听力原文: Penury was what people called a mystery man. We had known him for over seven years, ever since he became a member of our modest club, but he had a way of keeping his private life to himself in all but the unessential details. We knew his address, though he never invited us to his home, and his age, too, but only unimportant matters of this kind. It seemed that he did not have to work for a living as we did, in our various ways. He had once hinted about an inheritance on which he managed to live comfortably. He was not, however, a man of luxurious habits: he was not especially well dressed and he did not even have a car. At the age of forty-five he was still a bachelor though. Since marriage was not a subject he ever discussed, we had no means of finding out whether he regretted not having a wife.
Penury disappeared suddenly from our circle and shortly afterwards we came to learn the first really solid facts about our mystery man. From reports that appeared in the newspapers, together with photographs of the man who was without doubt, our Mr. Penury, it was revealed that he was the most accomplished burglar in the London area; and that he had practiced this profession for many years, until he was arrested and sent to prison.

听力原文: Mary did not like getting up early in the morning. If her sister did not wake her, she would be late often for her classes. One day a lecture was going to be given By a famous artist at nine o'clock. Her sister and brother-in-law were away. She set her alarm for half past seven. This should give her plenty of time to get ready and arrive early enough for a good seat. She was determined to be there in time. She would never forgive herself for missing the lecture. She had been admiring the artist's work since she was a child.
The next morning, she slept through the alarm and woke up at half past eight. She was not used to rushing and everything went wrong. At last, she was ready, and rushed out to catch a bus. She jumped on the first one. She looked at her watch, but it was not there. She must have forgotten to put it on in her rush. When she arrived at the university, she hurried to the lecture hall. She was astonished to find that the doors were locked. She looked round to find someone, and saw a clock which said half past seven, "I can't understand it!" she cried out. "Nobody's here and the clock is slow!" Then she suddenly remembered. Her alarm clock had stopped the day before and she must have forgotten to reset the hands. "This is the first time I'll hear the beginning of a lecture," she said to herself, laughing.

Dear Mr. Leigh Richards,
As I was unable to access the questionnaire online, I am sending feedback on my hotel stay directly to you.
I was impressed by many of the facilities your hotel offers, but I especially enjoyed the state-of-the-art fitness center. It had three times as many machines as one normally finds in other hotels, and the 24-hour access made it possible for me to work out at any time I wished. Although I did not eat at European-style. restaurant, NoMi, I did order room-service dinners from there several times and was impressed with the quality of the meals. I was less enthusiastic about your business center, which could use a few more computers and a new copier. I was also disappointed in the lack of parking facilities.
Generally, I would say that the benefits of staying at your hotel far outweighed the disadvantages and that overall I had a pleasant week at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. As my job requires me to travel to Ohio frequently, I expect to become one of your regular guests.
Best regards,
Laura Godwin
