听力原文:The Internet is regarded by many as the flagship of global English. According to
a recent survey, English is the medium for more than 80% of the information stored in the world's computers. In many countries, computers have become extensively networked and the networks themselves linked into the global structure of the Internet. The electronic media, such as the Internet, that bind the world together need a common standard to insure speed and proficiency. So the English language becomes the operating standard for global communication. But is it true that the Internet will remain a major driver of the English language? At present, the language most widely used is English. But this only reflects the fact in the last century, i.e. 90% of the world's computers connected to the Internet are based in English-speaking countries. I think in the 21 st century, the overall shift in Internet use will be similar to that outlined for the economy and the number of computer hosts in Asia will eventually outstrip those in English-speaking countries. Furthermore, the Internet, which used to be a tool for international communication between a global academic elite, has been increasingly serving local, cultural, commercial and educational purposes. And as the Internet becomes more and more widely used, it is natural to expect that a wider range of languages will be employed.

Nowadays, Internet users may have a choice of "language preference" information when they contact a website. If a page is available in that language, it can be retrieved in preference to one in English. This means, for example, that the Web will appear to be in Spanish to a Spanish speaker and in Chinese to a Chinese speaker, provided, of course, the hosts contacted maintain pages in these languages.

What is considered to be the operating standard for global communication?

A.The Internet.

B.The English language.

C.The networked computer.

D.The electronic media.

Scientists claim that air pollution causes a decline in the world's average air temperatur
e. In order to prove that theory, ecologists have turned to historical data in relation to especially huge volcanic eruptions. They suspect that volcanoes effect weather changes that are similar to air pollution.

One source of information is the effect of the eruption of Tambora, a volcano in Sumbawa, the Dutch East Indies, in April 1815. The largest recorded volcanic eruption, Tambora threw 150 million tons of fine ash into the stratosphere. The ash from a volcano spreads worldwide in a few days and remains in the air for years, It’s effect is to mm incoming solar radiation into space and thus cool the earth. For example, records of weather in England show that between April and November 1815, the average temperature had fallen 4.50 ℃. During the next twenty-four months, England suffered one of the coldest periods of its history. Farmers' records from April 1815 to December 1818 indicate frost throughout the spring and summer and sharp decreases in crop and livestock markets. Since there was a time lag of several years between causes and effect, by the time the world agricultural commodity community had deteriorated, no one realized the cause.

Ecologists today warn that we face a twofold menace. The ever-present possibility of volcanic eruptions, such as that of Mt St Helens in Washington, added to man's pollution of the atmosphere with oil, gas, coal, and other polluting substances, may bring increasingly colder weather.

According to the passage, the effects of Tambora's eruption were______.

A.of several days' duration worldwide

B.felt mainly in the Dutch East Indies

C.evident in the decreased world temperature

D.immediately evident to the world's scientists

听力原文: The world I entered at the age of eighteen was a very cheap world. Prices were stable. When I entered St. Thomas' Hospital I rent a set of rooms in Vincent Square for which I paid 18 shillings a week. My landlady provided me with a very good breakfast before I went to the hospital and a dinner when I came back at half past six. I only had to pay for the breakfasts and dinners twelve shillings a week. For four-pence I lunched at St. Thomas' on bread and butter and a glass of milk. I was able to live very well, pay my fees, buy my necessary instruments, clothe myself, and have a lot of fun on fourteen pounds a month. And I could always pawn my microscope for three pounds.

I spent five years at St. Thomas' Hospital. I was a bad student, for my heart, as you might have guessed, was not in it. I wanted, I had always wanted, to be a writer, and in the evenings, after my dinner, I wrote and read. Before long, I wrote a novel called "Liza of Lambeth", which I sent to a publisher and was accepted. It came out during my last year at the hospital and it was successful It was of course an accident, but I did not know that. I felt I could afford to give up medicine and make writing my profession; so, three days after I graduated from the school of medicine, I left for Spain to write another book. I did not realize, at that time, that I was taking a great risk.
