the world, they can be counted on to help men catch fish.

Moreover, dolphins are very intelligent. A dolphin's brain resembles a human brain, but it is larger. Consequently, some people claim that dolphins are really smarter than men. Of course, there is no way of proving this point. Brain size is not an absolute measure of intelligence. Furthermore, measuring dolphins' intelligence in other ways is not possible since men cannot fully communicate with them. Apparently, however, dolphins communicate with each other. At any rate, they make whistling, clicking and buzzing sounds which seem to be at least a form. of language. So far, however, men have not been able to figure out the communication code the dolphins use.

听力原文:M: Do you think women are generally better at certain things than men?

W: Well, it seems to me women are much better at dealing with more than one thing at a time. I don't know whether this has to do with the difference in their brain or whether it's just how they have to cope more often with more than one thing. For example, it is usually women who work, have babies, look after the babies and take the main responsibility for looking after the home. And maybe it's practicing all that makes women be better able to do more than one thing at a time. Men, it seems to me, can only concentrate on one thing at a time, including boring domestic things like washing the dishes. If a friend of mine who is a man washes the dishes he'll find it quite difficult to conduct a conversation at the same time, whereas if I'm doing the dishes I'm always talking to someone, probably cooking something as well, and finding that not too stressful.

M: Do you think women are more interested in personal relationships than men?

W: Generally, yes, though again I don't know if this is because that from an early age they are taught to please other people, whereas men are always taught to please themselves. I think relationships are more central to most women's lives. For example, I think men don't have very good conversations with each other, whereas women do. If you listen to women talking, often they will be having, after a relatively short time of knowing each other, fairly personal and truthful conversations, whereas men have conversations not about what I'd call real things. They will talk about their work in a very superficial way, or their interests in a very superficial way, for example, and football is the—um—just a sort of way for men to relate to each other without actually saying anything important, it appears to me.

According to the woman, why women are much better at dealing with more than one thing at a time?

A.She doesn't know the reason exactly.

B.Because women are smarter than men.

C.Because women have more things to deal with than men.

D.Because men always refuse to deal with more than one thing at the same time.

Men Too May Suffer from Domestic Violence

Nearly three in 10 men have experienced violence at the hands of an intimate partner during their lifetimes, according to one of the few studies to look(51)domestic violence and health among men.

"Many men actually do experience domestic violence, although we don't hear about it(52)," Dr. Robert J. Reid of the University of Washington in Seattle, one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health. "They often don't tell(53)we don't ask. We want to get the message out to men who(54)experience domestic violence that they are not alone and there are resources available to(55)."

The researchers asked study participants about physical abuse and non-physical(56)such as threats that made them(57)for their safety, controlling behavior. (for example, being told who they could associate with and where they could go), and constant name-calling.

Among men 18 to 54 years old, 14.2 percent said they had experienced intimate partner(58)in the past five years, while 6.1 percent reported domestic violence in the previous year.

Rates were lower for men 55 and(59), with 5.3 percent reporting violence in the past five years and 2.4 percent having experienced it in the past 12 months.

Overall, 30. 5 percent of men younger than 55 and 26.5 percent of older men said they had been victims of(60)violence at some point in their lives. About half of the violence the men(61)was physical.

However, the physical violence men reported wasn't as harsh as(62)suffered by women in a previous study; 20 percent to 40 percent of the men rated it as severe, compared to 61 percent of(63).

Men who reported experiencing domestic violence had more emotional and mental health problems(64)those who had not, especially older men, the(65)found.

听力原文: We do not know when men first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been used in many different ways throughout history. Historical evidence shows, for example, that people who lived over 3,000 years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to keep the dead from decaying.

Stealing salt was considered a crime during some periods of history. In the 18th century, for instance, if a person were caught stealing salt, he could be put in jail. History records that about ten thousand people were put in jail during that century for stealing salt! About 159 years before, in the year 1553, taking more than one's share of salt was punished as a crime. The offender's ear was cut off!

Salt was an important item on the table of a king. It was traditionally placed in front of the king when he sat down to eat, important guests at the king's table were seated near the salt. Less important guests were given seats farther away from it.

(33)

A.To keep fish alive.

B.To punish criminals.

C.To preserve dead bodies.

Men have distinguished themselves from other animals, and in doing so secured their surviv
al by the ability to observe and understand their environment and then either to adapt to that environment or to control and adapt it to their own needs. The process of careful observation, perception of a pattern in the phenomena observed, followed by use of this knowledge, has largely inspired the area of human activity known as "science".

It has also provided the basis for the traditional methodology of science. It includes objective observation, description of some phenomena, the statements of hypotheses(假说) about the events observed and possible relationships among them, the use of these to predict future events, the evidence of the hypotheses and the construction of a theory based on the evidence of the hypotheses.

But the classic "scientific method" has been criticized from a variety of points. To begin with, it is obvious that the "objectivity" of science strictly characterizes only the lowest order of scientific activity—observation. Even here it is doubtful whether anyone can be a truly impartial observer of events.

What someone chooses to observe and the way one observes it must, after all. in part be a reflection of experience and of ideas as to what is important. Consider, for example, the different ways in which an artist and a layman look at a painting and the different reactions they have to the same work. The construction of hypotheses and theories reflects the scientist's interpretation of what he or she has observed even more clearly than observation. At this stage of the scientific method, an element of subjectivity is inevitably present. This can most easily be seen in the extreme case of scientists of truly creative genius. Galileo, for example, challenged the scientists of his day with his hypothesis that the earth revolved around the sun. A twentieth century example is Watson and Crick's discovery of the molecular structure of DNA. Obviously, science may involve not only careful observation but also a willingness to be creative.

Human beings differ from animals because they can ______.

A.adapt to their environment

B.control their environment

C.adapt the environment to their need

D.observe and understand their environment

In Europe, men do not usually wear skirts. But the Scottish national costume for men is a
kind of skirt. It is called a kilt. The Scottish like to be different. They are also proud of their country and its history, and they feel that the kilt is part of that history. That's why the men still wear kilts at old-style. dances and on national holidays. They believe they are wearing the same clothes that Scottish men always used to wear.

That's what they believe. However, kilts are not really so old. Before 1730, Scottish men wore a long shirt and blanket around their shoulders. Theses clothes got in the way when they started to work in factories. So, in 1730 a factory owner changed the blanket into a skirt: the kilt. That's how the first kilt was made.

Then, in the late 1700s Scottish soldiers in the British Army began to wear kilts. One reason for this was national sentiment: The Scottish soldiers wanted to look different from the English soldiers. The British Army probably had a different reason. A Scottish soldier in a kilt was always easy to find! The Scottish soldiers fought very hard and became famous. The kilt was part of that fame, and in the early 1800s men all through Scotland began to wear kilts.

These kilts had colorful stripes going up and down and across. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the colors they liked best.

This is not the story you will hear today if you are in Scotland. Most Scottish people still believe that kilts are as old as Scotland and that the colors are as old as the Scottish families. Sometimes feelings are stronger than facts!

This passage is about _______.

A.Scottish men

B.the history of Scotland

C.kilts

D.Scottish families
