Rock Music in its Early Stage

Rock music, which is short for rock 'n' roll, in its true sense, refers to the music of the young. Rock music is American on both sides of the family if you trace its pedigree far enough. Its technical elements have come down through the commercial rock-and-roll and rhythm-and-blues of the 1950s from the two deepest fountains of American popular music, black blues and white country music. But in 1965, the two traditions fused to create the genre now widely known as rock music, largely thanks to the emergence of Bob Dylan. Now, rock is a part of popular music today. It is played and listened to in almost all the countries of the world.

Until the 1950's, American popular music was divided into three separate styles, each with its own performers, musical content, and audience. One style. was called "pop", and it served most Americans. Pop songs came from movies, Broadway musicals, and pop composers. The songs were mainly simple, 32-bar melodies whose words were about love. They were played by bands in dancehalls, restaurants, nightclubs, and on radio. The bands consisted of any where from six to more than 20 musicians playing combinations of trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and clarinet, with a rhythm section of drums, guitar, string bass, or piano. Soloists or small vocal groups generally accompanied the bands.

In the late 1930's and 1940's, there were hundreds of "big bands". The most popular included the white bands of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Woody Herman. There were also the more jazz-style. black bands of Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. After World War II, individual singers such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat ("King") Cole, Doris Day, and Patti Page, most of whom had been band singers, became much more popular than the bands themselves.

The second style, "rhythm-and-blues", came from the blues sung by black performers along with the fast dance music that had grown out of ragtime and boogie-woogie. It was the popular music of the black people of the United States, played and sung in taverns and clubs or listened to on records in jukeboxes(自动点唱机). (Once called "race" music, it is now called "soul".) Two of the most popular rhythm-and-blues performers of the 1940's and early 1950's were Chuck Berry, B. B. King.

Both the white pop bands and the black rhythm-and-blues musicians were influenced by jazz and by Negro spirituals and gospel music(福音音乐).

The third style. is now called "country-and-western", but before World War II it was often called "hillbilly" music. It includes the commercialized folk music of the rural South and the cowboy music of the Southwest. The main center of the music has always been Nashville, Tennessee. It is performed largely by soloists accompanied by guitar and sometimes by horns and a rhythm section. The popular singers of the 1940's and 1950's included Hank Williams.

Rock and roll was the name given to the music that developed when these three separate styles came together in the early 1950's. It is widely believed that the term "rock and roll" was first used by a Cleveland disc jockey(流行音乐节目主持人) named Alan Freed. He was one of the first people to bring rhythm-and-blues to white audiences. He did this on his radio program and through concerts he produced, beginning in 1951, which presented black and white performers to audiences of black and white teenagers. That year, Alan Freed began a regular program featuring rhythm-and-blues music; Freed called the program "Moondog's Rock and Roll Party". The show became an instant hit among local white teenagers. Between 1951 and 1954, the white adolescent fascination with rhythm-and-blues that Alan Freed championed and popularized became a nationwide phenomenon. But not any one person created rock and roll. Rock was born as a result of changes in the music, broadcasting, advertising and e

It is difficult to say exactly how the music we call "rock" or "rock and roll" began. Its
roots go back to many different countries and many different kinds of music and musicians.

Rock music developed mainly from the interaction of black African and white European music. The Europeans and the African slaves who came to America during the seventeenth century each had their own different kinds of music. Black Africans used heavy drumbeats, a rough singing voice, and the calling of a melody and answer of a chorus. The white Europeans, mostly English and Scots, used a stronger melody, a less heavy beat, and instruments such as guitars, horns, and fiddles. The history of rock and roll is the history of how rock evolved from these two traditions.

From the seventeenth to the twentieth century, musicians in the southern United States developed two new forms of music: the blues, usually played by blacks, and country music, played by whites. Black musicians sang the blues accompanied by a guitar. This music was similar to work songs: stories of troubles and pain, with lines that were repeated several times. The words "rock and roll" probably came from the black churches in the South, where people sang spiritual music and danced to the strong rhythms, which they called "rocking and reeling". At the same time, whites were playing country music, which was mostly traditional dancing music and slow songs that told sad stories. The singers were accompanied by string instruments such as fiddles and guitars. During this time blues and country musicians had some influence on each other, but the influence grew stronger after phonograph records became popular in the late nineteenth century. The birth of the electric guitar changed country and blues music in the 1940s. The sound of the electric guitar would become the sound of rock and roll. No one thinks of early rock and roll without thinking of Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock and Roll". Elvis was an ordinary boy. He grew up poor, learned to sing in church, and became a truck driver when he graduated from high school.

No one thought that this young man with the guitar would change popular culture. But after he recorded two blues songs in Memphis, everything changed. He sang throughout the South, and teenagers went crazy over his amazing voice and his attractive performances. His music was an exciting mixture of white country and black blues. With his long hair and tight parts, he became a teenage idol In two years, he was a national phenomenon.

Elvis's career then went downhill, He went into the army, then stopped performing and made a series of bad movies. He continued to record, but his music rarely had the life of his early songs. He remained the symbol of rock and roll, however, not only in the United States but also around the world. He died in 1977,at the age of 42,but his music did not die with him. Rock music continues to develop and change, but the heart and soul of rock is the same heart and soul that Elvis expressed.

The passage is mainly about ______.

A.the life of Elvis Presley

B.the history of American music

C.the development of rock and roll

D.the development of black African and the white European music

Today's trumpet (小号) is one of the world's oldest instruments. It is the result of many centuries of development. Although it looks nothing like its ancestors, there are many similarities. All trumpets are hollow tubes. They are all blown. And they all use the player's lips to produce the basic sound.

