When Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President of the United States in 1932, not only the United S

tates but also the rest of the world was in the throes of an economic depression. Following the termination of World War I, Britain and the United States at first experienced a boom in industry. Called the Roaring Twenties, the 1920s ushered in a number of things - prosperity, greater equality for women in the work world, rising consumption, and easy credit. The outlook for American business was rosy.

October 1929 was a month that had catastrophic economic reverberations worldwide. The American stock market witnessed the "Great Crash", as it is called, and the temporary boom in the American economy came to a standstill. Stock prices sank, and panic spread. The ensuing unemployment figure soared to 12 million by 1932.

Germany in the postwar years suffered from burdensome compensation it was obliged to pay to the Allies. The country's industrial capacity had been greatly diminished by the war. Inflation, political instability, and high unemployment were factors helpful to the growth of the initial Nazi party. Germans had lost confidence in their old leaders and heralded the arrival of a messiah-like figure who would lead them out of their economic wilderness. Hitler promised jobs and, once elected, kept his promise by providing employment in the party, in the newly expanded army, and in munitions factories.

Roosevelt was elected because he promised a "New Deal" to lift the United States out of the doldrums of the depression. Following the principles advocated by Keynes, a British economist, Roosevelt collected the spending capacities of the federal government to provide welfare, work, and agricultural aid to the millions of down-and-out Americans. Elected President for four terms because of his innovative policies, Roosevelt succeeded in dragging the nation out of the depression before the outbreak of World War II.

Benjamin Franklin was Americas first internationally famous swimmer and swimmer teacher.
As a boy Franklin lived in Boston, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. There, during the warm summers he learned to swim. In 1717, at the age of 11, he tried out an early invention, which may well have been the first swim fins (鱼鳍) [such as scuba (自携式水中呼吸器) divers use today]. He made the fins by fitting a kind of web-shaped wooden sandal to the soles of his feet. He soon realized, however, that his swimming kick was linked to the inside of his foot and ankle as well as to the sole. As it turned out, Franklins "flippers" were one of his least successful inventions. Franklin was always interested in getting the fullest enjoyment from life. While flying a kite one day he had another idea. Wanting to amuse himself with the kite and still swim, he lay on his back, held the kites stick in his hands and was carried along the surface of the water. (Although he often swam in Boston Harbor afterwards, Ben never again tried this method of travel. This was a pity, for if he had worn those wooden sandals while being pulled along by the kite, he might have become the worlds first water-skier. ) Franklin continued to be a powerful swimmer, and once, during a long stay in London, he swam more than three miles down the Thames River. Not content with enjoying the sport, he studied manuals on swimming strokes and taught himself to do stunts (绝技、惊险动作) in the water. He even considered opening a swimming school in London, but instead returned to Philadelphia and other pursuits. When he founded the University of Pennsylvania in 1740, he introduced the first compulsory college swim program. Franklins support for swimming may have come from his belief that even ones leisure should be employed usefully. The overweight Franklin considered swimming a reducer of fatty tissue. His accomplishments in this sport were recognized in 1969, when he, along with 14 Olympic swimming champion, was introduced into the newly established "Swimming Hall of Fame" at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A.Franklin, the Famous Swimming Teacher.

B.Franklin, the Great Inventor.

C.Franklin, the Founder of Swimming Schools.

D.Franklin, the Well-known Swimmer.

Many American presidents in the 19th century were born in poor families. They spent their
childhood in little wooden rooms. They got little education. Washington and Lincoln, for example, never went to school and they taught themselves. Lincoln once did jobs of a worker, shopkeeper and postmaster in his early years.

A large number of American presidents had experiences in the army. The two best known were Ulysses Grant and Dwight Eisenhower. Grant was a general in the American Civil War and Eisenhower was a hero in the Second World War. It happened that they graduated from the same school— West Point Military Academy (西点军校). One may be surprised to learn that both of them did not do well in the school. Eisenhower, for example, was once fined because he broke the roles of the school.

The jobs of the US president are tiring. He must keep an eye on anything important which happens both at home and abroad. Every day, a lot of work waits for him to do and he has to make many important decisions. When Franklin Roosevelt was a child, he was once brought to visit President Taft. The old president said to him, "When you grow up you should not be the president. It's a tiring job."

According to the passage, who regarded the jobs of the US president as tiring ones?

A.Grant.

B.Taft.

C.Eisenhower.

D.Roosevelt.
