In the 1920s demand for American farm products feel, as European countries began to recove
r from World War I and instituted austerity (紧缩)programs to reduce their imports. The result was a sharp drop in farm prices. This period was more disastrous for farmers than earlier times had been, because farmers were no longer self-sufficient. They were paying for machinery, see, and fertilizer, and they were also buying consumer goods. The prices of. the items farmers bought remained constant, while prices they received for their products fell. These developments were made worse by the Great Depression which began in 1929 and extended throughout the 1930s.

In 1929, under President Herbert Hoover, the Federal Farm Board was organized. It established the principle of direct interference with supply and demand, and it represented the first national commitment to provide greater economic stability for farmers.

President Hoover' s successor attached even more importance to this problem. One of the first measures proposed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt when the took office in 1933 was the Agricultural Adjustment Act, which was subsequently passed by Congress. This law gave the Secretary of Agriculture the power to reduce production through voluntary agreements with famers who were paid to take their land out of use. A deliberate scarcity of farm products was planned in an effort to raise prices. This law was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on the grounds that general taxes were being collected to pay one special group of people. However, new laws were passed immediately that achieved the same result of resting soil and providing flood-control measures, but which were based on the principle of soil conservation. The Roosevelt Administration believed Administration believed that rebuilding the nation' s soil was in the national interest and was not simply a plan to help farmers at the expense of other citizens. Later the government guaranteed loans to farmers so that they could buy farm machinery, hybrid (杂交)grain, and fertilizers.

What brought about the decline in the demand for American farm products?

A.The impact of the Great Depression.

B.The shrinking of overseas markets.

C.The destruction caused by the First World War.

Evaluation of energy-saving methods

Chrysler Building

Location: New York, New York

Building Type: commercial office tower

Construction System: steel frame, metal cladding

This report describes energy-saving measures taken by the building manager of the Chrysler Building. These measures range from the simple and quick to the expensive and time consuming.

The most significant energy saving measures were achieved by planting a variety of plants with different growth characteristics, both on the roof and on individual office balconies, which added cooling shade in the summer. The use of inexpensive exterior bamboo blinds during summer months produced significant reductions in need for air-conditioning, which saved the Chrysler building a considerable amount of money. Surprisingly, installing double-paned windows was the least cost-effective measure, despite recommendations by environmental organizations.

Future contributions to the Chrysler Building energy-saving initiative will include planting deciduous trees. In the summer, these will provide shade; in the winter, the leafless branches will allow sunlight into the building's interior.

Note: Building design accounted for 30% of energy emissions and the construction materials of the Chrysler Building accounted for another 30%.

What is the main topic of the report?

A.Gardening flowers and plants

B.Choosing and installing windows

C.Redesigning office space

D.Reducing energy costs

听力原文: At present, human beings have used many devices to measure time. Perhaps, the sundial was, one of the earliest and simplest devices. A sundial can measure the movement of the sun across the sky each day.

The sundial worked very well only when the sun was shining. So other ways of measuring the passing of time were invented at that time. One device was the hourglass. It used a thin stream of falling sand to measure time.

By the 1700s, people had already developed mechanical clocks and watches. And today many of our clocks and watches are electronic.

So we have devices to mark the passing of time. But what time is it now? Clocks in different parts of the world do not show the same time at the same time. As international communications and travel grew, it became clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world.

In 1884, an international conference divided the world into 24 time areas or zones. Each zone represents one hour. The astronomical observation in Greenwich, England, was chosen as the starting point for the time zone.

Most people have no trouble in agreeing that time moves forward. Some scientists believe there is one reason why time moves forward. It is clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world with scientific law: the second law of thermodynamics. The law says disorder increases with time.

(33)

A.It measures the length of a day and a night.

B.it measures the movement of the sun each day.

C.It measures the passing of hours, minutes and perhaps seconds.

D.It measures the shadow of the stick across the flat surface of the sundial.

听力原文: The breach of the university's online application database exposed "dozens" of r
ecords to unauthorized individuals, said Katharine Harrington, USC dean of admissions and financial aid. She could not be more specific about the number of people whose personal data may have been viewed by the hacker or what their motivation was for the computer break-in. The university was not able to identify exactly which records may have been exposed. The site will be back up once new security measures are taken, the university said in a written statement. A California law that took effect two years ago requires institutions to inform. those affected when their personal information has been stolen or accidentally released. A number of states are considering similar legislation, and a bill is pending in the U.S. Senate that would also require institutions to tell people when the privacy of their personal information has been compromised. Consumer advocates say such notification is important because it provides an opportunity for consumers to put a fraud alert on their credit file. Identity theft is the top consumer fraud com- plaint, according to the Federal Trade Commission, which estimates that some 10 million people are affected each year.

What happened to the university?

A.Many computers were broken.

B.Dozens of records of applicants were hacked into.

C.A number of people could not be identified.

D.The new computer software was stolen.

听力原文: The decade for natural disaster reduction is a program designed to reduce the im
pact of natural disasters throughout the world. With support from the United Nations, countries will be encouraged to share information about disaster reduction. For instance, information about how to plan for and cope with hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. One of the most important things the program plans to do is to remind us of what we can do to protect ourselves. For example, we can pack a suitcase with flashlights, a radio, food, drinking water and some tools. This safety may help us survive a disaster until help arrives. Besides, the program will encourage governments to establish building standards, emergency response plans, and training programs. These measures can help to limit the destruction by natural disasters. The comparatively mild effects of the northern California earthquake in 1989 are good evidence that we do have the technology to prevent vast destruction. The recent disasters, on the other hand, prove that people will suffer if we don’t use that technology. When a highway collapsed in northern California, people were killed in their cars. The highway was not built according to today’s strict standards to resist earthquakes. Individuals and governments have to be far-sighted. We should take extra time and spend extra money to build disaster safety into our lives. Although such a program can’t hold back the winds or stop earthquakes, they can save people's lives and homes.

What is the purpose of the program mentioned in this passage.'?

A.To predict natural disasters that can cause vast destruction.

B.To limit the destruction that natural disasters may cause.

C.To gain financial support from the United Nations.

D.To propose measures to hold back natural disasters.

H5N1 avian influenza, known commonly as bird flu, has killed at least 15 people across Asi
a and was confirmed in China on January 27. No human cases have been found in the mainland, but 13 of the country's 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities (直辖市) have reported the disease in poultry.

The Chinese government has taken measures to prevent and control the disease. Poultry within 3 km of infected farms is to be killed and those within 5 km vaccinated (进行接种疫苗 ). Meanwhile, there will be constant monitoring and daily reports on the disease across the country, and increased production of bird flu vaccines.

Among the Asian countries and regions affected by bird flu in animals, only Vietnam and Thailand have reported human cases. The people infected were reported to have caught the disease from poultry. While the World Health Organization (WHO) said there is "no proof of human-to-human transmission (传播)" of bird flu.

The big fear is that the disease could combine with a human influenza virus (病毒) to create a deadly new disease that will kill millions of people across the globe. Many Asian farmers live closely with their animals and sell live chickens in the market. This greatly increases the possibility of human beings infected with bird flu.

A spokesman of the WHO said that Asian countries affected by bird flu should introduce a more healthy way of raising and selling chickens. And the people there have to completely change their lifestyle. and attitude towards animals. Here are some safety measures for people to stay healthy:

Keep fit and well through regular exercise;

Avoid infected poultry and infected people;

Avoid eating raw or under-done poultry and eggs;

Make sure there is always fresh air in your home;

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;

Wash your hands frequently.

What does the underlined word "poultry" mean?

A.Wild birds.

B.Wild animals.

C.Home-raised birds.
