听力原文: Many of us believe that a person's mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr. Lissy F. Javik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Jarvik has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik's continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 8Os, their minds did not generally decline as was expected.

However, there was some decline in their psychomotor speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they last very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik's studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only into the 30s and 40s but also into 60s and 70s as well.

As for learning new things, and ability to remember, studies by Dr. Jarvik and others show that the old are equal to the young. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call "loss of memory" is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at a speed that was too fast.

In the cases where the older person's mind really seems to decay, it is not necessarily a sign of a decay due to old age or "senility". Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state. The depression usually can be counteracted by counseling, therapy with a psychologist, or medications which fight depression.

回答题。

Trust

When Frank Dale took over as publisher of Los Angeles Herrald-Examiner, the organization had just ended a ten-year strike. There was much bitterness and, as he told us, himself to everybody, to thank them for their loyalty to that point, and to allow them to express their concerns and frustrations. To questions like "What makes you think you can make this thing go ? " he responded, "I don&39;t know yet, but in thirty days I&39;ll come back to you and let you know what I&39;ve found." He recruited a task force of the best people from throughout the Hearst Corporation to do a crash study, and in thirty days he had a written report on what needed to be done, which he shared with the staff. He had taken the all-important first steps to establish mutual trust, without which leadership would not have been possible.

Trust is the emotional glue that binds followers and leaders together. The accumulation of trust is a measure of the legitimacy of leadership. It cannot be demanded or purchased; it must be earned. Trust is the basic ingredient of all organizations, the lubrication that maintains the organization, and it is as mysterious and difficult a concept as leadership and as important.

One thing we can say for sure about trust is that if trust is to be generated, there must be predictability, the capacity to predict another&39;s behavior. Another way of putting it is to say that organizations without trust would resemble the ambiguous nightmare of Kafka&39;s The Castley here nothing can be certain and nobody can be relied on or be held responsible. The ability to predict outcomes with high probability of success generates and maintaining trust.

听力原文:M: Oh, it is terrible! Aboard Aerolineas Argentinas flight 386, 368 passengers we
re given pre-prepared food on their way from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles.

W: Then what happened?

M: A few days after arriving in Los Angeles, one passenger died, and 74 others were seriously ill.

W: And what is the reason for that?

M: According to Dr. Phillips, it was the highest single outbreak of cholera in the United States this century, and the airline passengers were the victims of this new epidemic of cholera, a disease not seen in Latin America since 1895. They were just a few of the more than one million people affected in 20 countries, including at least 10,000 who died in the following three years after 1991.

W: Cholera? To the best of my understanding, that disease has been dead for some time now.

M: But it has come back. Dr. Phillips says that cholera is by no means the only old infection on the comeback, and it is one of the major infections that are fighting back fiercely against man's attempts to control them.

W: But what are the reasons for the comeback of so many dead diseases?

M: Phillips says a single reason can't explain why a new disease appears or an old one returns, and usually a combination of factors are involved.

W: What kind of specific factors?

M: Dr. Phillips in his book Plagues on Our Doorstep presents some reasons.

W: What are they?

M: First, international travel and commerce. The cholera aboard flight 386 and mosquitoes living in imported tires are examples of these. Second, technology and industry. For example, the technology in Britain's processing industry was a likely contributor to the emergence of mad cow disease. Third, the breakdown of public health measures. Declining health resources have resulted in the erosion of once highly-valued health services.

W: Well, that's just unbelievable!

(26)

A.A flight to Los Angeles.

B.A book written by a doctor.

C.A disease on the comeback and its reasons.

D.Man's effort to control disease.
