听力原文: Recently, over 30 million Americans of both sexes and all ages have shown great interest in walking. They have a strong desire to keep fit. By nature, Americans are enthusiastic and energetic about hobbies or pastimes. As a result, there are walkers' clubs to join in and many books and magazines to read about walking.

Walking is probably the most overlooked way to physical fitness. Like other exercises, it can help control weight, strengthen the heart and lungs, ease stress and build up energy. Unlike many exercises, walking is simple, easy and cheap.

Middle-aged men suffer from heart disease, the nation's number one killer. Thus, they are strongly interested in walking. In fact, many doctors encourage their patients to become more physically active. It is interesting to note that the rate of heart disease began to decrease between 1992 and 1994 and it is still decreasing.

Remember that it is possible to overdo anything, even walking. Many confused walkers overdo and finally suffer from ankle and foot damage. Be careful not to overexert yourself, especially in hot weather.

29. Who likes the physical exercise of walking in the United States?

30.Why are Americans so interested in walking?

31.What is true about the rate of" heart disease between 1992 and 1994 in the United States?

听力原文: Today I'd like to continue to talk about the reason why the United States developed at such a high speed in the past 400 years. There are many factors. America has an abundance of natural resources including some of the best farm lands in the world. People from many countries settled them, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and skills. But in the last 100 years it has been the workingman that was the backbone of the nation.

What is the American workingman? He's a worker in a shoe factory or a meat packing-house or a coal mine. But more than that, he is a husband and a father. He raised his children to value the importance of cooperation. And he raised his children to help them better themselves. Seldom do their children forget the value they have learnt at home.

The workingman fought hard to achieve what he has for almost all his life, but today the workingman is faced with a new kind of struggle. Ever advancing technology is taking his job. It's very probable that the workingman will be replaced by a machine.

(23)

A.The United States is quite rich in natural resources.

B.The Americans are the people with knowledge and skills from many countries.

C.The young Americans are well-educated to value the importance of cooperation.

D.The workingman is now enjoying the wonderful life he achieved through struggle.

听力原文: Ask the average American,"What is freedom?"You will probably hear,"It's being able to do what I want to do." When Americans think of freedom, they often think of individualism. They see themselves more as individuals than as members of a family or social group.

In American culture.freedom means equality. The Declaration of Independence states that"all men are created equal."That does not mean equal in abilities or status. For Americans, equality refers to equal worth and equal opportunity. Every individual should have an equal chance to improve his life.True,America has not always lived up to that ideal. For many years,Native Americans,African Americans and immigrants have protested their unequal treatment. But American culture still teaches that people can work hard and fulfill their dreams.Whether this idea is true or not, people hear rags-to-riches stories often enough to confirm it in the minds of many people.

Freedom arouses strong feelings for Americans. The idea of liberty binds people together in this"land of the free." However, problems still exist. One individual's freedom can conflict with the rights of others. Someone once said,"You have the freedom to swing your fist around if you want. But your freedom ends where my nose begins."People can also become too concerned about their own rights. They might demand special treatment. However, the path to freedom is not completely smooth.Even so,for Americans,no other road is really worth traveling.

What do Americans often think of when thinking of freedom?

A.Collectivism.

B.Equality.

C.Social group.

D.Individualism.

American Wedding

"I do." To Americans those two words carry great meaning. They can even change

your life, especially if you say them at your own wedding.Making wedding vows is like signing a contract. Now Americans don't really think marriage is a business deal. But marriage is serious business.

It all begins with engagement.Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her.If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her.Often he tries to surprise her by "popping the question" in a romantic way.Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right to get married. The man usually gives his fiancee (未婚妻) a diamond ring as a symbol of their engagement. They may be engaged for weeks, months or even years. As the big day approaches, their friends will provide many useful gifts.Today many couples also receive advice during engagement. This prepares them for the challenges of married life.

At last it is time for the wedding.Although most weddings follow traditions, there's still room for American.individualism (个人主义) For example, the usual place for a wedding is a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot.A few even have the ceremony while sky-diving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few.close friends. They choose their own style. of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue."The groom wears a formal suit.

As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience.Music.signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride.Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows.Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health." But.sometimes the couple has composed their own vows. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment:"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"

At the wedding reception, the bride and.groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite.Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers (花束) to a group of single girls.Tradition says that the one who catches the flower will be the next to marry. After the reception, many couples take a honeymoon, a one-to-two-week vacation trip, to celebrate their new marriage.

American culture has not been immune to cultural influences from outside. The idea of demo
cracy came from the ancient Greeks; the Industrial Revolution started in England; jazz and rock music preserve African rhythms—to pick a few examples. Indeed, many of the things we think of as "100 percent American" came from other cultures.

Still, most of the changes in American culture over the last century have come from within, as the result of inventions and discoveries. And change has been dramatic. One hundred years ago the United States was largely a nation of farmers. Many of the things we take for granted today—a high school education, for example, or indoor plumbing—were luxuries then. The moon was a light for lovers, not a site for scientific exploration; genetic engineering (基因工程) was not even a subject for science fiction, much less for laboratory research and corporate investments. The decades following the Second World War, in particular, were characterized by spectacular scientific and technological advances, national self-confidence, optimism, and (for many Americans) prosperity. The American economy was the strongest in the world: more goods were produced and sold, more people were working, and the standard of living was higher than ever before. Polls (民意调查) taken in the 1950s and 1960s show that the average American was preoccupied with the questions "will I make a good living?" "Will I be successful?" and "Will I raise successful, happy children?" Success was defined in terms of maintaining a stable family and "keeping up with the Jones". Most Americans believed that if they played by the rules—if they work hard and did what was expected, if they sacrificed their own needs to those of their family and their employer—they would be rewarded with an ever-increasing standard of living, a devoted spouse, and decent children. An expensive car, a suburban home, and children in college were tangible (可触知的) signs that hard work and self-sacrifice paid off.

Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A.There is no 100 percent American culture.

B.American culture has never be influenced by other cultures.

C.America borrowed the idea of democracy from the ancient Greeks.

D.Inventions and discoveries caused the changes within American culture.

听力原文: Americans like to laugh and make jokes, especially practical jokes. These jokes, intended to trick or deceive people in some harmless way, and are always popular. In the United States and a few other countries the first day of April, April Fool's Day, is a day devoted to such harmless practical jokes and an excuse for every American to fool his friends and neighbors.

When I was a college student, our daily college newspaper, which was read by most of the people who lived in the city near the college as well as by students, always had a special April Fool's Edition. One year the paper said that a beautiful park in the center of the campus was to be turned into a parking lot.

Another year the paper falsely reported that a Russian submarine had been seen in the lake which is on the campus. It was surprising that many people believed these stories. But probably the most successful practical being invaded by people from Mars. His description of this invasion from outer space was so realistic that he caused a panic and was actualy responsible for the deaths of several people.

Many visitors find the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One's first
impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment. At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. Bus drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry that they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well.

Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to "push back", just as city people do in Tokyo, Beirut, or Sao Paulo, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kind and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be. If you need help or want to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, "I am a stranger here. Can you help me?" Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find your way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help, otherwise they are unlikely to help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or discouraged; just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger.

The writer intends to tell you something about ______.

A.city life in America

B.the fast pace in big cities in America

C.foreigners first arriving in the U. S.

D.Americans attitude towards foreigners
