U.S. Eats Too Much Salt

People in the United States consume more than twice the recommended amount of salt, raising their risk for high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes, government health experts said on Thursday.

They found nearly 70 percent of U. S. adults are in high-risk groups that would benefit from a lower-salt diet of no more than 1,500 mg per day, yet most consume closer to 3,500 mg per day.

"It's important for people to eat less salt. People who adopt a heart-healthy eating pattern that includes a diet low in sodium (钠) and rich in potassium (钾) and calcium (钙) can improve their blood pressure," Dr. Darwin Labarthe of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a statement.

"People need to know their recommended daily sodium limit and take action to reduce sodium intake (摄入量) ," Labarthe said.

The study in the CDC's weekly report on death and disease used national survey data to show that two out of three adults should be consuming no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day because they are black or over the age of 40 -- which are considered high-risk groups.

Yet studies show most people in the United States eat 3,436 mg of sodium per day, according to a 2005-2006 CDC estimate.

Most of the sodium eaten comes from packaged, processed and restaurant foods. The CDC said it will join other agencies in the Health and Human Services Department in working with major food manufacturers and chain restaurants to reduce sodium levels in the food supply.

Nationwide, 16 million men and women have heart disease and 5.8 million are estimated to have had a stroke. Cutting salt consumption can reduce these risks, the CDC said.

Eating too much salt raises a person's risk for______.

A.strokes.

B.heart attacks.

C.high blood pressure.

D.all of the above.

Will it matter if you don' t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United
States. Those tests included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class. Contrary to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

The results of the test show that______.

A.breakfast has great effect on work and studies

B.breakfast has much to do with people's health

C.a person will work better if he has simple breakfast

D.breakfast only affects those who work with their brains

Conversation Two

W: I'm so worried about Mark these days. Ever since he moved into his apartment, he has been losing weight. He really doesn't look well at all.

M: He should try to gain some weight. He is probably not eating enough.

W: Well, anyway, how is Tim these days?

M: Tim? Oh, Tim has been worried, too. He is really getting much too fat. He needs to lose about 75 pounds now.

W: That's a lot of weight to lose. What does Tim eat?

M: I really don't know. But I am sure he is eating too much cake and candy.

W: Well, did I tell you Mark doesn't eat any meat now? He only eats vegetables and fruit.

M : That's probably why he is so thin. Does he smoke?

W: Does he smoke? About two packs of cigarettes a day. That's my son, a smoking vegetarian.

M: En, if he stops smoking, he would gain weight. I know he would. Tim put on a lot of weight when he stopped smoking.

W : Does Tim play any sports?

M: Play sports? Oh, my! I keep telling him, "Tim, dear, you really need to get some exercise." And you know what he does? He just gets angry.

W: I know Mark doesn't take exercise, either.

M: Did you tell him?

W: Of course, but you know what it is like being a mother of a 13-year-old boy. They just don't think they need your advice anymore. I wish Mark could find a nice girlfriend to relax and have fun with. I heard Tim has a girlfriend at last. That's wonderful.

When did Mark start losing weight according to the woman?

A.Since he found a girlfriend.

B.Since he took to heavy smoking

C.Since he began to exercise regularly.

D.Since he started to live on his own.

The Dollar in World Markets

According to a leading German banker, the U.S.dollar is "the most frequently discussed economic phenomenon of our times". He adds, "... the dollar's exchange rate is at present the most important price in the world economy... " Because the dollar acts as a world currency, its value affects many nations,The central banks of many countries hold huge reserves of dollars, and over half of all world trade is priced in terms of dollars. Any shift in the dollar's exchange rate will benefit some and hurt others. Some people suggest, therefore, (8)

The dollar's exchange rate has been volatile and unpredictable. Several years ago, the dollar was rapidly declining in value. This made it (9) The rise in the price of foreign goods made it possible for U.S.businesses to raise the price of competing goods produced here, thus worsening inflation. Foreigners who dealt in dollars or who held dollars as reserves were hurt. People in the United States who had borrowed foreign currencies found that they had to pay back more than they borrowed (10) The United States lost face in the eyes of the rest of the world.

The dollar went soaring upward, and the situation was reversed. The United States exporters found it hard to sell abroad because foreigners would have to pay more for U.S.dollars. People in the United States now bought the relatively cheaper foreign goods, and U.S.manufacturers complained that they could not compete. Job losses were often blamed on the "overvalued" dollar. Poor nations (11) found it difficult to repay both the loans and the interest because they had to use more and more of their own currencies to obtain dollars. The solution to this problem is to end the system of floating exchange rates and return to fixed rates. We might even return to the gold standard.

Fixed exchange rates didn't work in the past. currency values should be determined by market conditions. A drop in the exchange value of a nation's currency means that (12) that it is too inefficient to compete in the world markets, that it is permitting a high rate of inflation which makes its goods too expensive, that it is going too deeply in debt, or that others have lost confidence in the nation's stability. A nation should bring its exchange rate back up by addressing these problems, not by interfering with the money market.

A.that had borrowed dollars

B.that the dollar's value should be more tightly controlled

C.because the declining dollar would buy fewer units of the foreign money

D.its value affects many nations

E.difficult for Americans to purchase foreign goods and services

F.that have a lot of U.S. dollars

G.all nations want to import less and export more

H.it is importing too much
