TV Goes Digital

Coming soon to your TV: views of the hottest live basketball plays from any seat in the stadium. What a better look at that three-point shot? Call for a replay from behind the basket. Or better yet, follow the "view" of the ball as it goes through the net.

While watching, you might use a built-in speakerphone to talk with a fan in the stands. Or send the score via e-mail to your father in Japan. Sounds impossible? It won't be when the computerized television industries combine to create digital TV-machines that receive, send, store, and manipulate TV programs the way computers now manipulate other data.

Industry and government representatives recently reached an agreement on how this technology will take place. New digital TVs that allow current TVs to receive digital signals may hit stores by next spring.

To understand how the digital revolution will change the way you watch TV it helps to know how TVs work now. Today, TV networks such as CBS and Fox broadcast TV shows as analogue electrical signals. These signals travel via the airwaves, satellites, or cable as a continuous stream of electromagnetic energy(like light and radio waves). But this system leaves a lot of room for error. The main problem is that interference can change the voltage of the signal as it travels. This may result in a distorted or miscolored picture. If we send out the signal in a form. that is nearly free from interference-binary(两位数的)code, pictures and colors are not distorted.

You'll need to buy a new TV to receive these signals. And the new sets may cost 1,000 US dollars more than today's TVs. But they'll come with other benefits that may make the price worthwhile. For one thing, the screens will be wider, like movie screens. In addition, the color will be richer. And you'll also get digital CD-quality sound.

Besides these benefits, digital TVs can offer you a much wider choice of programs. Digital data can expand TV choices because computers can compress digital signals. Broadcasters will be able to send six times as much information on the same "channel".

All the following qualities are mentioned in the passage EXCEPT ______.

A.interference-free pictures

B.a richer color

C.a wider screen

D.good reception of signals

Futurologists have not been very precise about how and how much digital media will change
our lives. Most of comments have focused on the expectation that consumers will soon be able to use their TV or PC to shop, bank and order movies from their armchairs. Commentators envisage more dramatic change to everyday life. Nucholas Negroponte, director of MIT's Media Lab, believes that a key development over the next five years will be the "personalization" of the computer, with wearable devices such as a wrist-mounted TV, computer and telephone. Peter Cochrane, head of research at British Telecom, looks further ahead, asking us to "imagine a virtual reality interface, with your visual context flooded by information from spectacle-mounted or contact lenses augmented by directional audio input, tactile gloves and prosthetic arms and fingers that will give you the sensation of touch, resistance and weight".

Historically, enthusiasts for new technologies have usually been over-optimistic about the speed of change. Most new technologies take longer to be adopted by the general public than these enthusiast experts, although there have been exceptions: once they had reached critical mass, VCRs and mobile phones took off faster than most experts predicted. Arguably, everyday life in the advanced economies changed more between the 1880s and the 1930s than in the last fifty years or, possibly, the next. Nevertheless, it is valid to talk about a digital "revolution", since the extent of change is dramatic by many standards and digital technology is its biggest single driving force. Even if the enthusiasts overstate how quickly things will change, they may turn out to be right about the scale of that change.

At this stage, no one knows how the digital revolution will develop. Although the technology itself is now becoming somewhat more predictable, exactly how, and how fast things will change will depend not Only on technological developments but also on the policies of key commercial and political players, especially in the US, Less predictable is how enthusiastically consumers will take to this technology on an everyday, mass market scale. Least predictable are the sociocultural and geopolitical responses: Will the digital revolution lead to greater international understanding or bitter rivalry? Will it encourage materialism and erode religious belief, or lead to religious backlash? Will it make people happier?

What is the passage mainly about?

A.The likely impact of digital technology on everyday life.

B.The improvements made in the world of mass communication.

C.The applications of digital media in businesses and our lives.

D.The overoptimistic feelings people hold about the new technologies.

A total of 4.6 million digital televisions have been sold, and the sales of HDTV sets have
quadrupled since last year. Consumers have bought HDTVs to play their DVDs and to have clearer pictures and wide screens. Only a small percentage of the people who have purchased HDTVs, however, have actually hooked their TVs up to receive high-definition television digital signals. Perhaps television viewers are having trouble keeping up with the changes in technology. Even the manufacturers of HDTVs, like Mitsubishi, Thomson Multimedia, Sony, and Samsung seem to have a tough time learning how to make their sets work with the various digital TV formats because little standardization has been required or implemented in the industry.

Some of the HDTVs Weigh over 200 lbs., and a variety of retailers offer a delivery service to the buyer's home to help install the heavy sets. This is known as a white-glove service and usually comes with an extra fee. After HDTV purchasers get their sets home and hook them up, they will still need to Work to get the digital signals to their systems. Most of the industry's cable providers do not yet offer high-definition programing, and only about 15% of commercial television stations have switched over to even the lowest improved digital pictures. Worse yet, viewers may need to install antenna before they can even get the digital signals to their new HDTV sets. Another frustration for home-theater seekers is that the current HDTV sets allow owners only to watch high-definition programs, not to record them.

According to the first sentence, the sales of HDTV sets since last year, by the time when this article was written, had reached______.

A.4.6 million

B.9.2 million

C.18.4 million

D.I do not know how many
