It used to be the case that if you left your car in the sun on a hot summer's day, then ge

tting back in again afterwards was agony. Not any more. Now you press your key into the door lock and the car's air-conditioning system automatically starts cooling the interior. You just have to wait a minute before you get in.

That is just one of the newer gimmicks that make the modem car so much more comfortable to drive than those produced not so long ago. Another innovation is the self-adjusting seat. When you put the key in the car door, the front seat will automatically adjust itself to the driver's preferred driving position.

These ideas were dreamt up at General Motors' research laboratories in Detroit. The laboratory was set up in the mid-sixties, in response to consumer groups who attacked the company for its safety record. Since then, the company has set itself an impossible goal: that you'll be able to walk away from most car accidents. It spends roughly one billion US dollars every year on safety research.

The company is working on helping drivers survive crashes at higher speeds. The idea is that the driver won't fly out of the car because of his seat belt, He won't be crushed by the side door coming in because it will be strengthened by a side beam. His ribs won't be crushed, nor his organs injured by the steering wheel, because it will bend when the body hits it. His face won't be slashed by broken glass because the windscreen won't shatter.

Every year, the total world-wide bill for injuries of all types is estimated at US $ 500 billion. Transport injuries of all sorts account for one quarter of this. This gives some indication of the size of the problem the scientists working at General Motors' research laboratory have set themselves.

"Not any more." in paragraph one indicates that ______.

A.the sun is no longer as hot these days

B.the car's air-conditioner can make the interior cooler

C.the painful experience doesn't exist any longer

D.the driver doesn't need to wait before he gets in the ear now

A credit card is a plastic card (or its equivalent) to be used upon presentation by the cardholder to obtain money, goods, or services, possibly under a line of credit established by the card issuer. The cardholder is billed for any outstanding balance.

Credit card customers are given a credit limit on the credit card account and can buy goods and services up to this amount. Normally, banks will set different credit lines to the different groups of cardholders. Every time cardholder uses a credit card for purchasing, he/she must sign a sales slip in the presence of the seller, and the signature is then compared to the signature on the card. Copies of the sales slips have the details of the card and they also show the details and amount of the sale.

Each month the cardholder receives a statement from the bank which details all the trans- actions in the month, together with the total amount outstanding and any minimum amount that needs to be paid. When the full balance is not settled each month, the cardholder is charged a compound interest (say 0. 05% ) on the outstanding balance , and this is supposed to provide the bank with a main source of income (although in China , this revenue is still low because people are reluctant to run into debt) . Other two major sources of credit card services are the annual fee from the cardholders and the percentage of the sales revenue as the commission paid by the seller.

A credit card is a plastic card and the like to be used to obtain money, goods, or services and an overdraft is not allowed.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Doesn't say

Dear Mr. James Palmer,

I am a tenant in your apartment at 295 Seneca Street. I am writing to you because I will need an extension on my August rent payment. As you know, my rent is always paid on the 1st of each month and no later than the 5th. Unfortunately, I will not be able to send the money on time and would like an extension to August 20.

Nature Publishing Group, where I used to work, was acquired by One Media Holdings last month. This company moved its corporate headquarters to Wilmington, Delaware. Although I lost my job, Nature Publishing Group' s employees here were promised severance pay but have yet to receive it. Company attorneys insist that payments will be made by August 18th.

I have leased this apartment from you for several years and have never been late with rent payment. As this apartment is comfortable and quiet, I have no desire to leave this place. My financial problems will be resolved, since I will start a new job at the beginning of September.

I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Bob Schmidt

Where does Mr. Bob Schmidt live?

A.In Palm Springs

B.In Wilmington

C.In Delaware

Pushbike Peril

Low speed bicycle crashes can badly injure—or even kill—children if they fall onto the ends of the handlebars (车把). So a team of engineers is redesigning the humble handlebar in a bid to make it safer.

Kristy Arbogast, a bioengineer at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, began the project with her colleagues after a study of serious abdominal (腹部的) injuries in children in the past 30 years showed that more than a third were ca,used by bicycle accidents. "The task was to identify how the injuries occurred and come up with some countermeasures (对策)", she says.

