Robert Beckett, who broke his leg and had to have it set at the local hospital, was given
something to put him to sleep while this rather painful process was going on. All he remembered afterward was that a white-coated man made a prick in his arm—the body hardly felt it—and then sat down beside him and asked him to count slowly to ten. (46) (47) While Robert was couting, the anaesthetist was pressing the plunger of the syringe and injecting into his arm a small amount of liquid that looked like water. The liquid was not water, but a solution containing a drug that was powerful enough to put Robert to sleep and keep him there while his leg was being set. The same drug would not have been powerful enough to keep Robert unconscious had he required serious surgery. For operations where the patient must remain unconscious for an hour or more, the anaesthetist must administer the right amount of anesthetic continuously. (48) It is usually not an injection, but a kind of gas that the patient breathes in through a mask placed over his face. (49) Like most other early medicines, they were extracted from plants. Four plants producing such drugs were particularly well know—the poppy, henbane, hemp and mandrake. Poppies are still used as a source of morphine, a very widely used drug. (50) Today hemp is most often used as raw material from which rope is made, but it is still known in parts of Central South America as "the weed that intoxicates". The other herb, mandrake, is almost unknown today, but it was widely used among the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, and peoples of the Far East. According to one legend, the mandrake plant, when pulled from the ground, was supposed to give an unearthly shriek, so dreadful that a person who heard it died or went mad.

A. The type of anesthetic he uses depends on the patient and the type of surgery to be performed.

B. Robert got as far as seven, then woke up in bed with his leg in plaster.

C. The prick that he felt was caused by the hollow needle of a hypodermic syringe.

D. That was the state of affairs until the beginning of the last century.

E. Henbane is not so well known, though it is still used in some medicines.

F. Drugs that cause unconsciousness and kill pain are not new.

听力原文:M: Hi! Dr. Hyde?

W: So, what seems to ha the problem today?

M: Well, I just came in for a check up and a dental cleaning.

W: Hum. Open up. Let's take a look.

M: Okay. Uh...

W: Hum. Wow! I've never seen one like this before. Let me try this.

M: Uhhh...Ouhhhh [Man screaming in pain].

W: Well, there is a major cavity in one of your wisdom teeth. Hasn't this given you any trouble?

M: Well, the tooth has been bothering me, and it sometimes hurts when I drink something cold. Does it look that bad?

W: Well, we're going to remove the decay, and then we'll either put a filling in, or if the decay is extensive, we can't repair it, we might have to put a crown on your tooth. Or as a last resort, we may have to extract the tooth.

M: Uh, well, that sounds painful!

W: Don't worry. I've done this once before. Nah, just relax.

M: Wait! Aren't you supposed to give me something to dull the pain?

W: Uh, Oh yeah. I almost forget. We can use a local anesthetic to minimize the discomfort you might feel. Or you can just grin and bear it.

M: Nah, nah, nah! Put me under! I can't stand pain, and I'd rather not be aware of what's going on. And, if I need a filling, can I get one that leeks like my other teeth?

W: If we can save the tooth with a filling, I recommend a high-strength silver alloy filling instead of a porcelain one. It'll probably last longer.

M: Okay, well, whatever. Let's get it over with.

W: Okay, pleasant dreams. Drill please.

A.He wanted to have a filling replaced.

B.He came in for a dental check up.

C.He came in for some dental advice.

Hypnosis(催眠)

1 Increasing numbers of American doctors are using a technique known as hypnosis. They say hypnosis often can help persons suffering pain and stress. It also can help speed the healing of bums, and treats some forms of asthma and some skin diseases. Hypnosis is not new. It has been used for many years both in scientific research and to please crowds at public gatherings,

2 Hypnosis is commonly described as a condition similar to sleep. But, experts say it is more a form. of deep thought. The thought becomes so intense that it is longer just a thought. To the per son, it becomes reality.

3 Hypnotized patients are reported to have increased self-control and a reduced sense of pain. Some doctors use hypnosis to limit pain during a medical operation. Hypnosis is used mainly when the patient may have problems with usual anesthetic or pain-killing drugs.

4 Experts say there is little chance that a patient will awaken during such an operation. But, if this happens, the operation is temporarily halted, and the patient hypnotized again. Doctors may advise hypnosis for women who are giving birth. Dentists may use it in place of traditional pain-killing drugs, such as novocaine (麻醉药).

5 Hypnosis also has been used to treat burn victims. Researchers have found that bum victims who are hypnotized improve faster that those who are not. But, they are not sure why this happens.

6 Hypnosis can reduce or end a patient's pain. But experts say this does not mean the patient is cured. The problem that caused the pain still must be treated.

7 Experts also say persons cannot be forced to do something they would normally oppose. That is why hypnosis often is not effective in treating cigarette smokers and persons who eat or drink too much. The success of the technique depends on how much someone wants it to succeed.

A. Hypnosis Can Reduce or End a Patient's Pain

B. Why Hypnosis Is Not Effective in Treating Cigarette Smokers and Some Other Illness

C. Hypnosis Can Treat Bum Victims

D. The Definition of Hypnosis

E. The Function of Hypnosis

F. The Importance of Hypnosis
