The origin of the almighty dollar is in what is now the Czech Republic. In 1519 ,a silver

mine near the town of Joachimstal literally "Joachim's valley," from the German Tal, meaning valley began minting a silver coin called, unimaginatively, the Joachimstaler. The coin, which was circulated widely, became better known by its clipped form, the taler. In Dutch and Low German, the initial consonant softened to become daler. English adopted this form, eventually changing its spelling to the modern dollar.

In the American colonies, there was no standard currency. The coin that was in widest use was the Spanish Peso, known also as" Pieces of Eight" because it could be divided into eight pie-like pieces. The English colonists informally assigned the name dollar to this coin. In 1785, when the Continental Congress established U.S. currency ,they adopted dollar as name for the standard unit of currency ,at the suggestion of Governeur Morris and Thomas Jefferson ,.because the term was widely known and was not associated with any form. of official English currency. Jefferson also coined the term disme, from the French dixieme, for a tenth of a dollar. Pronounced deem, it eventually became dime.

The origin of the $ sign has several folkloric stories attached. One says that Thomas Jefferson invented it, perhaps as a sort of monogram for TS. Jefferson was the first to use the symbol in relation to the U.S. dollar, but this story is fanciful. Another says that originally it was U superimposed over an S,for U.S. of course. Eventually the base of the U eroded due to poor printing technology, leaving an S with two lines through it. Another says that it is a variant of a figure eight that appeared on the Spanish Peso, standing for the pieces of eight. This Past is close to the truth, but not quite there.

The Spanish royal family used on its escutcheon, two pillars representing the Pillars of Hercules in Gibraltar and Morocco crossed by an unfurled banner reading" Plus Ultra." This symbol appeared on the Peso, and looked much like the modern $ sign. It was adopted as a symbol for the Peso in the American colonies, and was transferred to the dollar.

The U.S. was the first nation to adopt an official currency named the dollar. In 1797 ,the Bank of England began minting" dollar" coins as bank-issued currency. Other nations that have adopted the name dollar for their currency have done so in emulation of either the U.S. or this short-lived Bank of England practice.

What does the phrase" clipped form" (L4 Paral ) mean?

A.A silver coin.

B.Old German coin.

C.Another name of the same thing.

D.A shortened form. of a long name.

听力原文: With the development of economies and the advent of globalization, many large co
mpanies tend to go out of their own countries to establish multinational corporations (MNC). Today, we shall explore how an MNC works and what the advantages are.

When a corporation expands its activities overseas and engages in international trade, it could be on the way to becoming a multinational corporation. A multinational corporation has industrial and commercial organizations in foreign countries. Manufacturing plants are established abroad, along with supporting marketing systems. These activities have political and economical implications.

International markets are developed when an MNC finds limitations in the home market. It tries to approach a foreign market in the most effective way — either on the local level or nation, al level.

Decisions made in an MNC axe locally inspired. But major decisions are made by a central management, located in the country of the origin of the MNC. In a transnational corporation, decisions are made by officials of the overseas nationality. The country of the origin do not interfere with the decision making process.

How multinational can a corporation get? Some companies, like Nestl6 of Switzerland, make over 90% of their sales on exports and manufactured goods abroad. Today, the large MNCs control from 50 to 200 foreign branches with 30 to 90 percent of their sales exported and produced abroad.

A favourable aspect about MNCs is that they create jobs in foreign countries. They also contribute to innovation or creation of new products and technology. But when innovation levels off and local technology reaches a point of sufficiency, MNCs are sometimes considered to be no longer useful. At this point MNCs rum the risk of nationalization.

Most MNCs are made up of vast numbers of foreign subsidiaries, companies in which over 50 percent of shares is owned by the parent company. Like all corporations, MNCs are organized according to the goals they set for themselves. They strive to retain' access to the resources that ensure the smooth operation of a company: raw materials, manpower, and capital. Furthermore, they try to grow in the global corporation by increasing their access to world resources. This leads them to expand their foreign market position, in other words, to increase their market share.

? Look at the notes about multinational corporations.

There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widel
y accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world, even the season al changes, as unpredictable, and they sought through various means, to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or unveiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama.

Those who believe that drama evolved our of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances, and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division, was usually made between the "acting area" and the "auditorium". In addition, there were per formers, and since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mined the desired effect—success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun —as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.

Another theory traces the theater's origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this view, tales(about the hunt, war, or other feats)are gradually elaborated at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.The origins of theater

B.The role of ritual in modern dance

C.The improtance of storytelling

D.The variety of early religious activities

听力原文:W: Today, we invite Mr. Sonderim to talk something about the Euro. Mr, Sonderim,
could you tell us the origin of the Euro?

M: Well, the 1992 Maastricht Treaty proposed a single currency between the European Union. The participating countries decided on the name "Euro' at a summit in Madrid in 1995 and the currency was launched on January 1, 1999.

W: What is it worth?

M: When the Euro was launched in 1999, one Euro was worth 1.17 US dollars or 71 British pence. However, the weakness of the Euro zone economies compared with that of the United States, combined with the inexperience of the European Central Bank in dealing with the international markets, has meant that since its launch the value of the Euro had declined significantly. In December 2001, one Euro was worth little more than 89 cents or 63 pennies, a 20 percent drop on its initial value.

W: Do you think it will affect the daily life of ordinary people?

M: I suppose so. For example, one of the major headaches for participating countries has been the con version of public telephones, vending machines, and shopping trolleys to accept Euro coins. Al though a conversion process has been in full swing since before 1999, there are reports that some countries are not ready for the Euro.

W: So what does it look like?

M: There are seven notes designed by the Austrian artist Robert Kalina. The designs show the "seven ages" of European development, with windows and gateways on the front, and bridges on the back. In addition, there are eight coins designed by the Belgian artist Luc Luycx. All Euro coins are round, but have differences in composition, weight, thickness, and milling to ensure that the blind can easily distinguish between them. On the front there is a European design, common to all coins, and on the back a "national" design from the central bank of issue. Despite the "national identities'', all coins can be spent throughout the Euro zone regardless of their origin.
