In order to show how black people throughout North American were culturally isolated from the start,

it Is important to recognize how strange and unnatural the initial contact with Western society was for the African. Once we realize what a shock this first encounter was, we can begin to understand the amazing albeit agonizing transformation that produced contemporary black Americans from the people who were first bound and brought to this country. Life in colonial America was completely different from what the African thought human existence should be. This was one of the most important aspects of the enslavement of the African, the radically different, even opposing cultural perspectives that the colonial American and the African brought to one another.

Early European-Americans could not appreciate the profundity of the African world view because it differed so greatly from the Western system of thought and ideas. Western culture, which views the ultimate happiness of humanity as the sole purpose of the universe, could not comprehend the goals or “canons of satisfaction” of a culture with elaborate concepts of predetermination and of the subservience of human beings to a complex of Gods. The cruelty of this misunderstanding, when contained within already terrifying circumstance of slavery, should be readily apparent.

Africans were unable to preserve many of the achievements of their civilization under a system of slavery which denied cultural autonomy to the oppressed. European-Americans immediately attempted to eradicate all manifestations of African political, social, and economic traditions. Moreover, the highly developed African system of Jurisprudence could not function under the American form of slavery. Nevertheless, Africans were able to preserve some of their own cultural perspectives, and many of the attitudes, customs, and cultural characteristics of the black American can be traced directly back to Africa. Religion, non-material aspects of

African culture, which could not be suppressed, now form the most apparent legacies of African past.

Because of the violent differences between what was indigenous to their culture and what was forced on them m slavery, Africans developed an eclectic view of the world, containing both those elements of African temperament that could not be suppressed and those elements of Western culture that were essential to survival in North America. Afro-Americans (the first American-born black people, who retained many pure Africanisms ) and later black Americans inherited these cultural complexities and added individual nuances of their own. So, after several generations in the United States, the black Americans developed a separate culture which reflects both their African and their American experience. The African culture, the retention of some parts of this culture in American, and the weight of the step-culture produced a new people.

show to promote your business or product? Is this your first time as a participant in any trade show? Are you confused about how to make the most out of the local trade show to promote your product or service? This presentation may help. The most common problem for small business owners is it's difficult to get the right people to communicate with the visitors. To solve this problem, you must identify a few smart people within your organization who are great at interpersonal communication skills. Another big problem for small business owners is that they do not know which the right booth is. Booths at great locations are normally priced higher than ordinary booths. This can be a good way to find out one. However, do not forget to bargain for the booth--they are often sold for less than the card price. Some may also wonder how to display their products in order to attract more visitors. There are different ways to display your products in a booth. For example you can get some sign holders, brochure holders, wall magazine racks, poster frames and stands etc. These items would make your booth look more professional. Last but not the least, talk to some people who have previously participated in that trade show to get a better understanding of what you can expect.

Fireworks

If you have ever been to an aerial fireworks show at an amusement park, baseball game, Fourth of July celebration or on New Year's Eve, then you know that fireworks have a special and beautiful magic all their own--a good show is absolutely amazing!

Have you ever wondered how this magic works? What is launched into the sky to make these beautiful displays? In this article, you will learn all about aerial fireworks.

Basic Components

Just about everyone in the United States has some personal experience with fireworks, either from Fourth of July or New Year's Eve celebrations. For example, you have probably seen both sparklers and firecrackers. It turns out that if you understand these two pyrotechnic (有关烟火制造术的) devices, then you are well on your way to understanding aerial fireworks! The sparkler demonstrates how to get bright, sparkling light from a firework, and the firecracker shows how to create an explosion.

Firecrackers have been around for hundreds of years. They consist of either black powder (also known as gunpowder) or flash powder in a tight paper tube with a fuse to light the powder. Black powder, discussed briefly in How Rocket Engines Work, contains charcoal, sulfur and potassium nitrate. A composition used in a firecracker might have aluminum instead of or in addition to charcoal in order to brighten the explosion.

Sparklers are very different from firecrackers. A sparkler burns over a long period of time (up to a minute) and produces extremely bright and showery light. Sparklers are often referred to as "snowball sparklers" because of the ball of sparks that surrounds the burning portion of the sparkler. If you look at Patent #3,862,865: Sparkler composition, you can see that a sparkler consists of several different compounds:

A fuel

An oxidizer

Iron or steel powder

A binder

The fuel is charcoal and sulfur, as in black powder. The binder can be sugar or starch. Mixed with water, these chemicals form. a slurry that can be coated on a wire (by dipping) or poured into a tube. Once it dries, you have a sparkler. When you light it, the sparkler bums from one end to the other (like a cigarette). The fuel and oxidizer are proportioned, along with the other chemicals, so that the sparkler burns slowly rather than exploding like a firecracker.

