ave a comfortable house near the sea.

During the winter they would be quite happy, but every summer a lot of their relatives used to spend holiday in their house, and it was much cheaper than staying in hotel. How have you prevented all your relatives from coming to live with you in summer?” “Oh,” the friend answered, “that is not difficult. 听力原文: Now, let me first give you a brief introduction to the American poet, Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson was America's best-known female poet and one of the foremost authors in American literature. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, Dickinson was the middle child of a prominent lawyer and one-term United States congressional representative, Edward Dickinson, and his wife, Emily Norcross Dickinson. From 1840 to 1847 she attended the Amherst Academy, and from 1847 to 1848 she studied at the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College) in South Hadley, a few trips to Boston for eye treatments in the early 1860s, Dickinson remained in Amherst, living in the same house on Main Street from 1855 until her death. During her lifetime, she published only about 10 of her nearly 2, 000 poems, in newspapers, Civil War journals, and a poetry anthology. The first volume of Poems of Emily Dickinson was published in 1890, after Dickinson's death.

Although few of Dickinson's poems were formally published during her lifetime, she herself "published" by sending out at least one-third of her poems in the more than 1, 000 letters she wrote to at least 100 different correspondents. Dickinson's method of binding about 800.of her poems into 40 manuscript. books and distributing several hundred of them in letters is now widely recognized as her particular form. of self-publication. She also read her poems aloud to several people, including her cousins Louise and Frances Norcross, over a period of three decades.

Well, that's all about her life. Now shall we concentrate on her famous poem, "Success is Counted Sweetest".

听力原文:Girl: Are you busy Dad? I've got something I want to ask you. I've been invited t
o a party on Saturday. Would you give me a lift there?

Man: Where is the party then?

Girl: It's at Tom's house. His sister is 18 on Saturday, and they're having a big

celebration. It's going to be brilliant. They're having a disco and Tom's Mum's a wonderful cook, so the food will be good. They've invited all their friends from school but their cousins will be there too.

Man: Well, I hope the weather stays warm so you can be outside. It sounds as if a lot of people are coming. But it all sounds fine to me. It'll be nice for you to go out at the weekend. You spend too much time at home studying. Now, what time does the party start and what time does it finish?

Girl: It starts at eight o'clock and finishes about half past twelve. But Jane's going as well, and her Dad will collect us and bring us home afterwards. It's all arranged.

Man: Mmm ... it'll be difficult for us to take you. Mum and I are going to see a film which starts at 7:15. Let's see. Why don't we collect you and Jane at the end of the party? Then you could ask Jane's Dad to take you both to the party at eight.

Girl: I'm sure that'll be fine. I'll go and give Jane a ring.

Man: Just one thing though — we'll pick you up at 11:30. I really think that's late enough.

Girl: Oh Dad! That's so early. Remember we don't have to go to school on Sunday! Don't make us leave an hour before everyone else.

Man: Well, I suppose it is the weekend. Let's say midnight. But definitely no later.

Girl: But ...

Man: That's my final decision! Now go and ring Jane before I change my mind!

Girl: Okay.

The family in the western world has changed greatly during the last two centuries.

Before the nineteenth century, families usually arranged marriages for their children. Young people did not decide whom they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. This family was an important part of the larger family of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and other relatives.

By the nineteenth century, most young people could choose whom they wanted to marry. Marriage joined two people and not two families. The reason two people got married was because they loved each other. It was not just because the families wanted them to marry.

At the same time, parents began to realize that they had to take very good care of their children. They had to take care of their health and try to give them an education. Before this, most people did not go to school. But now education was necessary for a good life.

The parents decided they should have fewer children so they could give each one a good life. They thought it was important for the mother to spend as much time as possible with her children. Before, the family all worked together at home. After 1800 more fathers worked outside the home for money. Mothers stayed home and had greater control of the home and children. Most homes didn't produce anything. The other relatives were still important, but they were separated more than before.

Family life is changing even faster in the United States today. There is almost one divorce for every two marriages. Over 10 percent of families have a mother and children but no father. At least half of all children will live part of the time with only one parent. Fifty percent of all mothers work outside the home.

Some social scientists think that soon there will be no family life in the United States as we know it today. They do not know how people will live. Others think society needs families, and we will always have them.

The family in the western world

A.has changed a lot during the last two centuries

B.hasn't changed at all during the last two centuries

C.has changed a little during the last two centuries

D.has become bigger and bigger
