W: Yes. I went to New York to attend a summer course in English.

M: Wow. You were lucky. How long did you stay there?

W: About 50 days. I went there on July 5th and came back on August 25th.

M: How about the course?

W: The course was very good. The teachers were nice. They taught us to listen, speak, read and write in English, but it was mostly speaking. One interesting thing I found is freedom. You can sit anywhere you like in the classroom. You can ask the teacher questions at any time during the class, and you are welcome to share your ideas with the class. I really liked this kind of class.

M: How interesting! Maybe our teacher should try that.

What personal qualities are desirable in a teacher? Probably no two people would draw up
approximately similar lists, but I【M1】______ think the following would be generally accepted. Firstly, the teachers personality should be pleasant live and【M2】______ attractive. This does not rule on people who are physically plain,【M3】______ or even ugly, because many such have great personal charm, but it does not include those who are over-exciting, melancholy, frigid,【M4】______ sarcastic, cynical, frustrated, and over-bearing: I would say too, that it includes all of dull or purely negative personality.【M5】______ Secondly, it is not merely desirable and essential for a teacher【M6】______ to have a genuine capacity for sympathy—in the literacy meaning【M7】______ of that word; a capacity to tune in to the minds and feelings of other people, especially, since most teachers are school teachers, to the minds and feelings of children. Finally, I think a teacher should have the kind of mind which always wants to go on learning. Teaching is a job which one will【M8】______ never be perfect; there is always something more to learn about it. There are three principal objects of study: the subject, or subjects, which the teacher is teaching; the methods by which they can best be taught to the particular pupils in the classes he is teaching to;【M9】______ and—by far the most important—the children, young people, or adults to those they are to be taught.【M10】______

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue
to undertake to do for children that which only children do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity; it can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. "

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ______.

A.it is one of the most difficult school courses

B.students spend endless hours in reading

C.reading tasks are assigned with little guidance

D.too much time is spent in teaching about reading
