When word got out that Doug Beardsley was introducing a new course this spring—" Hockey (冰球) Literature and the Canadian Psyche(精神) "—the 40 seats in the class were quickly taken. ESPN offered to fly him to New York for a TV chat show, and e-mail arrived from hockey fans and researchers from as far away as Texas and China.

"They think they can learn something about us as a nation by learning about the game, about Canadian people. They're right. " says Beardsley.

Students in Beardsley's class completed three research papers related to hockey. The reading list included famous works like The Divine Ryans by Wayne Johnston, The Good Body by Bill Gas ton and Les Canadiells by Rick Salutin. They are the kind of books that get at the true meaning of being Canadian.

In Beardsley's words, hockey shows the very nature of the polite Canadian. "I think that a long with this peace-sharing, gentle image comes a need for mayhem(混乱). So we invent the game and—whammo! —you get on the ice and it serves as a way of letting out those energies that we don't allow ourselves elsewhere. " says Beardsley, who added that the reason the game needs to be played in winter is our form. of saying, "Look, even up here in the frozen north we can turn this around and make it work for us. "

"I'm talking about something larger than what happens on the ice and so is the course. "

What is the main purpose of the text?

A.To teach how to play hockey.

B.To introduce an English teacher.

C.To introduce a book by Beardsley.

D.To talk about hockey and the Canadians.

?Read the text below about the phases of innovation in market.

?In most of the lines 41--52 there is one extra word. It is either grammatically incorrect or does not fit in with the meaning of the text. Some lines, however, are correct.

?If a line is correct, write CORRECT on your Answer Sheet.

?If there is an extra word in the line, write the extra word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

New Innovation Needs Three Phases

0 Almost every new innovation goes through three phases. When initially introduced

00 into the market, the process of adoption is slow. The early models are that expensive

41 and hard to use, and perhaps even unsafe. The economic impact is relatively very

42 small. The second phase is the explosive one, because where the innovation is rapidly

43 adopted by a large number of many people. It gets cheaper and easier to use and

44 becomes something familiar with. And then in the third stage, diffusion of the

45 Innovation slows down again, as if it permeates out across the economy. During the

46 explosive phase, the whole new industries spring up to produce the new product or

47 innovation, and up to service it. For example, during the 1920s, there is dramatic

48 acceleration in auto production, from 1.9 million in 1920 to 4.5 million in 1929. This

49 boom was accompanied by all sorts of other essential activities necessary for an the

50 auto-based nation: Roads had to be built for the cars to run on; refineries and oil

51 wells, to provide the gasoline; and garages, to repair them. Historically speaking, the

52 same pattern is repeated again and again and with innovations. The construction of the electrical system required an enormous early investment in generation and distribution capacity.

第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

In no country other than England, it has been said, one can experience four seasons in a single day! Day may break as a nice spring morning, an hour or so later black clouds may have appeared from nowhere and the rain may be pouting down. At midday conditions may be really wintery with the temperature down by about eight degrees or more. And then in the late afternoon the sky will clear, the sun will begin to shine, and for an hour or two before darkness falls, it will be summer.

This uncertainty about the weather has made the English people very careful. The foreigner may laugh when he sees the Englishman leaving home on a beautiful sunny morning wearing a raincoat or carrying an umbrella, but he may well regret his laughter later in a day !

From the text, we can know______.

A.England is the only country to have this kind of weather

B.no country in the world has this kind of weather

C.the world's weather is better than England's

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the three major Chinese traditional festivals, along with Spring Festival and the Moon Festival. Of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period. As the term suggests, dragon-boat is a boat caved like a dragon. The origin of the dragon-boat race is related to Quyuan , a senior official of Chu in the period of the Warring States. He hated the crafty sycophants in the important positions. At last, he was squeezed out by them and exiled. He threw himself into a river on the fifth of the fifth lunar month in 278 BC. The local people organized spontaneously to rescue him by rowing boat. However, the rescue ended in vain. This common practice developed into the dragon-boat sports to memorize Quyuan .

