Passage So she vanquished them, horse and foot, just as she had vanquished their fathers
thirty years before about the smell. That was two years after her father s death and a short time after her sweetheart—the one we believed would marry her—had deserted her. After her father s death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all. A few of the ladies had the temerity to call, taut were not received, and the only sign of life about the place was the Negro man—a young man then—going in and out with a market basket. Questions:

What is the title of this work?

第4题
Mrs. Grey lived in the country, but she worked in London. She drove to the railway station
in her car every morning, and left it in the station car park until she arrived back on the train in the evening. She was a careful driver, but one morning she was rather late, so she was going faster than usual when she had an accident in a narrow road not far from her home.

What happened was that another car was coming in the opposite direction, and either that one or Mrs. Grey's car was too far in the middle of the road, or perhaps both of them were. They ran into each other and were both damaged, although not enough to stop them from driving.

Both Mrs. Grey and the other driver, who was a young man whom she had seen in the district but had not met, got out of their cars, and Mrs. Grey said, "I'm afraid I haven't got time to waste on an accident this morning, as I have a very important appointment in town at nine, and I suppose you're a busy man too." .

"Yes, I am," the young man said, "but we'll have to c. all the police for insurance purposes, won't we? They won't pay for the damage unless we have reported the accident to the police and they have come and seen what happened."

"Yes, certainly," Mrs. Grey answered, "but I have something to suggest. We won't be committing a crime if we go away now in our cars, and then come back to the scene of the accident, say, at six this evening, and put them in exactly the same positions as they are in now. Then we can call the police. They won't know what time the accident happened, and the insurance companies won't care either as long as we can send them a police report of the accident. " " What a good idea !" the young man said happily. "So I'll be waiting here at six o'clock this evening. I won't be late!" "Nor will I," Mrs. Grey answered. She and the young man exchanged visiting cards, and then each drove off to their work.

When Mrs. Grey arrived at the station from London at a quarter to six that evening, she got into her car, drove to the place where the accident had happened, and found the young man waiting there in his car. They put both cars in exactly the same positions as they had been in after the accident, and then Mrs. Grey called the police, using the telephone in her car, as if the accident had just happened.

The most suitable title for this passage is______.

A.A Late Car Accident

B.A Funny Car Accident

C.A Bad Car Accident

D.A Lucky Car Accident

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a
young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!" But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are small. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chance of work with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.

Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and tedious training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the chauffeur to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took t he producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her elocution lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!

1).Why is an assistant stage manager's job difficult?()

A、Because he has to do everything.

B、Because he has to work long hours every day.

C、Because he will not be happy.

D、Because he has to wait for another chance.

2).Usually only students who ()are accepted.

A、have received good education

B、are hard-working

C、are talented and promising

D、are good-mannered

3).The reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is that ().

A、actors are very determined people

B、the course at the drama school lasts two years

C、acting is very hard work

D、there are already too many actors

4)."Then she got angry and said she would call the police". This sentence shows that ().

A、She totally disbelieved the proposal

B、The man acted with an ill purpose

C、The man forced her into his big car

D、She was a nervous woman

5).The phrase "once in a blue moon" refers to().

A、once in a full moon

B、once for a while

C、once for a long time

D、once and for all

ckets this Saturday?

W: It's here. I'm waiting and so are all these people in front of me.

M: I want to buy tickets, too, but I don't have much time. Have you been waiting long?

W: I've been here about one hour and so far I've moved a total of five feet in that time.

M: You're kidding!

W: I'm not. There was a young man waiting in front of me who got so frustrated that he finally gave up and got out of here. He said that he had been in line for over two hours.

M: Great. It shouldn't be taking so long. Do you know what's causing all of this?

W: I have no idea. Maybe they don't have enough people here to sell the tickets. I just hope that the concert hasn't been canceled.

M: I just hope there are still tickets by the time I get up to the counter.

W: It would be so annoying if that happened.

M: I wish I came here before lunch instead of now. I thought I had enough time to eat first. Has it been like this all day?

W: Apparently so. I originally wanted to call and do all of this over the phone, but they said they weren't taking phone orders.

M: There are three more hours until the ticket booth closes; I guess I better stay. Tickets to a good concert are worth the wait.
