High Blood Pressure

There is evidence that the usual variety of high blood pressure is,in part,a familial disease.Since families have similar genes as well as similar environment, familial diseases could be due to shared genetic influences,to shared environmental factors,or to both. For some years, the role of one environmental factor commonly shared by families, namely dietary salt, has been studied at Brook—haven National Laboratory. These studies suggest that chronic excess salt ingestion(摄取)can lead to high blood pressure in man and animals. Some individuals, however, and some rats consume large amounts of salt without developing high blood pressure. No matter how strictly all environmental factors were controlled in these experiments, some salt-fed animals never develop hypertension(高血压)whereas a few rapidly developed very severe hypertensions followed by early death. These marked variations were interpreted to result from differences in genetic constitution.

By mating in successive generations only those animals that failed to develop hypertension from salt ingestion,a resistant strain(the R strain)has been evolved in which consumPtion of large quantities of salt fails to influence the blood pressure significantly. In contrast,by mating only animals that quickly develop hypertension from salt,a sensitive strain(the S strain)has also been developed.

The availability of these two strains permits investigations not therefore possible. They provide a plausible laboratory model on which to investigate some clinical aspects of the human developing methods by which genetic susceptibility(敏感性)of human beings to high blood pressure can be defined without waiting for its appearance.

The main idea of this passage is__________. 查看材料

A.Genetic constitution,or hereditary factor is all important factor that may underlie hypertension

B.Excessive use of salt may cause high blood pressure

C.Shared environmental factors may lead to familial disease

D.There are two different kinds of strains in animals which cause their different reactions to excess salt ingestion

More than 30,000 drivers and passengers who seat in the front of the vehicles are killed o
r seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third-floor building. Wearing a seat belt saves lives: it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.

Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you will be fined up to £ 50.It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver's responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind.

However, when you're reversing your car, you do not have to wear a seat belt; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; r if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember that you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove that you have been excused from wearing it.

How many people in front of the vehicles are killed or seriously injured every year?

A.30,000.

B.60,000.

C.Approximately 30,000.

D.Above 30,000.

听力原文: Many of you may have heard of jet lag, which is a condition of space disorders, resulting from rapid travel over time zones. Such as on a jet plane. The symptom of jet lag can be quite varied, and may include loss of appetite, nausea, headache, fatigue, insomnia, or even mild depression. Here are a few tips for you to avoid jet lag, or cope if you are stricken by the condition.

First, adjust your biological rhythm several days before your departure, and develop a plan to start switching to the time zone of your destination. For instance, if you will be flying from New York to Paris, where it is 6 hours later, get up one hour earlier for a couple of days, then 2 hours earlier, then 3 hours earlier, I will try to at least get half way to your new time zone. Turn lights on during day time in your destination, and off during the night time. Second, during the time of your adjustment, especially during the flight, drink plenty of water. If you are not a big water fan, drink some other fluid that is not high in sugar, carbonation and caffeine~ avoid junk food, salty food and caffeine, and alcohol on the plane. Of course I say that, but I always have a couple of drinks during the flight. If you do that, just be sure to drink as much water between drinks as possible. Thirdly, when you arrive in your destination, try to resist the urge to nap during the day time. Get outside, during the daylight hours, even it is just to sit in a caf6 and relax. Try to get a good night sleep for the 1st couple of nights. The key is to reset your body's natural clock and to get enough rest. Finally, when you return home, use some of the same tactics above to return to your previous time zone.

(35)

A.A flight over time zones.

B.A loss of one's characters.

C.A symptom of leg problems.

D.A condition of sleep disorders.

&8226;Read this text about FDI.

&8226;Choose the best sentence from the sentences that follow to fill each of the gaps.

&8226;For each gap 9-14, mark one letter (A-H) on your Answer Sheet.

? Do not use any letter more than once.

