Have you ever heard of a four-year-old college student？ But this is true of Nicholas MacMahon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school.
Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.
His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn't stay there. His parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads newspaper every day, and he can play the violin well. He doesn't have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teachers want to help him in every way.

The true historian is not content to take all his facts from other historians. Today he makes sure that his statements are based on sound "documents" or "sources" which go back to the time of the facts themselves.
But the historian needs always to be in his guard net to be misled by his sources. A document may net be a real one. Its author may be lying on purpose for some reasons. He may be so greatly influenced by national, religious, party or personal backgrounds as to be totally unfair to the other side. If honest, he may be misinformed as to the facts and mistaken in his inferences.
Anyone who reads the accounts published in the different countries concerning the causes and results of wars will realize that the historian needs caution and training in handling these sources. The trained historian asks first: "Did this writer mean to tell the truth？" and second; "Was he in a position or frame. of mind to tell the truth even if he wants to？" Every statement must be patiently weighed and tested and combined with all other available information in order to get at the truth.

Eye Movement and Several Faults in Reading
Suppose you do this experiment with a friend. Get hold of a book with a large page size and lines that run right across the page. Get your friend to hold the book up and to read it with the top of the book just below his eye level. This means that you can watch the movement of his eyes as he reads the page. If you do this, you will see that your friend's eyes do not make a continuous forward sweep. Instead, they progress by little "jumps" moving, then stopping, as they progress along the line. This kind of jumping movement is called a saccadic movement(跳跃).
There has to he this starting and stopping movement because the eye can see only when it is still motionless. Every time the eye pauses it sees a phrase or even a sentence then jumps to the next part of the line and so on.
There is another interesting fact about eye movement. If you record the eye movements of someone who is reading, you will notice that, from time to time, the reader goes back and looks again at something he has read before; in other words, he regresses(回视) an earlier part of the text, probably because he realizes he does not understand the passage properly. Then he comes back to where he left off and continues reading. At one time, it was though that regression was a fault, but it is in fact a very necessary activity in efficient reading.
There are several different kinds of faults in reading, which are usually more exaggerated with foreign language learners. The most common one is that most people read everything at the same slow speed, and do not seem to realize that they can read faster or slower as required. Other people say the words to themselves, or move their lips-these habits slow the reader down to something near speaking speed, which is of course much slower than reading speed. Another habit that can slow you down is following the line with your finger, or with a pen.

听力原文： A good reader reads fast and understands most of what he or she reads. Although each person is different, most good readers share six characteristics.
First, most good readers read a great deal. They make time for reading and spend two full hours a day, three or four days a week, reading.
Second, Past readers look for the main ideas in their reading. They don't waste time and effort on unimportant details.
Third, good readers improve their comprehension ability by reading more and more difficult materials.
Fourth, fast readers plan their time for reading. Like students with assignments, good readers give themselves time limits, saying "I want to finish this book by tomorrow. How much time can 1 spend？"
Fifth, good readers set goals. To set a goal, they may read for fifteen minutes for quick understanding, then count the number of pages read and multiply by four. This gives them a number of pages to try to read each hour. Gradually, they increase these goals.
