Subject: Summer work hours

In anticipation of the growing volume of phone call traffic in the busy season, we decided to implement extended work schedule during the months of July and August. As of July 1, work hours will be changed from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Telephone operators should confer with their fellow workers to adjust the work schedule so that one person remains at work after regular work hours to respond to client calls.

Employees can receive one of the three compensations for extended work hours. First, they can choose to be paid for overtime. Second, they can choose to get a special discount on China tour packages. Finally, they can choose to take 48 hours off from work.

Coupons for the Jason Bookstore will not be available starting this summer.

Why was this memo written?

A.To thank employees for their dedication

B.To announce a plan to handle increased business

C.To schedule an upcoming company event

Dear Student Accounts

Hi, I'm Harrison Smith. I'm majoring in Biochemistry. I am writing to let you know that as of Spring 2007, I've been put on academic probation, and as a result it is impossible for me to join any bowling team activities at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Therefore, I want you to erase IAB 50 — "Intercollegiate Athletics, Bowling" from this spring course schedule.

According to the Dean's Office, I will be able to participate in all bowling team activities in the fall, if my grades improve this semester. Thus I eagerly want to request that you continue to award my Bowling Team Scholarship of $1,800 per semester. I will definitely do my best to get good grades. If I can't keep the scholarship, I will have a hard time covering my tuition. Please answer my request as soon as possible. I will enclose the statement of Accounts.

Sincerely,

Harrison Smith

听力原文: The twenty-third Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles and, like every other Olympic Games, they represented a contest of mind, muscle, and athletic determination. The use of high technology, however, showed increasing significance in the staging of the event and helped set an example for staging future events.

Unlike the Olympics of the past, the Olympics are not just a race for gold anymore. They have also become a race for computer technology. Playing the massive event, as any host can tell you, requires a technology plan and organization that brings hundreds of countries together. In the twenty-third Games, for example, computers were used to keep track of schedules, accounts, transportation, and ticketing for more than 43,000 Olympic employees and volunteers. This was not an easy task.

A sophisticated electronic message system, moreover, helped keep the 12,000 or so journalists up-to-date on results. Due to this system, they were able to know about and broadcast to the world the judges' final decisions usually within a minute's time. This message system also allowed traffic controllers to convey traffic reports more efficiently, so that the usually confused Los Angeles highways became easy to navigate. Computers and other high-tech tools were also used to train American athletes by analyzing and evaluating performances. This- computer marvelously assisted the athletes in identifying weaknesses and suggesting ways to improve.

(30)

A.The use of high technology.

B.Being held in a big city in the U. $. A..

C.Earning a lot of money by advertising the goods.

D.Training all the athletes who were to participate in the game by using computers.

Queuing is nothing special in Japan. Every day, television programs show long lines of peo
ple queuing for up to one hour even in front of regular noodle shops, only to finish their food within less than ten minutes.

Why Japanese people queue so often? Do they love it? Probably they do. According to Japanese people, just like an excessively high price can evoke an image of equally high quality, long waiting lines act as an indicator for popularity, reduce availability and increase the subjective value of a good. Thus, for many Japanese customers, waiting lines are probably the most effective advertisement. For example, in an article published in The Japan Times in summer 2007, a Japanese woman confessed that she enjoyed queuing outside shops and restaurants and that she usually joined the line before asking the person in front of her what kind of product was sold. Standing in line also increases and extends anticipation until—yatto! (finally!) —patience is rewarded with the desired product. But when taken to an extreme level, the product one is actually queuing for ceases to be of any importance at all.

There are also some customers who are unable to queue or who are unwilling to wait, thinking it' s a waste of time queuing in a line. What could they do? They can rent a queuer who will stand in line and purchase the desired product for them. Obviously, this service is not free of charge. Some service companies who offer all kinds of unusual service provide rentable " queuers". What' s more, in addition to providing queuers to individuals, the service companies also provide queuers to some shops to increase the image of a hard-to-get product and make customers want to join the line by forming or extending lines. Therefore, waiting lines have become a marketing tool and it would not be surprising to find professional queuers in a line. Some people view it a pure speculation, but they can't deny that it really works and the wage of a few professional queuers to keep the line in shape would be a minor investment compared with what would happen if the queue suddenly disappeared.

However, success is not always guaranteed because the attractiveness of waiting in line can easily backfire if the desired product does not meet expectations.

What is the marketing tool appears in the text?

A.Providing queuers to individuals.

B.Providing queuers to shops.

C.Hiring professional queuers to wait for oneself.

D.Hiring professional queuers to keep a line in shape.

Which machine is your favorite?

People do not always burn the same number of calories on one exercise machine as on another.

A recent study was conducted on the number of calories expended by healthy men and women in their twenties while they exercised on four different machines. The intensity of their exercise was categorized as "fairly light" , "somewhat hard" , or "hard" and showed the following results:

Both men and women burned the most calories on the treadmill and the least on the stationary bicycles.

The stair climber and the rowing machine were in the middle for both men and women.

Whatever the equipment is, that men burned more calories than women did is the physiological fact that pound for pound, men have more muscle than women, and muscles burn more calories than fat does. In addition, it takes more calories to move a larger person and men are usually bigger than women.

Be sure to consult a trainer before starting any of these exercise programs as they involve impact pressure, which is often associated with physical injury.

What is NOT mentioned in the advertisement as a conventional form. of exercise?

A.Basketball

B.Jogging

C.Running

D.Weight lifting
