Mr. Long was only thirty but drank for thirteen years. He spent much time in the restauran
ts and often drunk a lot there. He had a rich sister who often supplied him enough money. So he was never worried about food or clothes.

Once a young man began to work in his company. They met at a party and introduced themselves to each other. Mr. Long knew his name was Mr. Kidd and he came from another city. The young men liked to drink too and they became good friends. They always met in the restaurant at weekend and didn't leave there until they were drunk. Of course it was bad for their health. Their friends advised them to stop drinking, but they didn't listen.

It was Saturday again. Mr. Long called his friend and they decided to spend the evening in the restaurant. Mr. Kidd agreed to his opinion and got there in time. They drank one glass after another and they didn't stop until the men in the restaurant refused to sell the wine to them. They came out together and sat down at the side of the street.

Pointing at the moon, Mr. Kidd said," Your sun is smaller than ours!"

"We have a bigger one,' said Mr. Long "But I wouldn't show it to you. "

"I'll buy it for all the jewelry in world , "called out the first drunkard(醉鬼).

"What makes you think I'll sell it to you?" the other drunkard asked in reply(反问).

Mr. Long began to drink when he was ______ .

A.thirteen

B.sixteen

听力:What do we learn about Ben Carson?

Doctor Ben Carson grew up in a poor single parent household in Detroit. His mother, who had only a third-grade education, worked two jobs cleaning bathrooms. To his classmates and even to his teachers, he was thought of as the dumbest kid in the class, according to his own not so fond memories. He had a terrible temper, and once threatened to kill another child. Doctor Carson was headed down a path of self-destruction until a critical moment in his youth. His mother, convinced that she had to do something dramatic to prevent him from leading a life of failure, laid down some rules. He could not watch television except for two programs a week, could not play with his friends after school until he finished his homework, and had to read two books a week and write book reports about them. His mother’s strategy worked. “Of course, I didn’t know she couldn’t read, so there I was submitting these reports.” He said. “She would put check marks on them like she had been reading them. As I began to read about scientists, economists and philosophers, I started imaging myself in their shoes. As he got in the habit of hard work, his grades began to soar. Ultimately, he received a scholarship to attend Yale University. And later, he was admitted to the University of Michigan Medical School. He is now a leading surgeon at John’s Hopkins Medical School, and he’s also the author of three books.

This morning, when I first caught sight of the unfamiliar whitened world, I could not help
wishing that we had snow oftener, that English winters were more wintry. How delightful it would be, I thought, to have months of clean snow and a landscape sparkling with frost instead of innumerable grey featureless days of rain and raw winds. I began to envy my friends in such places as the Eastern States of America and Canada, who can count upon a solid winter every year and know that the snow will arrive by a certain date and will remain, without degenerating into black slush, until Spring is close at hand. To have snow and frost and yet a clear sunny sky and air as crisp as a biscuit—this seemed to me happiness indeed. And then I saw that it would never do for us. We should be sick of it in a week. After the first day the magic would be gone and there would be nothing left but the unchanging glare of the day and the bitter cruel nights.

第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

Scott was hoping to see many interesting things when he visited Hong Kong with his friend Ali. After they checked in the hotel, they began to discuss what they wanted to do first. Scott had a lot of information booklets(小册子) with him to help them decide.

"What I'd like to do is to go to Kowloon and visit the shops, "said Ali. "I've been looking forward to buying a watch while we are here. "

"Yes, "agreed Scott. "I'd like to do some shopping as well. Things are very cheap here. But maybe we should leave that until later. There are so many other things to do. To begin with, I'd like to take a boat trip round the harbor(港口) and look at all the ships. "

"That's a good idea, "said Ali. "Or we could take the railway to the top of the hill. I've always wanted to do that. "

" Me, too, " agreed Scott. " But maybe it would be better to leave that until the evening so that we can see the sunset over the harbor. "

Suddenly(突然)Ali looked at his watch. "My goodness! " he cried out. "It's 12 o'clock already and we haven't done anything at all. "

Scott and Ali were talking about______.

A.where they may get more information

B.which hotel they will stay at

C.what they should do first