By interviewing the Children and their parents, Arbogast and her team were able to reconstruct (重建;重构) many of the accidents and identified a common mechanism responsible for serious injures. They discovered that most occur when children hit an obstacle at a slow speed, causing them to topple over. To maintain their balance they turn the handlebars, through 90 degrees — but their momentum (冲力) forces them into the end of the handlebars. The bike then falls over and the other end of the handlebars hits the ground, ramming it into their abdomen.

The solution the group came up with is a handgrip(握柄) fitted with a spring and damping (制动的;减速的,缓冲的) system. The spring absorbs up to 50 percent of the forces transmitted through the handlebars in an impact. The group hopes to commercialize (使商品化) the device, which should add only a few dollars to the cost of a bike. "But our task has been one of education because up until now, bicycle manufacturer were unaware of the problem," says Arbogast.

The team has also approached the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to try to persuade man-ufacturers to adopt the new design. A decision is expected later this year.

According to the passage, some engineers are trying to improve the handlebars because

A.they are not noble enough.

B.they may kill children.

C.they are likely to crash.

D.they make the bike move at a low speed.

Advertising

The primary function of advertising is to communicate marketing objectives to selected target audience. It is used to accomplish a number of tasks, using different media vehicles, reaching diverse audience, and gaining interest with a number of creative approaches. However, despite the seemingly endless channels for utilizing advertising, it is basically a marketing communication too. When we examine an- successful advertising campaigns, we often find that advertising was used to accomplish inappropriate tasks. Successful advertising must be oriented to specific objectives. Before we can determine advertising objectives, it is advisable to distinguish between marketing and advertising goals. Effective advertising is an extension of the basic marketing plans and is derived from it. However, advertising goals are not the same as marketing goals. The marketing staff sets the marketing goals or objectives. The marketing department decides how to allocate resources to various tasks, including advertising. It also determines how these resources will be distributed to specific target markets and what sales objective can be expected over time and geography.

Examples of marketing objectives are

1. Attaining a market share increase from 2 percent of industry sales to 4 percent within 18 months.

2. Increasing distribution by number of retail outlets and/or geographical regions: If a product is currently available to 50% of the population or can be found in 50% of retail outlets, a marketing goal might be set to increase this figure to 60 percent by the end of the year.

3. Increasing total sales. Coals troy ha set in either number or units sold or traits sold ca: dollar volume of sales. Advertising goals are communication objectives designed to reach the target audience with the appropriate message. Ad goals are based on marketing objectives, but they are not the same as marketing goals. Advertising objectives might include

1. Increasing brand awareness from 20 percent to 30 percent among 18-to-34-year-old women within one year.

2. Increasing recall of brand advertising by 10 percent in the next three months.

3. Increasing favorable product attitudes by 10 percent in the next year.

Note that advertising goals are based on improving communication and consumer attitudes toward a product. It is interesting to note that a survey indicated that a majority of companies wanted to measure advertising success based on sales. Obviously, even sophisticated corporations often confuse marketing and advertising goals.

Advertising is the communication arm of the marketing process. It is a method of delivering a message from a sponsor, through a formal communication channel, to a desired audience. Advertising has many roles. It is designed to dispose a person to buy a product, to change minds, or even to advocate leas con- starting ("demarketing"). It may be used to help elect a candidate, raise money for charity, or support a cause. Must advertising, however, is for the marketing of goods and services.

Advertising is also part of the everyday culture of virtually every American. It is estimated that the average person sees or hears as many as 1,200 ads and commercials each day. Advertising is part of the social, cultural, and business environment, it mirrors this environment and also brings about subtle changes in the behavior. of the public that uses it. It is no wonder that advertising is one of the most scrutinized of all business enterprises.

Today, advertising is functioning in a changing economic and social climate. Advertisers are viewed in many ways by the publics they serve, Manufacturers are asking for

A.the number of products sold.

B.increase of a product's market share.

C.the improvement of communication and consumers' attitude toward products.

D.increase of retail outlets.
