Most English people have three names: a first name, a middle name and the family name. The
ir family name comes last. For example, my full name is Jim Allan Green. Green is my family name. My parents gave me both of my other names.

People don't use their middle names very muck So "John Henry Brown" is usually called “John Brown". People never use Mr., Mrs. or Miss before their first names. So you can say John Brown, or Mr. Brown; but you should never say Mr. John. They use Mr., Mrs. or Miss with the family name but never with the first name.

Sometimes people ask me about my name. “When you were born, why did your parents call you Jim?" they ask, “Why did they choose that name?" The answer is they didn't call me Jim. They called me James. James was the name of my grandfather. In England, people usually call me Jim for short. That's because it is shorter and easier than James.

Most English people have three names.

A.True.

B.False.

"Wash every day and you'll die young, my son!" People often said those words; long ago, of
course. Napoleon's wife had new clothes every month, instead of a bath. ("It's quicker," She always said). Rich people did not often have a bath. They washed their hands and faces, but not their bodies. Many poor people did not wash at all. A young man once said to a doctor; "Soap and water have never touched my body." (And the doctor answered. "That's true. I know... ")

why didn't people wash in those days long ago?

Well, they did not have water in their house. They carried water from rivers or from holes in the ground (= wells). Towns people bought it from a water--carrier. Sometimes it was expensive; and soap was always expensive. They drank water, of course; and so they were clean inside. They did not think about the outside! And this is true; they just did not like a bath.

Modern life is different. We use a lot of soap and water. And we are all quite clean. However, a few people use too much soap; and they often get ill. Who are these people?

Many young women work as hairdressers. They wash and then "dress" other women's hair. That is their job, and they like it. Young hairdressers sometimes wash dirty heads on a busy day! Their hands are soapy for seven or eight hours; and that is not a good thing. A young hairdresser's hands are often red and ugly; and she must then go to doctor.

Long ago, people ______.

A.often died young

B.did not often have a bath

C.washed every day

D.washed every day and died young

听力原文:M: One of the most common questions we ask about people's behavior. is why. Why d
id she say this? Why did he do that? Sometimes the reason is obvious, for example, someone is driving down the street, the light turns red, and they stop, why?

W: Because they have to, legally I mean.

M: Exactly! In this case the reason is obvious, so usually we don't question it. But when the reason is not so obvious and especially when the behavior. could have negative consequences, we'll more likely to feel a need to explain the causes of the behavior. Social psychologists have a term for this, for the process of explaining the causes of the behavior, it's called "causal attribution". And one theory suggests, there's a pattern in the way we go about attributing causes to people's behavior. According to this theory, there are two categories of reasons: internal factors and external factors. Again, Lisa, say you're driving down the road and all of a sudden some guy turns into the lane right in front of you, and you have to slam on your brakes to avoid an accident. How do you react?

W: I'll probably get very angry.

M: Because...

W: Well, he's not paying attention, he's a bad driver.

M: So you automatically attribute, the driver's behavior. to an internal factor. He himself is to blame because he is careless.

W: So if I said it was because of heavy traffic or something, I'd be attributing his behavior. to an external factor, something beyond his control.

M: Good. Now how do we usually explain our own negative behavior?

W: We blame external factors.

M: That's right.

(23)

A.Common causes of anger.

B.Judging people's behavior.

C.Changing people's attitudes.

D.The effects of negative behavior.

听力原文:M:You have lived here a considerable time. Did you not say sixteen years?

W:Eighteen, sir,I came, when I was twenty,to wait on the mistress till she died at forty-eight,the master retained me for his housekeeper.

M:Indeed.

W:Ah,times are greatly Changed Since then!

M:Yes,you’ve seen a good many alterations,I suppose?

W:I have,and troubles too.

M:Why the landlord let Thrushcross Grange, and preferred living in a situation and residence so much inferior. Is he not rich enough to keep the estate in good order?

W: Rich, sir! He has, nobody knows what money, and every year it increases.Yes,yes,he’s rich enough to

live in a finer house than this: but he's very near -- close-handed; and, if he had meant to flit to Thrushcross Grange, as soon as he heard of a good tenant he could not have borne to miss the chance of getting a few hundreds more. It is strange people should be so greedy, when they are alone in the world!

M: He had a son, it seems?

W: Yes, he had one -- he is dead.

M: And, that young lady is his widow?

W: Yes.

M: Where did she come from originally?

W: Why, sir, she is my late master's daughter: Catherine Clinton was her maiden name. I nursed her, poor thing! I did wish her family would remove here, and then we might have been together again.

How old is the housekeeper now?

A.Eighteen.

B.Twenty-eight.

C.Thirty-eight.

D.Forty-eight.
