When I was a little boy, I really liked my older brother, Tom. He was the best pitcher (投手) on his baseball team, the Dreams. I always played catch (接球) with Tom. He threw so fast that I couldn't often catch the ball. He always asked me, "Have you had enough yet, Mark?" But I said I wanted to play more. I wanted to be a good player like Tom.

When I was ten years old, I joined a team, the Stars. I didn't join the Dreams because my friends on the Stars wanted me to join them. I practiced very hard with my team every Saturday afternoon. The next summer came, my team was going to play against the Dreams. I thought, "I want to hit Tom's basketball, but it will be too fast for me to hit." I practiced hitting basket- balls harder than before. I talked with Tom about the game. He said, "With my basketball, my team is going to win."

One Saturday afternoon we had the game. It began at 1: 00. Mother came to watch us. No one could hit Tom's basketball. The game was coming to its end. My last chance came. I had to hit his basketball.

"Strike one," called the umpire (裁判员). "Oh, that's fast!" I thought. Tom looked great.

He threw again, but I couldn't hit that one, either. "Hit the next ball. Mark," the players on my team shouted. I thought, "How can I do that? No one has hit his basketball since the game began. But I have to hit it for our team."

Tom threw again. It was another basketball. I kept my eyes on it. This time I was able to hit it! I watched the ball in the sky and started to run. A player on the Dreams ran fast to try to catch it, but he couldn't. I was safe! Everyone on my team shouted, "You did it!" I was very happy. But when I saw Tom, I could't be happy any more. He was watching me. He didn't look happy.

The next player on my team didn't hit Tom's basketball. That was the end of the game. The Dreams won.

After the game I went to Tom, but I didn't know what to say to him. He said to me with a smile, "You hit my basketball very well." I said, "Thank you." Tom said to me, "You hit my basketball today, but next time it will be much faster. O. K.?" I answered him with a smile, "Yes, I'll practice much harder, Tom." Mother listened to us and said, "Tom and Mark, you both did a very good job." She looked very happy.

Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Tom was the best pitcher on the Stars.

B.Mark was the best pitcher on the Dreams.

C.Tom thought that his team would win.

D.Mark was sure that he could hit Tom's basketball.

•Read the following review of a book called Never Quit! The Ups and Downs of Running
a Family Business.

•For each question 23-28.on the opposite page.choose the correct answer.

•Mark one letter(A,B,or C)on your Answer Sheet.

Never Quit! The Ups and Downs of Running a Family Business

picked up the book Never Quit! The Ups and Downs of Running a Fami|y Business thinking that I could read it between flights, hoping that in the pages of the book,I'd find some little piece of sales wisdom to restate at the upcoming sales manager's meeting that's where I was flying. And so I began reading in the terminal.

Even after the plane settled into its altitude,I couldn't put Never Quif!down.I continued to read, even forgetting to make a few notes in a margin. The notes were already made. The author has bullet list after bullet list of helpful pointers. But what absorbed me most was the story of running a family business.Gray offered personal glimpses of challenges as well as successes.and then held them both up as examples of opportunity for positive growth.

This is a business book, yes. However,it is a family business book. There are the real stories of real people. But the real art of this book is the encOuragement it provides to small business owners to define core principles and when those are challenged,to use those core beliefs to find another method to achieve the desired right results. And so,when a business owner meets with something they believe is beyond their control, they will redefine success or the ways they might getthere. They will neverquit.

The focus on customer service also came at a goodtime for me;this is a huge talking point at our company, which is struggling to maintain excellent customer service at a time when sales are(thankfully)outpacing customer service rep availability, and so customer interactions are being timed and evaluated. It's a challenge, but I found something in almost every chapter of Gray'sbook that boils customer service techniques down to something as simple as a customer-friendly greeting. It makes it seem do-able.

This book is going to be popular with family business owners everywhere. It is well-written,but more important.it is a good read.I've decided to buy a copy for everyone in our sales and service department, and to keep it in my briefcase to refer to again and again.

The reviewer decided to read the book because

A.one of his friends told him lhe book was excellent.

B.he was sure he would get some useful advice.

C.he thought he might collect some information for the meeting.

A white-haired elderly gentleman steps out of his car, brief case in hand and coat over hi
s arm. He has called from the office to say that he is on the way. His wife is preparing supper. He can see the light shining inside his own front door. He looks forward to a fire and his slippers. It is a cold night. A few seconds later he is lying on the icy side-walk in a pool of his blood.

It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen in the capital city of the United States. It is likely to happen in the near-deserted city center at night, in a parking lot in the shadow of a federal building. It is more likely to happen in one of the grey fringe areas between the poor ghettos and the residential areas. It could happen any time in the ghetto itself where people don't walk at night; more American city crime and most of Washington's is by poor against poor. It seldom happens in the tree-lined streets of north-west Washington.

It did happen last week. Senator John Stennis was the victim of a classic Washington street crime. He happened to be an important politician, but that is not why he was shot. What happened to him could happen to any of us.

Senator Stennis, who was 71, got out of his white Buick Electra at 7:40 p. m. ,outside his home at 3609 Cumberland Street. Two youths said, "Get me up." He put up no resistance. He handed over his wallet containing credit cards, driving license, and the like, a gold watch and the only money he had in his pockets—twenty five cents. The youths said either, "Now we're going to shoot you anyway," or "We ought to shoot you anyway." Anyway they did. One bullet hit him in the fleshy part of the thigh, struck the bone, and disintegrated. The other entered his chest just below the breast pocket of his suit. It narrowly missed his heart.

Amazingly he made it across a ten-foot sidewalk, up four steps, along twenty more feet of concrete pathway, three more steps and a six-foot landing, His wife met him at the door, and saw two men running. The Senator told her to call the police and an ambulance.

Senator Stennis was a powerful political figure, but it is unlikely that the two young knew who he was. More likely his offense was that he had no more cash than a quarter—not enough for a fix, not enough for two cups of coffee. One is warned always not to carry money on the streets of Washington.

Senator Stennis was ______ when he was shot.

A.going to work

B.coming home from work

C.going out for the evening

D.coming home from a party