The trumpet developed as players and makers worked to improve its design, size, shape, material and method of construction. They wanted to create an instrument that would produce a beautiful and attractive tone, enable the performer to play all the notes of the scale, extend the range higher and lower, make it possible to play more difficult music, and in general, be easier to play well. The remarkable way in which the modern trumpet achieves these goals is a measure of the success of all those who struggled to perfect this glorious instrument.

The trumpet is actually the leading member of an entire family of related instruments. There are trumpets of several different sizes, and in several different keys.

The trumpet is a link to many different periods of history and to people of many cultures. From the use of trumpets in ancient religious ceremonies to the part they play in modern rock bands, the trumpet family of instruments has much to tell about civilization and its development.

It can be inferred from the passage that ______ is needed to make the trumpet work.

A.air pressure

B.daily cleaning

C.keen eyesight

D.longer fingers

For all the talk of his sustained adolescence, no performer made a more compelling entranc

He wasn't an apparition rising out of obscurity, like Elvis Presley. To become who he was in "Oil the Wall,'' he had to annul—if not destroy—the performer he had been in the Jackson 5,

However, the change was【48】______ (organ) as well as deliberate. Michael Jackson grew into his body, and out of that new body emerged wholly new ideas of what pop music, and the【49】move___it generates, were, it can be hard to remember now, 30 years later, just how ubiquitous the hits from that album, especially "Rock with "You," really were. In soul, in rock n' roll, and in pop, there is a long tradition of men singing in high voices, the height of the voice suggesting the pitch of the singer' s fervour. Michael Jackson made the sweetness of that high voice guttural and【50】______ (demand). He showed that it was rooted in his feet and hips and hands. He re-sexualized it in a way that you could never really mistake—then—as androgynous.

Very few artists—certainly very few child stars—have ever redefined themselves as thoroughly or as【51】______ (success) as Michael Jackson did. His second act was better than any number of first acts put together. The uncanny thing wasn't just his physical transformation, or his hypnotic new ability to move. It was the certainty of ''Off the Wall" and its sequel "Thriller" that this was the music we wanted to hear. He knew, too, that this was a music we wanted to【52】______ (visual) , to see formalised and set loose in dance. In a sense, he was loosing his transformation upon the rest of us , expecting us to be caught up in the【53】excite______the music caused in him, and we were.

Michael jackson came to be synonymous with transformation—ultimately, with an eerie stasis that comes from seeking transformation all the time. The alchemy of change worked longer and【54】______(well) for him—through the'80s and into the early'90s—than it has for almost any other artist. Yet somehow all the changes always take us【55】______ to the album in which Michael Jackson grew up.

Chinese Buddhist Music Catches Audience in HK

中华佛教音乐吸引香港听众

The Hong Kong Cultural Center in Victoria Bay was packed on Thursday night, and loud applause periodically echoed through the neon lit sky. It was not rock music nor was it pop—it was traditional Chinese Buddhist music that made an instant hit in the modern metropolis.

Hong Kong is the fourth leg of the Buddhist music performance tour by a troupe consisting of more than 130 monks from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. And this is also the first time monks from across the Taiwan Strait had jointly set up a troupe to perform, on global stages.

Crowds of Hong King residents were lining up at the local port waiting to welcome members of the troupe who were sailing in from Macao, where they had just ended another successful performance on Wednesday night.

The monks returned the enthusiasm of the residents with a powerful performance. Almost without sleep, the monks drove to the concert hall preparing the stage and doing the rehearsals.

Buddhist music, which originated from ancient India, found its way into China some 2,000 years ago, and after absorbing elements of traditional Chinese folk music, court music and other religious music, a unique form. which is now called Chinese Buddhist music came into being.

The monks of the troupe come from prestigious Buddhist temples including Fo Guang Shah Temple in Taiwan, Shaolin Temple in central Henan Province, Labrang Temple in northwestern Gansu Province, and General Temple in southwestern Yunnan Province, representing the three branches of Buddhism in China, namely Chinese Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Pali Buddhism.

The wind sweeping across the Victoria Bay was cool, but the atmosphere in the concert hall was hot. The audience was mesmerized by the great variety of genres of Chinese Buddhist music.

"It's great to see so many genres of Chinese Buddhist music performed on the same stage," said a female bank employee surnamed Chang, "It's so fascinating," she said.

Calling it a happy event in Hong Kong, the Venerable Kwok Kuang, president of the Hong Kong Buddhist Association, said that the concert served as a prelude to the display, in Hong Kong on May 26, of a relic from Famen Temple preserved in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

He said that Buddhism and Buddhist music in the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong had the same roots, and through the performance by monks from across the Taiwan Strait, the traditional religious art would be further developed and bring more happiness to the Chinese.

Co-sponsored by the Chinese Buddhism Association of China and Fo Guang Shan Temple in Taiwan, the troupe was formed in February this year and has since staged four successful performances in Taiwan and Macao, and will move on to Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US and Vancouver of Canada from Friday.

Hailing the joint performance as a major event in the history of Buddhism, Hsin Ting, deputy chief of the troupe and abbot of Fo Guang Shan, said that both the monks and the support staff had been working together very harmoniously ever since the formation of the troupe, indicating their inherited strong ties.

"I hope the troupe's tour to North America will help the world community better understand Chinese traditional culture, especially the harmonious relationships among the people across the Taiwan Strait," he said.

How was the Chinese Buddhist music troupe received in Hong Kong?

A.It was welcomed like any other rock or pop music bands.

B.It was not as welcome as rock or pop music bands.

C.It was so welcome that it would visit Hong Kong for the fourth time.

D.It caused a great sensation among the local people.
