I explained the situation to the conductor who advised me to get off before Union Station and take a taxi. When the time came, he even helped me with my language. He wished mea good luck as I jumped off, and a few minutes later I was going towards the Union Station in a taxi. It was almost 7:50 when we stopped outside the station, I paid the driver quickly, carried my bags and hurried inside.

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have three-day passes posted.l was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see be- yond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors, and ornaments(装饰物) shining against the green of a pine. "Where did it come from?" I asked.
"I asked the Gates boy to cut it," my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when called-oh, such a rush ! He just brought it in this afternoon... " The pine reached to the
proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Krystal Star was in its place. A few green
branches reached about a little awkwardly(不够美观地) at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas. "It's not like the ones you used to find," my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape,l suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look. But I couldn't be fussy(挑剔的) . "
"Don't worry," I told her. "It's perfect. " It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized
something for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.

Who Came First, the Chicken or the Egg{Page}
I just mailed the chicken and the egg, each in its own separate packaging, and kept careful track of when each shipment was sent from a post office in Cambridge.
Massachusetts, and when it later arrived at its intended destination in New York City.
In mailing the chicken, I was careful to adhere to the restrictions described in the American Postal Service's Domestic Mail Manual 57, as updated on April 3, 2003. This, the most recent version of the Manual states that: "Adult chickens must be sent by Express Mail. The containers used must pass the standards in International Safe Transit Association Test Procedure IA; be strong enough to endure normal handling; and ensure enough air for the chickens in transit... The number of birds must not be more than the container's limit."
I mailed the chicken in a wooden box got from a colleague who does research with birds.
Then, I mailed the egg in standard packaging obtained through an industrial su pplier. It's quite simple.
I posted both the chicken and the egg at 9:40 am, on a Monday morning, from the Harvard Square post office, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The staff there told me that this was the first chicken anyone had mailed from there in recent memory, and perhaps ever. They handled both the chicken and the egg skillfully and politely.
The intended destination for both packages was the James A. Farley General Post Office, which is located in Manhattan right next to the Penn Station train terminal. I took the subway from the Harvard Square to the Boston train station, and from there boarded a train to New York City, a distance of about 320 kilometers, arriving that afternoon at Penn Station. I immediately went to the post office, to await the arrivals of the chicken and the egg.The James A. Farley General Post Office is open 24 hours a day, so I was able to wait there until both items arrived. I inquired once per hour for both the chicken and the egg.
That day, Monday, neither the chicken nor the egg arrived. The next day, Tuesday, neither the chicken nor the egg arrived.
The chicken arrived at 10:31 am, Wednesday. The staff at the post office told me that this was the first chicken anyone had mailed to the post office in recent memory, and perhaps ever. The egg arrived that same day, at 9:37pm, 11 hours after the chicken.
Based on experiment data, it's now quite clear that the chicken came first, the egg second.

听力原文: When someone says, "Well, I guess I'll have to go and face the music", it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. [32] It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced. The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from? [33] The first information came from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said--in 1851--that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, "It's time to go to face the music". And that is exactly what they did--face the orchestra which was just below the stage.
[34] An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, "to face the music" came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you had no choice. The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection by their leader. [35]The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean and shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?
(7)
A.Your boss's order.
B.Your leader's inspection.
C.Something unpleasant to be experienced.
D.Sour pop music.
听力原文: To find out how the name Canada came about we must go back to the 16th century. At that time the French dreamed of discovering and controlling more land, of expanding trade beyond their borders and of spreading their faith across the world. In 1535, Francois I, King of France, ordered a navigator named Jacques Cartier to explore the New World and search for a passage to India.
Cartier first arrived at the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, which he wanted to explore. He did not know what to expect but he hoped that this Gulf was just an arm of the ocean between two islands, if it was, be would soon be on his way to the Far East. So he sailed upstream along the St. Lawrence River. However, instead of reaching Asia he arrived at Quebec or Stadacona, as the Indians called it. It was at this point that the term "Canada" entered the country's history. Apparently the word "Canada" came from an Indian word Kanata, which means community or village. Cartier first used it when he referred to Stadacona or Quebec. What a huge village Canada is!
(33)
A.To build a new country.
B.To explore the New World.
C.To get in touch with the American Indians.
D.To know more about France.
W: [22] I wrote my first finished story when I was about six. It was about a small animal, rabbit, I mean. And I've been writing ever since.
M: Why did you choose to be an author?
W: [23] If someone asked me how to achieve happiness, step one would be finding out what you love doing most and step two would be finding someone to pay you to do it. I consider myself very lucky indeed to be able to support myself by writing.
M: Do you have any plans to write books for adults?
W: My first two novels were for adults. I suppose I might write another one. But I never really imagine a target audience when I'm writing. [24] The ideas come first. So it really depends on the idea that grabs me next.
M: Where did the ideas for the Harry Potter books come from?
W: [25] I've no idea where the ideas came from. And I hope I'll never find out. It would spoil my excitement if it turned out I just have a funny little wrinkle on the surface of my brain, which makes me think about invisible train platforms.
M: How do you come up with the names of your characters?
W: I invented some of them, but I also collect strange names. I've gotten them from ancient saints, maps, dictionaries, plants, war memorials and people I've met.
M: Oh, you are really resourceful.
(23)
A.It was about a little animal.
B.It took her six years to write.
C.It was adapted from a fairy tale.
