Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural preference, not an economic one. Knowing our own psychological space needs is important because they strongly influence your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were reared in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are, if you have two children or more, that you also will provide separate bedrooms for them. In America they train people to want their own private rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very rare in the world. In many cultures the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in a crib near their bed.
The areas in the home where people gravitate also reveals a lot about psychological space needs. Some families cluster, and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little niches where family members go to be alone.

听力原文： Medicine, law, and theology are known as the learned professions. That is, they require special study at the university level and beyond. Doctors, for example, do not begin to specialize in medicine until they have already finished four years of college. After that they must go to medical school for another four years. Even then they are not competent enough because they must serve as interns in a hospital for at least another year. Besides the above traditional professions, other occupations are also considered to be professions because of the amount of education required and specialization. A dentist used to be a barber who pulled teeth. Nowadays, however, dentists have to get university education similar to those of medical doctors. Architects, once considered artists or craftsmen, must now study special university programs. Both modem business practices and modem technology have also created many new professions. Accountants now have professional status because accounting is an important part of business. Engineering as a profession developed only after the Industrial Revolution, and science and technology have grown so rapidly that there are now many different specializations within engineering. Civil engineers, for example, deal with designing and building dams, bridges, and other structures, while electrical engineers work with generating, distributing and applying electric power.
Standards to practice almost all the professions are. set either by the government or by professional groups. Medical doctors must pass a state licensing examination and serve as interns before they set up their own practices. Law school graduates also have to pass a specific examination in order to become practicing lawyers. In short, it takes a long time and a lot of effort to be qualified for any of the professions.

The men and a lesbian couple unable to marry in California hope to take their case against the state' s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage all the way to the US Supreme Court and to overturn bans throughout the nation. A loss in the top court, two ranks above the action in the case which began on Monday, would seriously undermine efforts to win gay marriage rights in state courts.
The United States is divided on same-sex marriage. It is legal in only five states, though most of those, and the District of Columbia, approved it last year. Approval of Prop 8 in November 2008 was a sweet victory for social conservatives in a state with a liberal, trend-setting reputation, and maintained the steady success they have scored on the issue at the ballot box. Where it is legal, gay marriage has been championed by courts and legislatures, not voters.
"I don't think of myself as a bad person," said Paul Katami, describing the persecution he felt from a media campaign warning California parents to "protect" their children by voting against same-sex unions in the 2008 poll. He and his would-be husband, Jeffrey Zarrillo, described slights in gay life that ranged from being pelted with rocks and eggs in college to the awkwardness of checking into a hotel and not being able to clarify the relationship. "Being able to call him my husband is so definitive," Katami said. "There is no subtlety to it. It is absolute. " Gays and lesbians have nearly equal rights under domestic partnership laws, but the two men said that left them feeling second-or third-class citizens and they wanted to be married to have kids. "We hear a lot of 'What's the big deal？' The big deal is creating a separate category for us," Katami said.
Gay rights lawyers in the case describe their battle as a continuation of the fight against racist laws stopping whites and blacks from marrying. Marriage is a fundamental constitutional right, and in addition gays and lesbians deserve special protection from discrimination, they say.
