One way that scientists learn about man is by studying animals, such as mice and monke
ys.科学家了解人类的一种方法是研究如老鼠、猴子这样的动物。The scientists in this laboratory are

experimenting on mice. They are studying the relationship between diet and health. At this time, over one hundred experiments are being done in this laboratory.

In one of these experiments, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups.

After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.

The second group of mice is normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years, not the three years or more of the thinner mice.

The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought - about a year and a half. But they aren't as healthy. They're sick more often than the other two groups.

A:T

B:F

The manager of a small building company was very surprised to get a bill for two white mic
e which one of his workmen had bought. He sent for the workman and asked him why he had the bill sent to the company.

"Well," the workman answered, "you remember the house we were repairing in Newbridge last week, don't you? One of the things we had to do there was to put in some new electric wiring. Well, in one place we had to pass some wires through a pipe thirty feet long and about an inch across, which was built into solid stone and has four big bends in it. None of us could think how to do this until I had a good idea. I went to a shop and' bought two white mice, one of them male and the other female. Then I tied a thread to the body of the male mouse and put him into the pipe at one end, while Bill held the female mouse at the other end and pressed her to help her. I suppose he was a gentleman even though he was only a mouse. Anyway, as he ran through the pipe, he pulled the thread behind him. It was then quite easy for us to tie one end of the thread to the electric wires and pull them through the pipe."

The manager paid the bill for the white mice.

The manager wondered why ________.

A.the workman sent a bill to the company

B.the mice bought for the job were a male and a female

C.the workman had paid for the mice

D.mice were needed in repairing a house

Many people dream of having a smarter brain. Princeton neurobiologist Joseph Z. Tsien fo
und the key. In September he announced that he built a better mouse by altering a gene that 【M1】______ affects learning and memory. A similar process of gene manipulation might conceivably be used one day to boost up 【M2】______ intelligence in humans. The secret lies in a feature of brain cells which called the 【M3】______ nomda receptor, which Tsien likes to a cylindrical tube or window 【M4】______ that mediates the flow of information. When the window is open, chemicals called neurotransmitters flow through easily and memory is registered or stored. Tsien noticed that the receptor 【M5】______ worked more efficiently when teamed with the gene NR2B, so he introduced extra NR2B genes into a batch of fertilized mouse eggs. In a normal mouse, the memory window is open in just 【M6】______ 150-thousandths of a second. In Tsiens specifically engineered 【M7】______ mice, the window opens for 250-thousandths of a second, long enough to make a remarkable impression in memory retention. 【M8】______ When he pitted his mice with common mice, they won paws down. 【M9】______ Ordinary mice could recognize a Lego block for 12 hours, but smart mice could remember the block for up to three days. "Thats a profound enhancement," Tsien says. Can it be done with humans? Maybe, so genetic engineering 【M10】______ will have to make some extraordinary advances first. And some thorny ethical issues will have to be resolved. Meanwhile, Tsien promises to keep his furry little geniuses locked up in a lab, far from your larder. "Otherwise," he says, "you might need a smart cat or a smart mousetrap to catch them."
