Towards the end of the 1990s, more than a decade and a half after Diet Coke was first intr

oduced, sale of Coca Colas best-selling low calorie drink appeared , to slow down. However, in the decade that followed, diet sodas grew by more than 30 percent. In 2009, sales pushed above $ 8. 5 billion for the first time. But Americas thirst for Diet Coke is running dry again-and this time it could be for good. The diet soda slowdown isnt merely an American thing—its also happening worldwide. But the future of diet colas is particularly cloudy in the United States. Low calorie sodas are fighting a hard battle against not one but two trends among American consumers. The first is that overall soda consumption has been on the decline since before 2000. Diet sodas, though they might come sugar-and calorie-free, are still sodas, something Americans are proving less and less interested in drinking. The second, and perhaps more significant trend, is a growing mistrust of artificial sweeteners(甜味剂). " Consumers attitudes towards sweeteners have really changed," said Howard Telford, an industry analyst. "Theres a very negative perception about artificial sweeteners. The industry is still trying to get its head around this. " Comment 1 Add me to the number of people addicted to diet colas who quit drinking soda altogether. I honestly think soda is addictive and Im happy not to be drinking it anymore. Comment 2 Perhaps the slowdown has something more to do with the skyrocketing cost of soft drinks. Comment 3 I LOVE diet drinks! Am I unhealthy? Who knows? I guarantee have a better physique than most 43-year-old men. Comment 4 This is a silly and shallow piece. The reason for the fall off is simply the explosion in consumption of bottled waters and energy drinks. Comment 5 As people learn more about health and wellness they will consume less sugar, less soda, less artificial sweeteners.

What do we know about diet soda sale?

A.It began to undergo a gradual drop starting from 2000.

B.It was on the decline since the 1990s but is on the rise now.

C.It reached its peak in the 2000s but began to drop since then.

D.It has been decreasing since the 1990s.

Winston Churchill was one of the great men of his age. To show their respect for him,
the British lawmakers asked a fine artist, Graham Sutherland, to paint Winston Churchill's picture. When it was completed, it was presented to him, at a grand affair in the Westminster Hall, at the House of Commons.

It was reported in the newspapers to show that Churchill accepted the gift. He described the painting as "a remarkable example of modern art", which drew loud laughter.

In fact he was unhappy with the painting. Sutherland later reported that he asked whether it was to be painted in with a "happy" or "fierce" attitude. "Fierce," replied Churchill. At the time, Churchill was coming to the end of his political life and was unhappy that people wanted him to end his career.

Some twenty years later it was revealed that Lady Churchill hated the painting so much that she had it destroyed. "It was preying on (折磨) his mind," she was reported as saying.

A leading art critic was asked what he thought about the matter. He said he could understand Lady Churchill and had pity on her. Graham Sutherland is a very honest artist, who could only paint what he saw. At the time it was painted, Churchill was an old man, worried by the thought that he would have to end his political career soon. But Lady Churchill shouldn't have had the painting destroyed. It could have been stored away until after their deaths.

In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of a
comet (慧星). When the fragments (碎片) landed in the southern part of the giant planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the Earth. The news has caused panic.

On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth' s atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rashes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities On the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.

Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the Earth, but the north won't escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are mined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs(恐龙)were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn't survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?

Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the author's description of the disaster in 2094?

A.The whole world becomes extremely cold.

B.All the coastal cities in Africa are destroyed.

C.The whole mankind becomes extinct.

D.The visit of the comet results in wars.

听力原文:W: Well, it's sort of attractive, but in the end I still find it a pretty depress
ing place.

M: Do you? Why?

W: The animals are out of their natural environment. They're just here for humans to look at. There's nothing natural about it.

M: Yeah, but if we didn't have any zoos, a lot of species would just, well, they'd face extinction.

W: Do you really believe that?

M: Well, don't you? I mean they have good breeding projects for some species that are dying out. Um, anyway, I think, there's a trend towards developing zoos to become education centers, stimulating information for kids and displays, and that kind of thing.

W: What we need to do is to take care of the natural environment, make sure that they've still got a place where they can live in the wild.

M: Well, yeah, OK. But it's just not happening, is it? I think in reality you've got to have zoos.

W: Well, I just can't agree with that. I mean, what is the pleasure in watching animals pacing up and down in cages?

M: Look, zoos are changing. Some older zoos put animals in cages, but what about safari parks? The animals are fine there. They've got a lot of space and people see them in a much more natural setting.

W: Well, maybe you're right.

A.About the building of the zoo.

B.About the lay-out of the zoo.

C.About the function of the zoo.
