Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while others see it as a melting pot

. In a sense, both are correct depending upon one's point of view. In a bowl of freshly tossed salad, all the ingredients are mixed together. Yet they never lose their shape, form. or identity. Together, however, the ingredients make up a unity. In a sense, all the ingredients of a salad contribute to the finished product. They may be covered with the same dressing, but the green vegetables, tomatoes, lettuce and eggs can all be seen for what they are.

From this point of view, America is very much like a salad bowl where individual ethnic groups blend together, yet maintain their cultural uniqueness. They may work together during the day at similar jobs and in identical companies, but at night they may return to their ethnic communities where the flavor of their individual culture dominates their way of life. This is why perhaps there is so much diversity within America. Each ethnic group has its own special interests, language, food, customs and traditions to protect and defend. This idea of the salad bowl is referred to by sociologists as cultural pluralism. It simply means that American society is a collection of many cultures living side by side within one country.

The other concept which is also used to describe American society is that of the melting pot. In this usage, society is like a pot of stew (炖菜) or a cauldron (大锅) of porridge. All of the ingredients mix and blend together losing their identity and yield a bit of what they were to become a new reality. A pot of stew is very different from a bowl of salad. Within the stew, the meat and vegetables in the cooking process give to each other a bit of their own flavor. The longer the stew is allowed to simmer (炖), the better the taste and the more likely it will be for the mixture to dissolve.

In this sense, America can surely be seen as a melting pot where people from all over the world come to live and work together forming one nation. Whether a salad bowl or a melting pot, America can best be described as a mixture of both; that is to say, a nation where there is unity in diversity.

Why does someone see America as a salad bowl?

A.The Americans work together during the day and night.

B.Each ethnic group has its unique culture.

C.There is no culture diversity in America.

D.America society is a unity with one culture.

第3题
Some expressions describe people who are important or who at least think they are. One suc
h expression is "big wig". In the 17th century, important men in Europe began to wear false hair called wigs. As years passed, wigs began to get bigger. The size of a man's wig depended on how important he was.

The more important he was or thought he was, the bigger the wig he wore. Some wigs were so large that they covered the man's shoulders or back. Today the expression "big wig" is used to make fun of a person who feels important. People never tell someone he is a big wig. They only use the expression behind his back. "Big wheel" is another way to describe an important person. A big wheel may be the head of a company, a political leader, a famous movie star. They are big wheels because they are powerful. What they do affects many people. Big wheel gives the orders and other people carry them out.

As in many machines, a big wheel makes the little wheel turn. "Big wheel" became a popular expression after World War Ⅱ. It probably comes from an expression used for many Years by people who fit parts of the cars and trucks. They said a person whirled a big wheel if he was important or had influence.

The top of something is the highest part of something. So it is not surprising that top is part of another expression that describes an important person. The expression is "top banana". A top banana is the leading person in a comedy show.

The funniest comedian is called the "top banana". The next is second banana, and so on. Why a "banana"? A comedy act in earlier days often included the part where one of the comedians would hit others over the head with a soft object. The object was shaped like the yellow food — the banana. "Top banana" is still used mainly in show business. Yet the expression can also be used to describe a top person in any area,

A "kingpin" is another word for an important person. The expression comes from the game of bowling. The kingpin is the No. one pin. If it is hit correctly by the bowling ball, the kingpin will make all the other nine pins fall. And that is the object of the game. So the most important person in a project or business is the kingpin. If the kingpin is removed, the project or business is likely to fail. Kingpin is often used to describe an important criminal or the leader of a criminal gang. A newspaper may report, for example, that the police have arrested the suspected kingpin of a car stealing operation.

This passage is mainly about______.

A.important people

B.how to describe important people

C.important expressions

D.expressions for important people

Hiring Wisely

Evaluating a person's relational abilities is a bit more difficult. Try the following techniques to ferret out a candidate's skills in the four dimensions of interpersonal work.

If you find yourself wanting to hire the candidate regardless of his talents, he's probably a master in the influence dimension. Some other signs to look for include a history of being elected to leadership positions and a broad and deep professional network -- especially outside the person's current place of employment. People who score high on influence frequently serve on the boards of relevant professional and social organizations. During the interview, pose questions with no right answer and then assess how confidently and persuasively the candidate expresses himself. (9) Did it have anything to do with influencing a decision?

When you want to assess a candidate's adeptness at interpersonal facilitation, try asking him to describe a work situation in which two people were in conflict. (10) Next, look for evidence of broad and deep personal and professional networks, especially inside his current place of employment. (11) Finally, ask him to describe a job that he wouldn't want to do--not for lack of competence but for personal reasons. Would that position require an uncomfortable level of toughness toward other people, such as managing a turnaround in which a number of employees will lose their jobs?

To determine whether someone is relationally creative, start by having him describe a favorite advertising campaign, slogan, or image, and then have him explain why he loved it and found it so effective. Ask the candidate to describe a time when he was "in the flow"-- so immersed in his work that he lost track of time- and see whether he cites a task that required a high level of relational creativity. (12) People who score high in this dimension frequently give creative or offbeat answers.

(13) So be sure to ask the candidate about activities outside work and see if he holds a leadership role in any of them. Ask him, too, to describe his ideal job. Probe for details such as how many people he would be interacting with and in what way. Next, have him describe the best customer service operation he's ever experienced, either as an employee or as a customer. Notice how excited he gets while discussing it. (14) Is he someone who inspires you to go out and give it your all? If so, he's got a special talent in the team leadership dimension.

A And since most people who excel in this dimension participate in some kind of good cause, ask him to talk about his experiences in that realm.

B If you find yourself wanting to hire the candidate regardless of his talents, he's probably a master in the influence dimension.

C Another way to gauge his interest and ability in this dimension is to ask about a peak moment he's had at work.

D People talented in this area usually have a long history of involvement with groups -- for instance, sports teams or social clubs.

E In fact, pay close attention to how much energy and enthusiasm the person exhibits during your conversation generally.

F Finally, ask what other careers he has considered.

G Someone who's talented in this dimension will offer an insightful explanation of what might have been going on under the surface of the disagreement.

H People who are skillful in this respect are more talkative and persuasive.

If you want to take the whole family on holiday, and keep everybody happy, then I have found just the place for you. I recently went with a group of friends to stay at the Greenwood Holiday Village, which is open from May until October.

Built in the centre of a forest, Greenwood is a great place to stay whatever the weather. Its main attraction for families is the indoor World of Water, where young and old can have fun in the different pools. Some of these, however, are for serious swimmers only.

For sporty people, the Country Club offers tennis, squash and badminton. If your children are too young to join in these sports, there are activity clubs. Greenwood is a good place for families as it is traffic-free — you explore on foot or by bike. Some people complained that this was inconvenient, but I was pleased to be out in the fresh air. For evening entertainment, there are shows and cinemas.

Accommodation is in a variety of apartments of different sizes. These have up to four bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom, as well as a dining area. Before going, I thought the apartments might not be big enough for all of us, but I was pleasantly surprised — it was not too crowded at all.

I'1l definitely go back to Greenwood next year. Why don't you give it a try? Visit their website for further information now!

What is the writer's main purpose in writing this text?

A.to give her opinion of the holiday village

B.to describe what her family did at the holiday village

C.to give advice to a friend going to the holiday village

D.to complain about the holiday village
