听力原文: Well, I manage a small branch of a large super-market, and we lose a lot of money through shoplifting. I have to try to prevent it or else I'll lose all my profits. A lot of shoplifting is done by young people, teenagers in groups. They do it for fun. They're not frightened so we have to make it difficult for them. Obviously a supermarket can't have chains or alarms on the goods, so we have store detectives, who walk around like ordinary shoppers, otherwise they'll be recognized. We have big signs up, saying: "shop-lifters will be prosecuted," but that doesn't help much. We've started putting cash desks at all the exits, we've found we have to do that, or else the shoplifters will walk straight out with things. Of course, that worries the ordinary shopper who hasn't found what he wanted. We also use closed-circuit television, but that's expensive. In fact all good methods of prevention are quite expensive, and naturally they make our prices more expensive, but it has to be done, otherwise shoplifting itself will make all the prices much higher, and the public doesn't want that!

We live in a society in there is a lot of talk about 【M1】______
science, but I would say that there are not 5 percent of
the people who are equipped with schooling, including
college, to understand scientific reasoning. We are
more ignorant of science as people with comparable 【M2】______
educations in Western Europe.
There are a lot of kids who know everything about
Computers who to build them, how to take them apart,
how to write programs for games. So if you ask them 【M3】______
to explain about the principles of physics that have gone 【M4】______
into creating the computer, you don't have the faintest idea. 【M5】______
The failure to understand science leads to such
things like the neglect of the human creative power. 【M6】______
It also takes rise to a blurring(模糊) of the distinction 【M7】______
between science and technology. Lots of people don't
differ between the two. Science is the production 【M8】______
of new knowledge that can be applied or not, since 【M9】______
technology is the application of knowledge to the
production of some products, machinery or the like.
The two are really very different, and people who have
the faculty for one very seldom have a faculty for the other.
Science in itself is harmless, more or less. But as

harmful. No society has yet learned how to forecast the 【M10】______
consequences of new technology, which can be enormous.

W: It's all right! And OK with you?
M: Yeah, but you look a little upset today. Anything wrong?
W: (19) Oh, I've got a problem with my daughter Christina. She's seventeen now. And next year she'll go to college. (20) But all in her mind are only fashions and boys but learning.
M: Sally, it's quite normal for girls of Christina's age to focus on the opposite sex and fashions alike. We used to be young, right?
W: But her grades slipped sharply. Without good grades, you'll never enter a top university. Without college degree, how can you get a job, let alone a good job in the future?
M: Then I think what you need is to sit down and have a talk with her.
W: Talk about what? She knows everything. Her father gets some money to send her abroad after graduation. Christina is surely clear about that!
M: But even if she will go abroad someday, she has to learn English well anyway, right?
W: That's the headache! (21) I've signed up for a language training session for her already. Anyway, she has to work hard by herself.
M: (22) Why not talk everything with her teacher in school? It will help!
W: Great idea! I've never thought about that. I'll take it to her teacher tomorrow. Thank you!
M: My pleasure. I did it for my son last time!

Getting a Chinese visa was easy enough. The Mongolian embassy (大使馆) seemed a bit unprepared for me, or in fact any other tourist, wanting to visit the country in winter and it took half an hour of knocking at the door before I got an answer. The Mongolian visa, however, has a map of the country in the background that should come in handy if I get lost out on the grassland.
It was getting a Russian visa that had me wondering if I'd ever be able to leave. The requirements for the visa, especially for the trip that ! plan to take, were a mountain of paperwork. I was required to prove, for example, where and when I plan on staying in each city and what train I plan to catch between cities.
I've spent a lot of time preparing for this trip, but ! still have no idea what to expect on this journey. The planning and packing has taken my mind off any worries I have so now everything is ready and I just want to get going. I'm sure I will see some interesting people and see some wonderful sights, and the sense of the unknown makes it all the more exciting.
How do the writer's friends feel about the delay of his trip?
A.Grateful.
B.Impatient.
C.Delighted.
D.Worried.
听力原文:W: Shall we continue, John?
M: Yeah. After "time-out", I'm energetic again!
W: You are really interesting!
M: You mean I scored?!
W: Ha-ha, yes. You are so popular now that many people want to know something about your life. Can you share it with the audience?
M: Thank you. I'm glad I can bring you happiness.
W: What is the easiest thing for you in the United States?
M: The easiest thing for me is sleep. When you are in bed, you have nothing to worry about. What worries me most in the States is leaving my home. Whenever you are outside, many things are there waiting for you to deal with.
W: What's your favourite TV programme?
M: My favourite TV programme is called "Parenthood".
W: In the past year, you must have had a lot of pressure from the media. Have you had some relief this year?
M: I get some relief at least before a game starts. But it's hard to describe the pressure you have when you're playing.
W: Who do you think is more important, Rockets point guard Steve Francis or yourself?.
M: Everybody is important. I always think so. The five people on the court aren't the only ones. Those sitting on the benches are as important. Everybody is a part of a machine,
W: When you were straggling not long ago, some people in China felt disappointed at you, and there were also some comments about you on the Internet. Did you read those comments? Did they annoy you?
M: I read some of them. Yes, they annoyed me. But the people I am going to face are not those who wrote the comments but the players I play against and my teammates.
(20)
A.Being criticized by his teammates.
B.Having not enough sleep.
C.Being unable to surf on the Internet.
D.Being away from home.
