Text 3

Do you find it very difficult and painful to get up in the morning? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: "Get up, Peter! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is that Peter is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrel ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but yon have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably______.

[A] he is a lazy person

[B] he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

[C] he is not sure when his energy is low

[D] he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

A man who knows a bit about carpentry (木工术) will make his table more quickly than the man who does not. If the instructions are not very clear, or the shape of a piece is puzzling his experience helps him to conclude that it must fit there, or that its function must be that. In the same way, the reader's sense and experience helps him to predict what the writer is likely to ,say next; that he must be going to say this rather than that. A reader who can think along with the writer in this way will find the text.

This skill is so useful that you may wish to make your students aware of it so that they can use it to tackle difficult texts. It does seem to be the case that as we read we make hypotheses (假设) about what the writer intends to say; these are immediately modified by what he actually does say, and are replaced by new hypotheses about what will follow. We have all had the experience of believing we were understanding a text until suddenly brought to a halt by some word or phrase that would not fit into the pattern and forced us to reread and readjust our thoughts. Such occurrences lend support to the notion of reading as a constant making and remaking of hypotheses.

If you are interested in finding out how far this idea accords with (符合) practice, you may like to try out the text and questions. To do so, take a piece of card and use it to mask the text. Move it down the page, revealing only one

t a time. Answer the question before you go on to look at the next section. Check your prediction against what the text actually says, and use the new knowledge to improve your next prediction. You will need to look back to earlier parts of the text if you are to make accurate prediction, for you must keep in mind the general organization of the argument as well as the detail within each sentence. If you have tried this out, you have probably been interested to find how much you can predict, though naturally we should not expect to be right every time -- otherwise there would be no need for us to read.

Conscious use of this technique can be helpful when we are faced with a part of the text that we find difficult: if we can see the overall pattern of the text, and the way the argument is organized, we can make a reasoned guess at the next step. Having an idea of what something might mean can be a great help in interpreting it.

The author uses the examples of carpentry and reading to show______.

A.the importance of making prediction

B.the similarity in using one's senses

C.the necessity of making use of one's knowledge

D.the most effective method in doing anything

听力原文:W: can I help you?

M: Yes, I'm looking for a book on the presidential election system in the United States.

W: Well, all of our textbooks are arranged by subject and course number in the back of the store. Is this a required text for one of the University's political science courses?

M: No, it isn't. I've already looked through all the political science books in the back, but the ones I saw only had a few pages, at most, on the topic.

W: How about the paperback section? There may be some thing there.

M: Okay.

W: Or better yet, you should try looking in Books in Print.

M: I've never beard of that. What is it?

W: It's an index that lists all of the books currently available from publishers. If you have a specific book in mind, you can look under the author's last name.

M: But I don't.

W: Then look directly under your subject, presidential e lections.

M: What happens if I find a book I want?

W: Well, if it's not in stock, we can order it for you.

Text 4

British scientists have been given £ l million by the European Commission to find out if a ro-bot (机器人) can safely be employed to stir (搅拌) soup.

The research, based at the Bristol Robotics Lab (BRL) , will look at the problems of a human and a robot working together in the same space; for example, in a kitchen where the service robot is performing a task such as stirring soup while you add cream.

Professor Chris Melhuish explained, "When we work with other humans, we are trying to un- derstand facial expression, body movements, quality of voice, as well as sharing a goal and und standing and following spoken instructions. "

" For example, in the soup situation, not only does the robot need to know what the goal is (making the soup)but he also needs to know how hard to stir the soup, what it means when you hold up your hand to say enough, to understand the look of pain on your face if you acci dentally get wet with hot soup, and to stop stirring when told. The research aims to develop the rules we need to introduce this level of cleverness into service robots who are working closely with people. "

Professor Melhuish, of the BRL, said robots working in factories at present are kept behind gates for safety reasons-a measure that is not practical in the kitchen.

The research is a joint effort between robotic engineers and scientists from West of England and Bristol universities.

68. According to Professor Melhuish, a service robot should be able to ______ .

[A] understand human instructions

[B] show feelings by the looks on its face

[C] follow the thoughts in its master's mind

[D] express itself through body movements
