E

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict," he jokes. "I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled." Today David wears casual clothes and a sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. "I'm working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable."

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-down Friday" or "casual Friday"."What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an ev- eryday thing." said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. "A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it' s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale (士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money."Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day," one person said. "For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."

David Smith refers to himself as having been "a clothes addict", because______.

[A] he often wore casual clothes and a sports shirt

[B] he couldn't stand a clean appearance

[C] he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time

[D] he didn't want to spend much money on clothes

听力原文:David Smith and his wife went to the Isle of Wight for their summer holiday. But
they were by no means pleased with their hotel. As soon as they returned home, David decided to write to the manager of the travel agency.

David: Can you spare a moment, dear? I want you to listen to this letter.

Sally: Go ahead, then.

David: Dear Sir, my wife and I arrived home last night after a holiday arranged by your firm, in

Jersey. We stayed at the hotel described in your brochure as a comfortable, medium-sized hotel, with a magnificent view of the sea, offering courteous, old fashioned service and excellent food, served in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Sally: Yes, that's what the brochure said.

David: In fact the hotel is situated at least half a mile from the sea. Our room overlooked a car park...

Sally: Through the gates of which motor vehicles were constantly arriving or departing.

David: Yes, that's good. The food was strictly beef-burgers and chips or fish and chips. Wine was available, but at exorbitant prices, and as for the courteous, old-fashioned service, the majority of the staff were foreign and virtually incapable of speaking or understanding the English language.

Sally: Yes, that's quite true.

David: In addition to this, we were most unhappy with the arrangements for our journey home. We were instructed to catch the 11:00 am ferry...

Sally: Wasn't it 12:00?

David: No, 11:00... but this was apparently delayed and we did not get away till 6 o'clock in the evening. Now that our holiday is over, it seems fairly pointless writing this letter, but I should like you to know that we were most disappointed with the hotel and travel arrangements and shall certainly not be booking any futurc holidays through yours. Yours faithfully, David Smith.

Sally: Yes dear, that' s a very good letter.

What did Mr. Smith decide to do when they returned home?

A.He decided to go to the travel agency for complaints.

B.He wrote to the manager of the agency.

C.He'd like to consult with his wife for complaints.

D.He did nothing but complain with his wife.

"Vern in the Hills" 50th Anniversary Celebration, Bradley, MO

"Vern in the Hills" is celebrating its 50th year in production. A light-hearted production staged by the City Theater in Bradley, MO, "Vern in the Hills" has been performed at the Thompson Outdoor Theater each summer since it first opened on May 28, 1956. Few theaters in such small cities are able to sustain a production over a course of so many years.

"Somehow we've become a classic, and part of the fabric of the community," says artistic director David Frey, "going to 'Vern in the Hills' on a summer evening is just part of life here." Mr. Frey is only the third director the production has seen in its fifty-year history. A fact that, Mr. Frey says contributes to the play's success.

"Vern in the Hills" does seem to be part of the fabric of the community. We loved the production. We observed several families with three generations having picnics and watching the play. It was clear that most people had seen it before. If you ever have the chance to see "Vern in the Hills," you will quickly understand how it became a classic.

Where is "The New Dream" playing?

A.Peterson, KY

B.Saratoga, NY

C.Landsdale, CA

D.Los Angeles, CA

Choose your company with care

Small is beautiful. That, at least, is the conclusion of new research examining how satisfied secretaries are in different sized firms. 'We have found that people who work for small or medium-sized companies work harder and are more committed,' says David Smith, author of one of the latest studies in this field. 'The smaller the environment, the bigger the part you play as an individual, and the more people notice your absence.' This will come as a surprise to many secretaries. Some recruitment agencies said that secretaries are keen to get positions in the bigger companies. However, smaller companies can be more flexible when it comes to working hours, and have better working conditions. But working for a smaller firm is not without its disadvantages. Career development in the form. of courses can be limited, but, on the other hand, employees often feel that they can learn more on the job. In fact, opportunities for promotion are the same whatever the size of the company. Smith also says: 'Our research shows that in a company of fewer than 50 people, employers can actually see what their employees are producing and then give them bonuses as appropriate.'

The new research focuses on the number of secretaries employed in small firms.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Doesn't say