The dragon-boat race has become a custom since Tang Dynasty. To win the race, the following must be concerned about:

1. High quality wood. Heavy wood will affect the speed, so it is usually made of light wood.

2. Players with energy, endurance and rowing skills. The method to choose excellent oarsmen is interesting. Two contestants sit in the same boat back to back. They both row to the directions they are facing, and the one whose direction the boat moves to is the winner. He will be chosen as the player.

3. Excellent dispatch. Since there are scores or even a hundred oarsmen on a boat, they can not win the game until they are in the same step. A strong man beat a drum in the center of the boat, and the oarsmen unity the rhythm accordingly, which helps them to be in step to win the game.

Last but not least, an excellent coxswain is very important. The boat moves forward like a lightning once it sets off. It is not easy to adjust if it moves off the right direction. ":

Nowadays, dragon-boat race has been a world competitive game. The first world dragon boat championship was held in China in 1995. Every spring there are nearly 60 dragon boat races are held outside China in cities from Vancouver to Sydney, from Gdanisk, Poland to Cape Town, South Africa. Canada alone has nearly 50 dragon boat teams and Germany has nearly 30. It is influencing the world with its special power.

41. Which of the following statements would the author be likely to agree?

[A] The heavier the wood is, the better the boat is.

[B] The stronger players are more likely to be chosen in the dragon boat race.

[C] Good oarsmen can drive the boat in perfect direction.

[D] The final result of the race is dependant on three conditions.

?Read this text taken from an article about Marketing Communications.

?Choose the best sentence to fill each of the gaps.

?For each gap 9—14, mark one letter (A—H) on your Answer Sheet.

?Do not use any letter more than once.

Many management writers have discussed the idea of satisfying customers’ needs and wants. H Despite the vast amount of information available on customers, finding out exactly what they require is a challenge that certain companies, such as Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer, have found extraordinarily difficult to meet. (9) . In a report written by the research company Business Intelligence,50% of companies felt that their marketing communications were ineffective and 85 % said that any attempt to gain customer loyalty failed.

The two extremes of marketing can be summarized by looking at the difference between the East and the West. (10) . Biros, socks, Light bulbs—if it can be made and distributed then there is a market. In the prosperous West, it is the other extreme. Such is the attraction of profit that the marketing specialists are competing with some incredibly sophisticated advertising for some rather simple products! (11) . The Internet is also adding another dimension to the marketing process as is the growing resistance to subtle, clever advertising, which seems to have lost its edge in the marketplace.

Out of this turmoil there has evolved another definition of marketing known as customer relationship marketing(CRM). Customers are much less loyal than they used to be and can afford to chop and change. (12) .

Microsoft did this by reorganizing the business around the customer, splitting itself into four new divisions which focus on the customer. (13) . The call centers are likely to form. the basis of the future of marketing, although there is little evidence that they will work. (14) .

A The choice is seemingly endless, with a typical superstore stocking between 20,000 and 25,000 different lines totaling between two and four million products per store.

B In the spring of 1999,both companies announced heavy falls in profit largely due to their inability to listen to and respond to the customer.

C Consumers also dislike the synthesized voice which asks you to press certain numbers on the keypad, depending on the service required.

D Although there will always be a place and function for marketing, it is unclear whether the traditional product or brand manager will still have a job in the twenty-first century, having been replaced by customer relations managers on the end of a telephone.

E In Russia, if there is a queue, you are advised to join as it means a manufacturer has actually produced something, regardless of whether there is a specific need.

F Some companies now have customer call centers which are set up with the sole objective of handling complaint, Inquiries and after sales service.

G It is estimated that winning over a new customer can cost up to five times as much as keeping a customer, so a new definition of marketing has evolved which is identifying, attracting and retaining the most valuable customers to sustain profitable growth.

H Although the two are different, companies spend billions of pounds on market research with a view to targeting the potential customer in a more precise way.