Advantages of FDI

Companies invest directly only if they think that they hold some supremacy over similar companies in countries of interest. The advantage results from a foreign company's ownership of some resources--patents, product differentiation, management skills, access to markets--unavailable at the same price or terms to the local company. This is known as monopoly advantages before direct investment. The cost of transferring resources abroad is increasing and there is perceived greater risk of operating in a foreign country. (9) . Companies from certain countries may enjoy a monopoly advantage if they borrow capital at a lower interest rate than companies from other countries. In recent years, capital markets have become international, so it is possible for companies to borrow abroad more easily if interest rates are lower there.

(10) . Currency values, however, do not provide a strong explanation for FDI patterns. The currency-strength scenario only partially explains direct investment flows. More internationally oriented companies can get advantage from spreading out some of the costs of product differentiation, R & D, and advertising compared to less internationally oriented companies. Among industry groups and groups of companies of similar size that spent comparable amounts on advertising and R & D, the more internationally oriented companies in almost every case earned more than the others.

(11) Besides, with inflow of equipment, the skills of local worker can be improved. New management can also be introduced to the local companies to improve the administration of the enterprises of the local management.

From the perspective of a nation, FDI may bring some benefits. FDI can make a positive contribution to a host economy by supplying capital, technology, and management resources that would otherwise not be available. The provision of these skills by an MNE (through FDI) may boost that country's economic growth rate. (12) . Technology is a catalyst that can stimulate a country's economic growth and industrialization. Technology can take two forms, both of which are valuable. It can be incorporated in a production process (e. g., the technology for discovering, extracting, and refining oil). However, many countries lack the research and development resources and skills required to develop their local product and processing technology. (13) . Such countries need rely on advanced industrialized nations for much of the technology required to stimulate economic growth, and FDI can provide it.

Foreign management skills provided through FDI may also produce important benefits for the host countries. Beneficial spinoff effects arise when local personnel who are trained to occupy managerial, financial, and technical posts in the subsidiaries of a foreign MNE subsequently leave the firm and help to establish local firms. (14) .

A. Besides, new advanced technology can be introduced to the host country.

B. On the other hand, local companies can enjoy the advanced technology which they lack.

C. Therefore, a company will not undertake FDI if it does not see a higher return than it can get at home country and if it does not think it can outperform. local firms.

D. FDI is especially important to developing countries.

E. This is particularly true of the less developed countries (LDCs).

F. Likewise, benefits may arise if the superior management skills of a foreign MNE stimulate local suppliers, distributors, and competitors to improve their own management skills.

G. Another adv

What difference does it make if we read texts displayed on a computer screen instead of on
paper printed with ink? The computer certainly does not guarantee deeper comprehension, greater subtlety of mind, or a wider range of imaginative reference. The mediation of a computer, however, puts new powers at the disposal of intelligence. For one thing, the computer itself can do simple reading--as I have noted, it can "read" an immense body of literature in search of designated(指定的)words. As anyone knows who has ever spent days in libraries in search of errant information, simply identifying relevant sources absorbs inordinate amounts of time in research. The objection may be raised that a search of texts by computer may block the occasional(偶然发现的)discoveries that occur while browsing in the stacks of great libraries. No member of the academy need fear that the use of a computer will keep him from the stacks, but browsing is, if anything, easier if texts can be called up on a screen in the serenity(宁静)of one's chosen surroundings.

The great deficiency of libraries, as we know them, is that while titles are catalogued, the libraries have no master indexes of the contents of books. Individual volumes, it is true r have indexes, often of inferior quality, but even the best indexes must be examined one at a time. The great advantage of the electronic library is that a computer could search and analyze its contents without proceeding volume by volume. As work in artificial intelligence develops, computer systems may also become adept at more complex tasks, such as summarizing texts, which has been accomplished experimentally.

What does the writer mainly talk about in this passage?

A.The deficiencies of the library in providing information.

B.The different applications of the computer and the library.

C.The advantages and disadvantages of the computer and library.

D.The advantages of the computer in search of information.
