Woman: Yes, I do. On average, I'd say I spend two or three days a week visiting customers.

Interviewer: Right ... "regularly". Now, do you ever work at home?

Woman: No, I don't. I'm seldom at home. I don't want to work there, too.

Interviewer: OK. Next question. Do you ever make presentations?

Interviewer: How often do you do that?

Woman: Let me see. Two or three times a month maybe. Some months it's more, some months it's less.

Woman: I'm afraid so. I don't have anyone to do it for me.

Most Americans don't like to get advice from members of his family. When they need advice,
they don't usually ask people they know. Instead, many Americans write letters to newspapers and magazines which give advice on many different subjects, including family problems, the use of language, health, cooking, child care, clothes, and how to buy a house or a car.

Most newspapers regularly print letters from readers with problems. Along with the letters there are answers written by people who are supposed to know how to solve such problems. Some of these writers are doctors; others are lawyers or educators. But two of the most famous writers of advice are women without special training for this kind of work. One of them answers letters addressed to" Dear Abby". The other is addressed as" Dear Ann Landers". Experience is their preparation for giving advice.

There is one writer who has not lived long enough to have much experience. She is a girl named Angel Cavalieve, who started writing advice for newspaper readers at the age of ten. Her advice to young readers now appears regularly in the Philadelphia Bulletin in a column called DEAR ANGEL.

The passage shows us when Americans need advice they often get it from ______.

A.women

B.books

C.letters

D.strangers

听力原文: Visitors to Britain sometimes are surprised to learn that newspapers there have such a large circulation. The Daily Mirror and the Daily Express both sell about four million copies every day. Apart from the national papers, there is another branch of the British press which sells almost as many copies. Local newspapers have a circulation of 13 million. Almost every town and country area has one.

Local newspapers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events— births, weddings, deaths, council meetings and sports—but the content is naturally influenced by the kind of community they serve. A great deal of local news is regularly supplied by clubs and churches in the neighborhood and it does not get out of date as quickly as national news.

Local newspapers do not often comment on problems of national importance and editors rarely take sides on political questions. They can often be of service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to provide better shopping facilities, improve transport in the area and preserve local monuments and places of interest.

These papers often sound rather dull and it seems surprising that they all make a profit. However, for many people in small towns and villages the death of someone known to them or the installation of traffic lights at a busy corner nearby can sometimes be more important than a disaster in a foreign country.

(23)

A.Large circulation of newspapers in Britain.

B.National newspapers in Britain.

C.Local Newspapers in Britain.

D.Difference between national newspapers and local newspapers in Britain.

听力原文: We must admit that their job is not the most romantic one in the world. We often take dustmen for granted. Perhaps because they usually come very early in the morning, before most people are up, we are inclined to forget that they exist. Our dustbins are emptied regularly, but we rarely stop to think about the men who do this. However, it is one of the most important jobs in the world, and when there are no dustmen to take away the rubbish the general public soon becomes aware that something is wrong.

Recently, the dustmen of England went on strike for higher wages. During the first few days it was regarded as a joke. For some reason, jokes have always been made about dustmen, and some people thought this strike was very amusing. But when the first two weeks had passed, and the dustbins were overflowing in nearly every backyard in the country, the joke did not seem so funny any more. As the strike continued, people could not bear the accumulation of rubbish around their dustbins, and they looked for other places in which to get rid of it. Even when the strike was over, and the wages dispute had been settled, it took several weeks for the country to get cleaned up completely, as so much rubbish bad accumulated. Perhaps now the English people appreciate the work of their dustmen rather more highly, and won't take them for granted any more.

(30)

A.Because they are often early risers.

B.Because they often do their work unnoticed.

C.Because they were born to do their work.

D.Because people never stop to talk to them.

A qualified doctor who rarely practiced but instead devoted his life to writing, once said
, "Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my lover." Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (契诃夫), was a great playwright (剧作家) and one of the masters of the modern short story.

When Chekhov entered the Moscow University Medical School in 1879, he started to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support his family. After he graduated, he wrote regularly for a local daily newspaper.

As a writer he was extremely fast, often producing a short story in an hour or less. Chekhov's medical and science experience can be seen through the indifference (冷漠) many of his characters show to tragic events. In 1892, he became a full time writer and published some of his most memorable stories.

Chekhov often wrote about the sufferings of life in small towns of Russia. Tragic events controlled his characters who were filled with feelings of hopelessness and despair.

It is often said that nothing happens in Chekhov's stories and plays. He made up for this with his exciting technique for developing drama within his characters. Chekhov's works combined the calm attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity (敏感) of an artist.

Some of Chekhov's works were translated into Chinese as early as the 1940s. One of his famous stories, The Man in a Shell (《装在套子里的人》), about a school teacher's extraordinarily orderly life, was selected as a text for Chinese senior students.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov______.

A.had a lawful lover

B.was an illegal writer

C.used to be a lawyer

D.was a competent doctor

听力原文: As a writer, I seem to spend most of the time working in my office at home, sitting alone in front of the computer. In fact, the only people I see regularly are the members of my family, when they get home from work or school. Otherwise, I don' t have much chance to meet face-to-face with people. And I'm sorry that I haven't kept in touch with the friends I made in college. I often get letters from the readers though, and I try to get out of the house at least once a day. From time to time, I give lectures in public libraries or teach courses at colleges in North America. But if I ever run out of ideas or I start suffering from loneliness, I'll give up writing books. Then maybe I'll start a new job where I work with lots of people, and I can have a conversation whenever I feel like one.

Where does the speaker work most of the time?

A.In libraries.

B.At a college.

C.At her home.
