听力原文:W: Today we have with us Dr Michael White, a space scientist, to tell us about a
new space plane that British scientists are working on. Firstly, Dr White, could you tell us what the space plane looks like?

M: Well, it looks just like an ordinary plane, really. It’s about the same size as a plane, and it can carry about 50 passengers.

W: But it doesn’t act like an ordinary plane, does it?

M: No, it’s much faster. For example, you could fly from London to Beijing in only 30 minutes.

W: My goodness! And how does it work?

M: Well, shortly after taking off, the plane leaves the earth’s atmosphere and goes into orbit around the earth until it returns to the ground.

W: So it’s really a kind of space rocket.

M: Not really, no, for two reasons. First, a space rocket can only be used once, but this space plane can be used for many times. Second, while the plane is traveling through the atmosphere, the pilot can fly it just like an ordinary plane.

W: It sounds very exciting.

A.A satellite.

B.An ordinary plane.

C.A space plane.

Across the English Channel

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It's a hard work and it makes you short of breath. To fly over the Channel takes only twenty minutes (as only as you're not held up at the airport), but it's an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft if you don't mind the noise, and that takes forty minutes. Otherwise you can go by boat, if you dreams of being able to drive to France in his own car. "Not possible", you say. Well, wait a minute. People are once a gain considering the idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge.

This time, the Greater London Council is looking into the possibility of building a Channel link straight to London. A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be able to go by rail or by car on a bridge, whereas a tunnel would provide a rail ]ink only.

Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain becoming more conscious of the need for links with Europe as a result of joining the EEC(欧共体) ? Well, perhaps. The main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would reach the twenty square kilometers of London's disused dock land(船坞地). A link from London to the continent would stimulate trade and re-vitalize(使……重新具有活力) the port, and would make London a main trading center in Europe. With a link over the Channel, you could buy your fish and chips in England and be able to eat them in France while they were stiff warm!

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Swimming across the Channel takes less than four hours.

B.The idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge is a very new one.

C.It is considered to be more difficult to swim across the channel than any other means.

D.A tunnel or bridge would only reach as far as the coast.

(2) Most people have strong preconceptions about the British. But if you"re one of these people, you"d be wise to abandon those ideas. Visit a nightclub in one of the big cities, a football match, or a good local pub and you might more readily describe the English people as humorous and hospitable. It"s certainly true that no other country in the world has more bird-watchers, sports supporters, pet owners and gardeners than the U.K.

(3) Getting around England is pretty easy. Budget (廉价的) airlines like Easyjet and Rynnair fly domestically. Trains can deliver you very efficiently from one major city to another. Long distance express buses are called coaches. Where coaches and btises run on the same route, coaches are more expensive (though quicker) than buses. London"s famous black cabs are excellent but expensive. Minicabs are cheaper competitors, with freelance (个体的) drivers.

But usually you need to give a call first. London"s underground is called the Tube. It"s veryconvenient and can get you to almost any part of the city.

(4) The U.K. is not famous for its food. But you still need to know some of the traditional English foods. The most famous must be fish and chips. The fish and chips are deep fried in flour.

English breakfast is something you need to try. It is fried bacon, sausages, flied eggs, black pudding, flied tomatoes, flied bread and baked beans, with toast and a pot of tea. Other things like shepherd"s pie and Yorkshire pudding are also well-known as a part of English food culture.

(5) Pubbing and clubbing are the main forms of English nightlife, especially for the young. Pubbing means going to a pub with friends, having drinks, and chatting. Clubbing is different from pubbing and includes going to a pub, or a place of music, or a bar, or any other places to gather with friends.

Clubbing can be found everywhere. Usually there is some kind of dress code for clubbing, such as no jeans, no sportswear, or smart clubwear, while pubbing is much more casual.

A The need for good managers is not going away. It is intensifying. With "flatter&quo
t; organizations and self-directed teams becoming common; with personal computers and networks making information available to more people more quickly; the raw number of managers needed is decreasing. However, the need for good managers, people who can manage themselves and Others in a high-stress environment, is increasing.

B I believe anyone can be a good manager. It is as much trainable skill as it is inherent ability; as much science as art. You have confidence in yourself and your abilities. You are happy with who you are, but you are still learning and getting better. You are something of an extrovert. You dont have to be the life of the party, hut you cant be a wallflower. Management is a people skill--its not the job for someone who doesnt enjoy people.

C You are honest and straightforward. Your success depends heavily on the trust of others. You are an includer not an excluder. You bring others into what you do. You dont exclude other because they lack certain attributes. You have a presence. Managers must lead. Effective leaders have a quality about them that makes people notice when they enter a room.

D You are consistent, but not rigid; dependable, but can change your mind. You make decisions, but easily accept input from others. You are a little bit crazy. You think out-of-the box. You try new things and if they fail, you admit the mistake, but dont apologize for having tried. You are not afraid to "do the math". You make plans and schedules and work toward them.

The need for good managers is increasing.