It is very common for fireworks to contain aluminum, iron, steel, zinc or magnesium dust in order to create bright, shimmering sparks. The metal flakes heat up until they are incandescent and shine brightly or, at a high enough temperature, actually burn. A variety of chemicals can be added to create colors. See lights and colors for a good explanation of the chemistry and physics of color in fireworks.

Aerial Fireworks

An aerial firework is normally formed as a shell that consists of four parts:

Container----usually pasted paper and string formed into a cylinder

Stars--spheres, cubes or cylinders of a sparkler-like composition

Bursting charge--firecracker-like charge at the center of the shell

Fuse—provides a time delay so the shell explodes at the right altitude

The shell is launched from a mortar. The mortar might be a short, steel pipe with a lifting charge of black powder that explodes in the pipe to launch the shell. When the lifting charge fires to launch the shell, it lights the shell's fuse. The shell's fuse bums while the shell rises to its correct altitude, and then ignites the bursting charge so it explodes.

Simple shells consist of a paper tube filled with stars and black powder. Stars come in all shapes and sizes, but you can imagine a simple star as something like sparkler compound formed into a ball the size of a pea or a dime. The stars are poured into the tube and then surrounded by b

?Read the article below about the securities exchange.

?Choose the best sentence to fill in each of the gaps.

?For each gap 8-12, mark one letter(A-G)on your Answer Sheet.

?Do not use any letter more than once.

The Securities Exchange

When people buy stock, most do so through one of the securities exchanges or marketplaces for stocks and bonds. These marketplaces are commonly called "stock exchanges" and they provide a meeting place for both the buyer and seller. To understand why such securities or stock exchanges are important in the purchase and sale of stocks and bonds, consider what would happen if you, and everyone who wanted do buy (or sell) securities, had to find your own buyer (or seller). If the market is going down the only way to recover your investment is to hang on to the stock and wait for it to come back. More importantly, how would you find out who is interested in selling that stock to you (or buying it from you)? In order to handle this marketing problem, securities exchanges sprung up. These exchanges are nothing more than locations where stocks are bought and sold. And since there is a common meeting place for there (or send their representatives). The result is a very systematic market process, where transations are handled in an orderly manner and the operations are both supervised and regulated by law. (8) Buying and Selling Securities

The general approach in buying and selling securities, regardless of the exchange where they are purchased, is basically the same, We provide a general picture of how security transactions take place; and for a fuller understanding, we will discuss some of the important terminology and functions of security trading. (9)

How would you go about buying stock in a major corporation? It's really quite simple. First, you would decide what you want to buy—such as 100 shares of IBM. (10)

Assuming your broker works for a major stock brokerage, the order would be telephoned directly to a company clerk on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The clerk would hand the order to a member of the Exchange who is a partner in the brokerage. This individual would then go to the appropriate locale on the trading floor and ask for the latest quote on IBM. Let us say it is "70 to a quarter." (11)

If your broker wants, a sale can be struck at $ 70.25 since the order calls for a purchase at the current market price. More likely, however, your broker will bid $ 70.125 and hope to save you one eighth of a point or $ 12.50. And it is likely that another broker with an order to sell will show up and accept the bid of $ 70 1/8. The two brokers will then initial each other's sales orders and see that the transaction is relayed to the exchange employee known as the reporter. The reporter sees that the sale is reported and a few minutes later it will come out on the ticker tape.

Bulls and Bears

What does "a bull" mean? It is a term that is used to refer to an invester who expects prices to rise.

(12) Of course, the market will not always rise. Sometimes stocks drop and remain low for extended periods of time. Those investors who expect stock prices to decline are known as "bears." During the Great Depression, the bears made a great deal of money. While the bulls were "buying long" the bears were "selling short."

A How would you know what a fair price for the security is?

B This means that someone is currently bidding "$ 70 for the stock and another party is willing to sell at $ 70.25."

C How stocks are actually purchased

D "Bulls" buy in anticipation of the market going up.

E In this way, the buyer (or seller) is ensured that the best price is secured and they are not shortchanged or cheated in any way.
