Text 3

Samuel H. Preston, a sociologist at the Universjty of Pennsylvania, studied how the American family is changing. He reported that by the time the average American couple reaches 40 years of age, they have more parents than children. This finding shows the change in lifestyles (生活方式) and duties of aging Americans. The average middle-aged couple can look forward to caring for eld- erly parents some time after their own children have grown up.

Because Americans are living longer than ever, more researchers and social workers have be- gun to study care giving to improve care of the elderly. When people care for an elderly relative, they often do not use community (社区) services, such as adult (成人) daycare centres. If the care givers are adult children, they are more'likely to use such services, especially because they of- ten have jobs and other business. However, the wife of an elderly person is much less likely to use support services or to put the dependent person in a nursing home. Social workers discovered that the reason for this difference was fear of becoming poor. An ill elderly person may live for years, and medical care and nursing homes are very expensive. An elderly couple's savings can disappear very quickly. The other half, usually the wife, can be left in poor living conditions. As a result, she often tries to take care of her husband herself for as long as she can.

64. An example of changes in American lifestyles is that

[A] they prefer to have more children

[B] the elderly like living with their children

[C] the middle-aged couples have different caregiving duties

[D] the average age for American couples to have children is 40

听力原文: Richard Arkwright was born on December 23, 1732, in Preston, Lancashire, to a poor family. He was taught to read and write by his cousin, and later became apprenticed to a barber. Arkwright was an ambitious man, however, and soon struck out on his own. He started a wig-making business, in the course of which he travelled widely in Great Britain, collecting hair for his wigs. On his travels he met John Kay, who had invented a new spinning machine for the burgeoning textile industry. Arkwright was so impressed by Kay's machine that he hired the man to build it for him. The new Spinning Frame. produced a thread far stronger than any- thing available at that time, and it was able to spin 128 threads at one time. Equally important, from Arkwright's point of view, the machine did not require a skilled operator to run it. Unfortunately, the size of the Spinning Frame. made hand-operation impossible. Arkwright tried using horsepower, but finally settled on using a waterwheel to power the machine. In 1771 he and his business partners Jedediah Strutt and Samuel Need established a factory on the banks of the River Derwent in Cromford, Derbyshire. Arkwright was the first to successfully create a system of mass-production. His factories and his methods were widely copied throughout Eng- land and around the world.

What was Richard Arkwright well known as?

A.A barber.

B.The founder of mass-production.

C.A traveller.

D.A skilled operator.

听力原文:M: New Land Conference Information Center. David Cruise speaking.

F: Good morning. I'm Mary Keller from Preston Training Center. I am ringing to get some information about conference facilities. We are going to hold a conference in a couple of weeks. It's an international conference and there will be 300 people involved. What we need now is one large conference room which can hold about 400 people and four small ones for group discussion. We would also like to have accommodation provided.

M: Yes, I see. Apart from size, what else are you looking for?

F: Well, the hotel must be close to the city, because some participants may want to tour around the town in the evening.

M: Then I think Crystal Hotel is a better choice. It has a very big conference room and is close to the city. Actually, it provides access by road.

F: It sounds pretty good. How much is the cost?

M: It's $250 for a large conference room and $100 for a small one. Of course, it is calculated by day.

F: Well, it's too expensive for us. You know, the conference will last for 4 days. That will cost too much. Can you provide some cheaper hotels?

M: Yes, how about Capitol Square Hotel and Hotel International? Both of them have large conference rooms but Hotel International is a bit fax from the city.

F: What's the price for Capitol Square then?

M: The hotel has a 40% discount. So it's about $150 for a large room.

F: OK, I think this is a better choice. Do I have to pay a deposit?

M: yes, $100 for that. Can I have your name, please?

F: Keller from Preston Training Center. I'll send you a check tomorrow.

听力原文: The time is four o'clock.

There has been a serious accident on the M6 motorway in Lancashire, in which at least six people have lost their lives. It happened early this morning near Preston when a coach carrying 45 passengers collided with a heavy lorry. Rescue operations have been going on throughout the day, and a section of the motorway has been closed to traffic.

Important talks have been taking place at 10 Downing Street today between leaders. The Prime Minister and Trade Union leaders have agreed to work together to find ways of combating level of unemployment in British industry.

Meanwhile, the Government has failed to avert a national bus strike, and the bus drivers' union has announced that no buses will run from text Monday. The decision to go ahead with strike was announced by a union spokesman at the end of a meeting earlier this afternoon during which Government representatives failed to persuade the union and the employers to agree on a new wage plan.

An antifreeze is a liquid that is added to water to keep it from freezing. When water free
zes and becomes into ice, it expands. The force of water of expanding is so great that it can break the hardest metal. Water is used in car engines to keep them cool while they run, and if this water is allowed to freeze in winter it can break the iron block of the engine. That is why antifreezes are necessary.

Water freeze at zero centigrade; the usual kind of antifreeze will not freeze until the temperature is 40℃ below zero. A mixture of five parts of water and four parts of antifreezes will prevent freezing at 18℃ below zero; four parts of water and five parts of antifreeze reduce this to 22℃ below zero.

Alcohol is a good antifreeze, but when the car is running it turns hot and the alcohol bums away, so it must be replaced very often. Most persons use antifreezes that do not boil away when the engine is running. There are many chemicals that do this. One of the most popular is called ethylene glycol, which is sold under various trade names such as Preston and Xerox.

The text is written_________.

A.to help to sell antifreezes

B.to explain what antifreezes are

C.to compare ethylene glycol with alcohol

D.to tell what kind of antifreeze to choose
