听力原文： Windbreaks are barriers formed by trees and other plants. Farmers plant these barriers around their fields to protect their land.
Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away (33) . They also keep the wind from destroying or damaging crops. They are very important for protecting grain crops.
There have been studies done on windbreaks in parts of West Africa, for example. These found that grain harvests can be twenty percent higher in fields protected by windbreaks compared to fields without such protection (33) .
But windbreaks seem to work best when they allow some winds to pass through them (341. If the wall of trees and plants blocks the wind completely, then violent air motions will take place close to the ground. These motions will lift soil into the air where it will be blown away.
There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. one line should be large treas. The second line, right next to it, can be shorter trees and other plants with leaves. Locally grown trees and plants are best for windbreaks.
If the quality of the land is not very good, studies have shown that one kind of tree that can grow well is the white pine (35) .
Windbreaks not only protect land and crops from the wind. Surplus trees can be cut down and used to provide wood (33) .

Insect pests die if they freeze, but many have the ability to become "supercool", remaining alive even when the temperature drops to - 10℃. However, Paul Fields of the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Winnipeg has discovered that the ability of these insects to supercool can be seriously affected by "ice-nucleating-active bacteria". When the bacteria are present, the insects freeze and die at a higher temperature than normal.
Ice-nucleating-active bacteria are found naturally on most plant leaves. They are also grown commercially for use in cloud seeding and in making artificial snow.
Fields added these bacteria to wheat which was stored at a temperature of - 10℃ and contained the rusty grain beetle. He found that when the bacteria accounted for only 10 parts per million of the grain, the beetles' supercooling point rose from - 11.3℃ to - 7.1℃, so more died. At concentrations of 100 ppm or 1000 ppm, the bacteria increased the supercooling point to as high as -6.3℃, which resulted in more than 75 percent of the beetles dying.
Fields also applied the bacteria to two other species of grain beetle, Sitophilus granarius and Oryzaephilus surinamensis, keeping them at - 10℃. He found that more of these beetles also died. First, though, he gradually acclimatized some of the insects to cold, to simulate the increase in tolerance to cold which they normally develop as winter approaches. Fields found that the insects that had been acclimatized were less affected by cold than the beetles that had not been acclimatized, but that more of them still died at - 10℃.
Fields says that the technique of using ice-nucleating-active bacteria leaves no noxious chemical residues and poses little risk to the people who apply the treatment. It is also effective against insects which have become resistant to pesticides.

The first thing to do in seeking a position is to determine exactly what you want to do -- not in terms of some vague, ethereal (轻飘的) objective, such as "I, want to become a member of the management group," but with a definite and immediate goal. Through everyone's experience there must run a thread of consistency, a pattern of what the individual has enjoyed doing and hence has done well. Though actual jobs may have been held in different fields of endeavor, each one of us should be able to pick out the type of work he can do best.
Many men I have interviewed have come to me and said: "I am a financial man. Any sport you have in the treasurer's or controller's line, I'd like." or "I'm good with people. I can sell anything. If you hear of a sales manager's opening or public relations spot, I'd be a natural".
These men are confused. They have not thought through the problems and responsibilities of the fields they say they are qualified for. It is also apparent to the interviewer that they are thinking of themselves rather than of the contribution they can make to the future employer.
This does not imply that one man is not capable of filling several different kinds of positions. A man's aptitude or his past training may fit him for a number of job, but he should know enough not to confuse sales management with public relations or a treasurer's duties with those of a controller. (Personally I believe many companies set such rigid specifications .in looking for a man that they overlook worthwhile candidates.) But after all, if an individual cannot decide for himself what he can do best, how can he expect anyone else to do it for him？
