听力原文:M: Miss Barnes, I understand that you are quitting.

W: That's right. I gave my supervisor two weeks advance notice yesterday.

M: If you don't mind my asking, why are you leaving us?

W: I'm going to work for another law firm, Ellington and Pitts,

M: Why are you going to work for them?

W: They offered me a better salary.

M: Well, Miss Barnes, good legal secretaries are hard to find and we've been quite satisfied with your work here. I'll be glad to match whatever Ellington and Pitts offered you.

W: You should have said that a month ago when I asked you for a raise. I started looking for a new job the next day.

M: I'll even give you ten dollars a week more than their offer.

W: It's not the money. I wouldn't work for you even if you offered to double my salary.

M: Then what is it for?

W: I want to work for someone who appreciates the work I do and gives me raises before I have to ask for them.

M: I'm sorry you feel that way, Miss Barnes.

W: And I'm sorry I spent the past year working for you.

第6题
When an invention is made, the inventor has three possible courses of action open to him:
he can give the invention to the world by publishing it, keep the idea secret, or patent it.

A granted patent is the result of a bargain struck between an inventor and the state, by which the inventor gets a limited period of monopoly and publishes full details of his invention to the public after that period terminates.

Only in the most exceptional circumstances is the life span of a patent extended to alter this normal process of events.

The longest extension ever granted was to Georges Valensi; his 1939 patent for color TV receiver circuitry was extended until 1971 because for most of the patent's normal life there was no color TV to re-ceive and thus no hope of reward for the invention.

Because a patent remains permanently public after it has terminated, the shelves of the library attached to the patent office contain details of literally millions of ideas that are free for anyone to use and, if older than half a century, sometimes even rem-patented. Indeed, patent experts often advise any other inventor's right is to plagiarize a dead patent. Likewise, because publication of an idea in any other form. permanently invalidates further patents on that idea, it is traditionally safe to take ideas from other areas of print. Much modern technological advance is based on these presumptions of legal security.

Anyone closely involved in patents and inventions soon learns that most "new" ideas are, in fact, as old as the hills. It is their reduction to commercial practice, either through necessity or dedication, or through the availability of new technology that makes news and money. The basic patent for the theory of magnetic recording dates back to 1886. Many of the original ideas behind television originate from the late 19th and early 20th century. Even the Volkswagen rear engine car was anticipated by a 1904 patent for a cart with the horse at the rear.

The passage is mainly about ______.

A.an approach to patents

B.the application for patents

C.the use of patents

D.the access to patents

听力原文: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Safari Park. I am Susan; I will lead you to visit the park. There are many beautiful animals in the park, and we will see them one after another. Follow me please! First, you'll see the Animals of Asia on your right. Some of them are not strangers to us, but as for many of them, we only heard of them from TV or radio. They are really beautiful. Just pass the Asian animals, you'll find Flamingo Pond. We're sure you'll like the beautiful pink birds. Continue a- long the walkway. On your right, you'll see the wild animals of the North American grassland. After that, it's Monkey Mountain where you'll notice the baby monkeys playing. The baby monkey sitting in the tree is the loveliest one here. Once visitors throw some food to them, he is always the first one to get it. But we'd better not throw food to them, because that will make the park easily dirty. Although the Monkey Mountain is attractive, we can't stay for too long time, because there are many other animals ahead.

What is the speaker?

A.A guide.

B.A visitor.

C.A teacher.

听力原文: The inhabitants of Tango, a small island in the South Pacific, discovered a plant that contained a powerful drug. This drug made it more difficult for them to think rationally—it stopped them worrying about the future, and enabled them to forget all their problems. At the same time, it made it much easier for them to relax and enjoy themselves: so much so, indeed, that the whole population of the island stopped working and spent all their time singing and dancing and looking at the sea. Unfortunately this had a very bad effect on the country's economy, and people began to run short of food. This, however, didn't discourage the people from taking the drug. The Prime Minister made speeches on the TV warning them about the drug, but nobody took any notice, and before long the economy was in ruins. This forced the Government to make the drug illegal. But that only made the situation worse. The law couldn't prevent the people from taking the drug, which grew wild all over the island. Eventually, the Government found a better solution: they exported the drug to other countries. This saved the islanders from having to work more than one day a week, and allowed them to spend the rest of their time sitting in the sun without a care in the world.

(26)

A.The drug made them lose &he ability to work.

B.The drug made it more difficult for people to think rationally.

C.The drug stopped people from worrying about the future.

D.The drug enabled people to forget all their problems.

听力原文:M: Good morning.

W: Good morning. How can I help you?

M: I understand that the school organizes...umm, trips to different...

W: Yes, we run five every month: three during weekends and two Wednesday afternoon trips.

M: What sort of places?

W: Well, obviously it varies, but always places of historical interest and also which offer a variety of shopping, because our students always ask about that...and then we go for ones where we know there are guided tours, because this gives a good focus for the visit.

M: Do you travel far?

W: Well, we're lucky here, obviously, because we're able to say that all our visits are less than three hours' drive.

M: How much do they cost?

W: Again it varies--between five and fifteen pounds a head, depending on distance.

M: Ah ha...

W: Oh, and we do offer to arrange special trips if, you know, there are more than twglve people.

M: All right. I'll keep that in mind. And what are the times normally?

W: We try to keep it pretty fixed so that students get to know the pattern. We leave at eight-thirty a.m. and return at six p.m. We figure it's best to keep the day fairly short.

M: Oh yes. And how do we reserve a place?

W: You sign your name on the notice board. Do you know where it is?

M: Ah ha. I saw it this morning.

W: And we do ask that you sign up three days in advance so we know we've got enough people interested to run it, and we can cancel if necessary, with full refund of course.

M: That's fine. Thanks.
