The numbers of deer have fluctuated markedly since the entry of Europeans into Puget Sound
country. The early explorers and settlers told of abundant deer in the early 1800s and yet almost in the same breath bemoaned the lack of this succulent game animal. Famous explorers of the North American frontier, Lewis and Clark arrived at the mouth of the Columbia River on November 14, 1805, in nearly starved circumstances. They had experienced great difficulty finding game west of the Rockies and not until the second of December did they kill their first elk. To keep 40 people alive that winter, they consumed approximately 150 elk and 20 deer. And when game moved out of the lowlands in early spring, the expedition decided to return east rather than face possible starvation. Later on in the early years of the nineteenth century, when Fort Vancouver became the headquarters for the Hudsons Bay Company, deer populations continued to fluctuate. David Douglas, Scottish botanical explorer of the 1830s, found a disturbing change in the animal life around the fort during the period between his first visit in 1825 and his final contact with the fort in 1832. A recent Douglas biographer states: "The deer which once picturesquely dotted the meadows around the fort were gone[in 1832], hunted to extermination in order to protect the crops."

The phrase "in the same breath" in the passage is closest in meaning to

A.impatiently

B.humorously

C.continuously

D.immediately

听力原文: Many suffer from shyness. In order to give other people a chance to know more about you, you need to get over it. Then how to control shyness?

First, make decisions not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don't turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.

Second, prepare yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. Think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.

Third, if you start feeling self-conscious in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people. Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned about the impression they are making, too. Don't be afraid to speak up and give your: point of view. Moreover, remember everyone experiences failures and disappointments. Profit them as lessons instead of frustrations.

As each of us is an individual, we behave in our own personal ways. No one gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feelings so they can face the cameras and the public.

(30)

A.Because it can help you in case you don't know what to say to others.

B.Because many parties ask people to do this.

C.Because you can show it to others at the party.

D.Because shy people like to write instead of speaking.

On line courses (also called distance learning) are a hot new trend in American education.

On line courses (also called distance learning) are a hot new trend in American education. According to the nonprofit Distance Education and Training Council, about 400 US colleges and schools offer some portion of their programs on the We b. At the university level, they cost the same as traditional classes and requir e similar weekly assignments and textbook reading, the difference is in class pa rticipation. Generally speaking, students congregate(使聚集) on line throughout each week to explore topic with the professor, but these discussions occur “asynchronously(不同时发生地)”rather than in real time. (You read others’ comments and post your own whenever you get a chance.) Written assignments are posted, you email in your work periodically, and you’re required to take a proctored exam in order to receive degree credit. Career boosting business administration and information technology programs are the most popular, but you’ll also find a variety of literal arts offerings, from film theory to medieval history and foreign lang uage study. While you still can’t get an Ivy League degree on line, a growing number of elite(卓越的) institutions, including Stanford and New York Univer sity are beginning to offer on line courses. The benefits for busy people are obvious. “I always get a front row seat,” says one student studying at the State University of New York Learning Network. “I can get up in the middle of class, grab a cup of coffee. The class is waiting for me when I get back, and I haven’t missed a thing.” On the other hand, some students miss the face to face interaction that often sparks interest and involvement. Generally speaking, on line education costs ____.

A.more than the traditional one

B.less than the traditional one

C.as much as the traditional one

D.the author hasn’t mentioned
